POCKET-BOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,294, dated March 10, 1903.

Application filed May 26, 1902.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that L'HENRY J. GAISMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is the production of a pocket-book, purse, or the like which shall be durable in the working parts and comparatively cheap to manufacture.

In carrying out my invention I provide a main body portion or blank of suitable material, at opposite sides of which are extensions or Webs made integral therewith to be folded toward the main body and a folding frame secured to the edges of said extensions or webs, gussets or gores being also secured to said frame, whereby a pocket or compartment is formed.

The invention also contemplates novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein- Fignre 1 is a perspective view of apocketbook embodying my invention shown opened out and part of the frame broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the blank from which the pocket-book may be made, showing certain strips attached thereto; and Fig. 3 is a plan or face View of a gusset or gore to be connected with the frame.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 indicates a blank for the body portion of the pocket-book, which may be of suitable material, such as leather. At opposite sides the blank 1 has extensions or webs 1 which are to be folded toward the blank, as on the lines 1", and after said extensions or webs are so folded the portion 1 of the blank, as well as the extensions or webs, are to be folded toward the main body, as indicated by the line at 1 such fold forming the bottom of the pocket. The extensions or webs 1 near their outer edges are folded, as along the lines 1 to be gripped by aframe. The extensions or webs 1 when folded, as described, at each end of the pocket are respectively connected with a Serial No. 108,952. (No model.)

As a convenient and appropriate means for securing the extensions or Webs 1 and the gussets 2 together I provide a folding frame 3 of suitable or well-known construction, in the appropriate channels of which are clamped the contiguous bent or folded portions 1 and 2 of the extensions 1 and gussets 2, respectively, when brought together, as indicated in Fig. 1. When the parts are constructed as described, the extensions l and gussets 2 form bellows-like ends for the pocket or compartment thatis formed between the folded portion 1 and the main body of blank 1.

To increase the number of pockets I provide a strip or piece of suitable material 4 of approximately the width of blank 1 and secure said strip at about its mid-portion, as along the line 1, as by stitches or otherwise, to the blank 1 before the parts are folded, and then the extensions 1 are folded inwardly upon said strip. The Walls 4 4" of the strip or piece 1' extend outwardly in the main compartment between the portion 1 and the main body, and the outer edges of the Walls 4: 4 are secured in the appropriate channels of frame 3, for which purpose the edges 4 of the strip 4 may be extended, as in Fig. 2, the edges 4 not being clamped by the frame and extending along the outer edges of the extension 1. Thus the frame 3 being secured to the extensions 1, the gussets 2, and the walls 4 4 the parts forming the pocket are united in a firm structure, and as the extensions or webs 1 are integral with the main body portion the durability of the structure is increased and the whole strengthened over the well-known pocket-books in which the body portion and the gussets are all in separate pieces, secured together at the extreme edges of the pockets.

Such pocket may be provided with a flap 8, secured to the main body, as indicated in Fig. 2, and provided with suitable fastening devices, as at 9. It will be understood, however, that the pocket 7 may be otherwise formed, if desired.

The pocket-book above described will be found durable and efficient in use and simple to manufacture, and the various parts may be altered in shape and arrangement to produce the same results without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Instead of the strip 4 having two walls 49 4 it may have a single wall, or several strips may be used to provide a plurality of pockets.

Having now described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A pocket-book or like article comprising a body portion having integral extensions or webs at the sides, part of the body portion being folded upon itself and said extensions or webs being folded inwardly, and a frame attached to the inner edges of said projections or webs, substantially as described.

2. A pocket-book or like article comprising a body portion having integral extensions or webs at the sides, part of the body portion and said extensions or webs being folded, a frame attached to said projections or Webs, and gussets or gores secured to said frame between the folded extensions or webs, substantially as described.

3. A pocket-book or like article comprising a body portion having integral extensions or webs at the sides, part of the body portion being folded, said extensions or webs being folded inwardly toward the body and the edges of said extensions or webs folded outwardly, gussets or gores having edges adjacent to the last-named edges of the extensions or webs, and a frame secured to said edges of said extensions or webs and to said gussets or gores, substantially as described.

4. A pocket-book or like article comprising a body portion having integral extensions or webs at the sides, aframe secured to said extensions or webs, and a strip located within the compartment formed by the body portion providing a plurality of pockets,substantially as described.

5. A pocket-book or like article comprising a body portion having integral extensions or webs at the sides, part of the body portion being folded forming a compartment or pocket, a pair of walls located in said compartment, and a frame secured to the edges of said extensions or webs and to the outer edges of said walls, substantially as described.

6. A pocket-book or like article comprising a body portion having integral extensions or webs at the sides, part of the body portion being folded forming a compartment or pocket, a pair of walls located in said compartment, a frame secured to the edges of said extensions or webs and to the outer edges of said walls, and gussets or gores located between the respective extensions or webs and secured to said frame, substantially as described.

7. A pocket-book or like article comprising a body portion having integral extensions or webs at the sides, the body portion being folded forming a compartment or pocket, said extensions or webs being folded inwardly between the folded portions of the body portion, and the edges of said projections or wings being folded, and a frame secured to the lastnamed folded portions of said extensions or webs, substantially as described.

8. A pocket-book or like article comprising i a body portion having integral extensions or webs at the sides, part of the body portion being folded and said extensions or webs being folded inwardly between the folded portion of the body forming a compartment or pocket, the inner edges of said extensions or webs being folded outwardly, gussets or gores having their edges extended outwardly adjacent to the folded edges of the extensions or webs, and a frame secured to the folded edges of said extensions or webs and to said gussets or gores, substantially as described.

9. A pocket-book or like article comprising a body portion having integral extensions or Webs at the sides, part of the body portion being folded forming a compartment or pocket, said extensions or webs being folded inwardly, a strip or piece of material folded between its ends and located in said compartment or pocket and having its folded portion at the bottom of the latter, gussets or gores located between the extensions or webs, and a frame secured to said extensions or webs and tothe corresponding gussets and also secured to the outer edges of said strip or piece of material whereby a plurality of pockets is formed, substantially as described.
