IMPROVED STARE-HOLDER IN GARS.

TO ALL lvl-IOM IT MAY CNCERN: i
Be it known that I, R. PARMELE, et' Aurora, in the-county of Kane, and State ot' Illinois', have invented i an Improved Stake-Holder, for Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following .is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters marked thereon, making a part of this description, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective representation of my invention.
Figure 2, an end elevation of the same. Y
The nature of my invention consists in the use ot' a'cast-iron socket, having the usual openings at the end and .bottom for holding the stake, and made reversible, so as ,to fit either side ofthe car, and witli right-angular slots in the. sides, in which the lower pin is made to operate, and also with 'notches in the edges of the sides,
arranged so as to allow the upper stake-pin to pass over a curve or cam, and hold the stake either in a vertical f or'horizoutal position, as the case may require.
The reversible socket I do not consider new, neither the holes in it for supporting the end of the stake; but the right-angularlslots in the sides, and their cam and notched edges, are new, together with the upper and lower pins, which hold the stake in place, and have not been employed heretofore for such a purpose, and, when arranged as hereinafter shown, provide a better fastening for the stake than any similar means now in use.
A The necessity for a devicewhich will hold a stake upright when a cnr has a load, and arranged to be turned Adown when leading the car, is readily comprehended; and many ineicctual attempts have been made, by the' wayot' inventions, to accomplish this desirable result, one of which consists of e socket having a stationary pin and a slotted stake; but, as the `slot weakened the stake, and the leverage was so short, the arrangement proved, in a great measure, inoperative.
In order to give a correct understanding of my invention, Ihave marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and willnow give a. detailed description. y
C represents the side of the car, to which the stake-holder is attached by means ot` a clamp put around it and in the greove`J in the usual manner, or by any other means most desirable. '.lheI socket is castin a single piece, of suitable size and strength, and with an opening through the bottom M, and through the end N, of suitable size to correspond'with the end of the stake A, and has right-angular slots, I, made in both' sides, for the purpose of supporting a pin', F, put through stake A, and allow the latter to have an upright'or horizontal position. Theedges ot' the sides DA have notches, Il L, between which are the curved projections K K, over which the upper stake-pin E is made to pass when being' changed from notch L to notch H, as when the stake is putin a horizontal position, ns seen by red lines B, iig. 1'.
` It will be seen, from this description, that the stake A, when upright, has three supports, one at ghe bottom by means of the usual mortis@ or opening, and two by means of pins F E, slot. I, and notch L or H, as the ease may be, thus 4holding the stake more lirnily than any means now used.
I I Having thus fully described my invention, what lI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The socket or stakeholder, constructed with the right-angular slots I and notches L H, in combination with the pins E F, in the lower end of the stake, substantially as and for the purpose described.
v O. R. PARMELE.
