UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER RALPH HERRING, OF EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND.
GAS-RETORT DISCHARGING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION torming part Of Letters Patent No. 721,952, dated March 3, 1903.
Application filed October 6, 1902 Serial No. 126.110. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER RALPH HER- RING, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Granton House, in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Discharging Inclined Gas-Retorts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus for use in connection with inclinedgas-retort installations, more particularly in connection with the discharging of such retorts.
The objects of the said apparatus are, first, to facilitate the removal of the coal-stop from the mouthpiece of the retort and the setting of same in such a position as to be ready for reinsertion as soon as the coke is withdrawn from the retort; secondly, to receive the coke immediately upon the removal of the mouthpiece-stop and to direct it into, first, the cokeconveyer, second, the basement floor, or, third, the producer charging door; and, thirdly, to provide a tar-screen for preventing the tar and coke dropping from the mouthpiece above upon the doors and levers of the mouthpiece immediately beneath.
My improved apparatus consists of a movable carriage mounted on suitable wheels and guided by a single rail or pair of rails in front of the lower mouthpieces of the retorts or overhead, this carriage being propelled either by hand or by means of any simple mechanical traversing gear fitted thereon. Upon the carriage is erected or suspended a body forming a chute, having hinged flaps fitted therein for the purpose of directing the cokeeither into the coke-conveyor trough immediately beneath the same or through the opening in the floor communicating with the basement or the producer-charging door. The upper front portion of the chute-body projects forward on a line immediately beneath the lipsof the cast-iron mouthpieces of the retorts in order to intercept the tar and liquid sometimes issuing therefrom when the doors are at first opened. Upon the upper part of the body is suspended or otherwise attached a rail for carrying the hand-tools used for opening the mouthpiece-door and for removing and suspending the coal-stop.
The apparatus to accomplish the purposes mentioned is preferably constructed separately for each horizontal row of retorts to be manipulated, although, if desired, the same may be combined in one apparatus.
My said invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved apparatus as arranged for the upper tier of retorts. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, on a somewhat onlarged scale, of apparatus as arranged for the middle tier of retorts. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of Fig. 3.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for use in connection with the upper tier of retorts the carriage or. is mounted on wheels I), so as to be movable along a line of rails in front of the lower tier of retorts. Upon the said carriage or is erected a body forming a double chute, in the upper part of which is fitted ahinged flap c,carried on the shaftd and operated by means of rod 6 and lever f, whereby the coke is directed at will either into the cokeconveyer trough immediately beneath the vertical part 9 of the chute or (by reversing the position of the said hinged flap 0) into the inclined chute h, which discharges through an opening in the floor communicating with the basement or the producercharging door. In the lower part of the vertical chute g is fitted a swing-box 2', carried on a horizontal shaftj and adjusted by means of lever k, quadrant Z, and lock-nut m and having a central partition n, which extends to a point above the said shaft j. Thus by inclining the swing-box 'i to either side the coke may be discharged into the conveyortrough in either a forward or a backward direction, as may be necessary. To permit this movement of the swing-box 2', the sides of the chute g are provided with flap-doors hinged at p. The tar-screen is formed by the projecting lip q, which catches and drains away any tar or liquid that may issue from the mouthpiece of the retort on the door being opened. The rail 1", suspended from arched supports 3 8 above the body of the chute, is provided for carrying the hook t and the handtools used for opening the mouthpiece-door and removing and suspending the coal-stop.
In the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and at for use in connection with the middle tier of retorts a shorter body, comprising vertical chute g and inclined chute h, is mounted on a carriage a, having wheels b, as before described. The hinged flap 0, arranged and operated as before described, is also provided, whereby the coke is directed at will either vertically into the coke-conveyer trough immediately beneath the chute g or (by revers' ing the flap 0) into the inclined chute h, communicating with the basement and the producer. Upon the upper part of the body are provided the tar-screen q and the rail 1', carried by arched supports 3 s, as before described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An apparatus for use in discharginginclined gas-retorts, and comprising a carriage a mounted on wheels I), a body erected or suspended thereon having vertical chute g and inclined chute h, a flap a hinged upon a shaft 01 within said body so as to control the inlet to said chutes g, It, means for operating said flap 0, a swing-b02111 carried upon a shaft j within said chute g and having extended central partition n whereby the direction of discharge from the vertical chute 9 may be regulated, means for adjusting the position of said swing-box i, a tar-screen q, and a rail 1' carried by supports 8 s, substantially as described herein, for the purposes specified.
2. An apparatus for use in discharging inclined gas-retorts, and comprising a carriage a mounted on wheels I), a body erected or suspended thereon having vertical chute g and inclined chute h, a flap c hinged upon a shaft d within said body so as to control the inlet to said chutes g, h, means for operating said flap c, a tar-screen q, and a rail 1" carried by supports 8 s, substantially as described herein, for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER RALPH HERRING.
