SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,866, dated March 3, 1903.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER C. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lafayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Insect-Trap, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to traps for destroying winged insects, and has for its objects to produce a device of this character which will be simple of construction, efficient in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, wholly protect the lamp, and admit of the ready removal of the destroyed insects.

To these ends the invention comprises in an insect-trap the combination, with a lamp, of a relatively fixed base-section adapted to surround the lamp-body, a removable upper section adapted to surround the chimney, and means whereby the base-section supports the upper section.

The invention further consists of the details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional elevation of the device, illustrating the lamp in position therein. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the base-section.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates an ordinary lamp of any suitable or desired construction, having a chimney 2, to the top of which I apply a metallic cap 3, of wire-gauze or the like, pointed or rounded on top to prevent the lodgment of the disabled insects.

4 is the lower section or base of my improved trap, preferably composed of sheet metal and in the form of the frustum of a cone inverted. This section of the trap surrounds the lamp-body and is provided with horizontal lugs 5 for attaching it to the top of a post or other suitable foundation.

6 is the upper section of the trap, which surrounds the lamp-chimney and is also preferably composed of sheet metal and in the form of a truncated cone closed at its top by a gauze cap 7 and an overhanging weather shield or cowl 8 and provided at its base with a comparatively wide flange 9. The upper section is provided with downwardly-projecting spring-arms 10, adapted to seat within the lower section 4, and thus firmly and removably support the upper section in a vertical position. The downwardly and inwardly sloping sides of the base-section permit of the height of the upper section being readily adjusted by simply forcing the spring-arms 10 a greater or less distance into the basesection.

It is obvious that by this construction the parts may be readily adjusted or the top. section removed to permit the removal of the dead insects from the lower section.

In operation, the parts occupying the position as in Fig. 1, the insects attracted by the light will enter beneath the flange 9, which also serves as a weather-shield, and pass up wardly into the upper section of the trap. In endeavoring to make their escape they will fly to the top of the trap, closed by the gauze cap 7, and in so doing will come within the influence of the heat radiated from the lamp, which will be of sufficient intensity to destroy them. The dead insects in falling out of the trap will be prevented from entering the lamp-chimney owing to the cap 3 and from lodgment upon the latter due to its shape.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In an insect-trap, the combination with a lamp having a chimney, of a relatively fixed base-section adapted to surround the lampbody, a removable upper section adapted to surround the chimney and to be adjusted toward and from the base-section, and means whereby the base-section supports the upper section, substantially as described.

2. In an insect-trap, the combination with a lamp,of a relatively fixed base-section adapted to surround the body of the lamp, a removable upper section adapted to surround the chimney and spring-arms carried by one of said sections and adapted to be removably inserted into the other section,whereby the upper section will be removably and adj ustably supported by the base-section, substantially as described.

3. In an insect-trap,the combination with a lamp, of abase-section adapted to surround the same, means carried by the base for attaching it to a suitable foundation, an'upper section adapted to surround the chimney, and spring-arms carried by the upper section and stroyed by the heat radiated from the lamp and will be prevented from dropping into the lamp-chimney, substantially as described.
