UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD D. MACKINTOSH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO S. S. IIEPWORTH COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A
CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
C-ENTRIFUGAL MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,714, dated March 3, 1903. Application filed September 6 1902. Serial No. 122,305. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. MACKIN- TOSH,of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Centrifugal Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an electrically-driven hanging centrifugal from which the motor parts can be removed for examination or repairs without taking down the body of the machine.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification and showing a vertical section of my improved centrifugal machine, 1 is the spindle carrying the basket 2 and removably secured to the armature 3 of an electric motor.
4 is a head supporting the magnet and other non-rotating parts of the electric motor on its upper face and rigidly connected to the outer casing 5 of the centrifugal byrods 6.
7 is a bearing for the lower end of the spindle and is also the support of the latter and all its attached parts. This bearing 7 is connected to the casing 5 by any suitable number of rods 8, but preferably by three. 9 is a second bearing located between the basket 2 and the armature 3. This bearing 9 is made with an exterior ball-shaped enlargement,
upon which rests the head 4 and which fits the supporting-surface of a socket in a stationary support 10. The armature and the magnet are held concentric with each other and swing or gyrate together in the same relative position. shaped enlargement is permitted in the socket to enable the basket and other parts below the bearing 9 to swing to a suitable extent in any direction in the manner required of hanging centrifugals, While the armature and the other parts above the said bearing swing simultaneously in an opposite direction, rotation of the head 4 and its attached parts being prevented by a horn 11, forming part of the head and extending through a hole in the stationary support 10.
Such being the construction of myimproved centrifugal, it will be noted that the motor parts can be removed upwardly without taking down or moving the body of the machine.
Sufficient motion of the balltially as described.
2. In a centrifugal machine, a basket and an electric motor both swingable from a point between the two, substantially as described.
3. In a centrifugal machine, a basket and an electric motor held in fixed relation, each to the other, and swingable simultaneously in opposite directions, substantially as described.
4. In a centrifugal machine, a basket and an electric motor held in fixed relation, each to the other, and swingable about a point between the two, substantially as described.
5. In a centrifugal machine, a basket and the armature of an electriomotor, both fixed to the same spindle and upheld by a stationary support located between the two, substantially as described.
' 6. In a centrifugal machine, a stationary support upholding the spindle and its attached parts, the armature of an electric motor attached to the spindle above the stationary support, and a basket attached to the spindle below the stationary support, substantially as described.
7. In a centrifugal machine hanging from a support above the basket, a head located above the basket and the magnet of an electric motor located above the head and supported thereby, substantially as described.
8. In a centrifugal machine hanging from a support above the basket, a swingable casing and the magnet of an electric motor rigidly connected thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
