UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN L. OHAMBEBLIN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
COMBINED SlGiNAL AND TRUMPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,151, dated February 24, 1903.
Application filed September 16, 1898. Serial No. 691,096. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN'L. CHAMBER- LIN, a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Signal and Trumpet; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as ,will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in combined speaking-trumpets and signals, the object of the invention being to so construct an apparatus of this character as to control the volume of sound vertically and distribute it horizontally.
A further object is to provide an apparatus of the class specified which can be applied to a street-car and which shall be simple in construction and effectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the application of I my invention to a car. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line w m of Fig. l.
A represents the platform of a car, and B the dashboard. A trumpet 1 is secured under the platform and projects forwardly of the same. The trumpet is preferably made of sheet metal and provided with fiat top and bottom faces 2 3 and rounded or curved edges or sides 4, as shown. The trumpet thus has a general flat appearance, having a width much greater than its length. With such construction it will be seen that sound-waves will be scattered over a large area horizontally, and hence reach persons some distance from the car, and owing to the vertical contraction of the trumpet waste of sound-waves over the heads of persons for whom they are intended will be avoided.
A bell or gong 5 is disposed in the trumpet 1 and is operated by striking mechanism 6. I employ a speaking-tube 7, which communicates with the interior of the trumpet in advance of the gong and midway between the.
top and bottom faces 2 3 of the trumpet, so as to be in line with the longitudinal axis of the latter. The tube is provided with a mouthpiece 8 in convenient position for the motorman or operator. It will be seen that with my improved construction of alarm for cars and the like if a person is on the track and the motorman or operator sounds the gong or bell the sound will be thrown directly forward and will not be lost in the noise and confusion of the street. The motorman or operator can also call through the trumpet if the bell or gong is not heeded.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a trumpet, a bell within the trumpet, a hammer for the bell, a flexibletube communicating with the trumpet in advance of the bell and a mouthpiece at the free end of said tube.
2. The combination with a flattened tapering hollow body, a bell therein, a hammer for the bell mounted in the smaller end of said hollow body, means for operating said hammer, a tube entering said hollow body and terminating beyond said bell, the other end of said tube being free and a mouthpiece at the free end of the tube.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANKLIN L. CHAMBERLIN.
