Description

@uitrit tutes @stent @ffice RUDOLPH SCI-IRADER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No; 72,089, dated .December 10, 1867. Y
IMPROVED DOOR-SPRING.
I @te ,Stimuli referti): tu in these tetteta atent :mt mating part nf It stmt.
TO ALIi WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH ScnnADnR, of' Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented n new and improved Door-Spring; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in thewart to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a spring for doors, that, being properly connected with the door, will operate to close it, whether, when opened, it swings inside or outside, through the casing to the door, the spring being especially applicahleto doors hung to swing through their casing, or inside and outside. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved door-spring is illustrated- Figure 1 being a view of the inside of the casing or box for the spring, showing it as inserted or hung therein, and
Figure 2 a transverse section, taken in the plane of the line a: 11:, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. I
A, in the drawings, represents the casing or box for the spring, which box is made of a circular and cylindrical shape, and closed at each end by head-plates B, one of which is provided with a flange, C, for securing it to a. door-frame, by the use of screws, or other suitable fastening devices. D, a spring, coiled within the casing A. The inner end of this spring is secured to `the outer section or sleeve E, placed upon and over a hollow socket, F, made with a square-shaped hole through its centre; this socket turning at one end in ahole ofthe head-plate B, through which it projects, with the` sleeve similarly hung at its other end, in the opposite head-plate B. G, a hook, secured to outer end of spring, which hook enga-ges with the projection H on inside of casing. The sleeve E is provided with a radial arm, I, resting or bearing against the opposite side of the casing-projection H to that of the hook G; und J, a radial arm of socket F, which arm J, at its outer end, is embraced between the radial arm I to the sleeve and the hook G attached to the spring, as plainly shown in lig. 1 of the drawings. A
By the square-shaped hole of the centre socket, the door is connected with the spring by a suitable arm or connection-bar, while the swinging open of the door produces a tighter coiling or winding up of the spring,
whether such door swings in or out, the sleeve acting in the one casehand the arm, through the hook, secured'- to the sprig in the other case; the projection, on inside of casing forming a. stop to the reaction of the spring upon the arm and hook.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The door-spring, constructed as described, consisting of the hollow socket F, placed over'the square shank of the 'door-arm, and provided with the right-angular arm J, sleeve E, to which the inner end of the coiled spring D is securcly fastened, fitting at or alternating upon the socket F, and provided with the right-angulararm I, resting against the post H, in the case A, the free end of the spring resting against the opposite side of said post, all operating as describedfor the purpose specified. 4 i
2. The spring D, operated by means of the right-angular arm J of the hollow shank F, engaging with the outer end G ofthe spring, when the door moves in one direction, and when moving in the oppositedirection engaging with ,the arm I of the sleeve E, to which the inner end of the spring is secured, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
3. The combination and arrangement within the case A, of the spring D, hollow socket F, having arm J, sleeve E, havingnrm I, po'st II, and hook G, operating as described for the purpose specified.
RUDOLPH SCHRAD'ER.
