Description

No. 720,429. PATENTED FEB. 10, 1903.
- A. 1., HINES.
SNAP HOOK.
APPLIUATION FILED SEPT. 30 1902 no MODEL.
Dvitvmsses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT L. I-IINES, OF BURTON, OHIO.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 720,429, dated February 10, 1903.
Application filed September 30, 1902. Serial ITO-125,452. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. HINEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burton, in the county of, Geauga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Snap-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to harness snap-hooks, and has for its object to provide a device of the character described in which the pivoted tongue is operated by pressure exerted on two levers neither one of which will alone operate it, and thus effectively dispense with the danger of the tongue swinging out of engagement with the end of the hook and releasing it from'engagement with the harness.
The advantages of my invention will more fully appear hereinafter and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view in elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 3, a top plan view, and Fig. 4 a bottom plan view.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, A represents the hook portionof my invention, having at its rear end a loop-B, to be attached to a strap.
0 represents a casing between the hook A and loop B, in which is pivoted the tongue D. The tongue is Y-shaped, having its lower arm d formed with a notch d to receive the end of lever E to hold the tongue in a locked position, while the upper arm 01'' is relatively longer and thinner to form a bearing for the end of lever F to swing said tongue in opening the hook. The free ends of levers E and F are formed with circular buttons Grand H, respectively, for receiving the thumb and finger of the operators hand, and I represents an expansible coil-spring to normally separate buttons G and H, and thus hold the end of lever E in engagement with notch cl and lever F from engagement with arm d.
It will readily be understood from the above description and by inspection of the draw ings that the snap-hook may be opened by pressing on the buttons G and H simultaneously, thus swinging lever E from engagement with notch d and causing the end of lever F to bear against arm (1, thus throwing it out and causing the free end of tongue D to swing toward the interior of the hook A. When the pressure on buttons G and H is relieved, coil-spring I causes levers E and F to separate, and the end of lever F bearing against arm cl swings tongue D into a locking position against the end of hook A, while the end of lever E engages slot cl and holds tongue D in its locked position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A harness snap-hook comprisingacasing having a hook at one end and a loop at the other, a Y-shaped tongue pivoted in said casing, a lever having one end bearing between the forked arms of said tongue, a lever having one end adapted to rest in a notch in one of said arms, and an expansible coil-spring bearing between the free ends of said levers, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a harness snap-hook,a pivoted tongue, a lever to swing said tongue into and out of engagement with the end of the hook, and a second lever to normally look said tongue when in engagement with said hook, said levers being soarranged that they will not separately operate said tongue but must be actuated jointly .to swing the tongue, substan-- tially as shown and described.
3. In a harness snap-hook,a pivoted tongue, a lever to swing said tongue into and out of engagement with the end of the hook, a second lever to normally look said tongue when in engagement with said hook, and an expansible coil-spring bearing between the free ends of said levers, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a harness snap-hook, a pivoted Y shaped tongue, a lever having one end bearing between the forked arms of said tongue, a'lever having one end adapted to rest in a notch in one of said arms, and an expansible coil-spring bearing between the free ends of said levers, substa'ntially as shown and described. i I
In testimony whereof 1 hereto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT L. HINES.
