Be it known that I, LEWIS GOULDING, of Mediield, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented -an Improved Implement for Seouring or Cleaning Knives, Src.; and do hereby declare Vthe following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, in Which.-

The end sought in making this invention is to lessen the disagreeable labor of scouringknives or forks, as by its employment this may be accomplishedV in less time, and with the expenditure of` much' less strength, than by the old mode.

The invention consists in applying to a rectangular board or shallow box, a bar or lever, provided with a rubbing or scouring-pad, and a projecting handle for ease in operating it, substantially as hereinafter explained.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, A denotes a rectangular board or tablet, having an enclosing ledge, a, to confine and prevent escape of dirt or the polishing-material used in scouring. A small enclosure or sunken space, b, is formed inV one'corner of the board, for receiving the scouring-powder or peste, and there may also be an inclined bed, c, applied lto the surface of the board, and between its outer edge and the enclosure b, for supporting the knifeor other utensil to be cleaned. To the extreme opposite end of the board A, a bar, B, is pivoted at one end, as shown at d in the drawings, the said bar extending over and across the surface of the board, and having formed upon its outer end a handle, e, which projects beyond the board a suicient distance to enable it to be readily grasped by a persons hand. A longitudinal slot, j', is made through the bar B, and over the bed c before referred to, the object of this slot being to receive the scouring-'pad orl rubber g, which in this instance is composed of a number oi' pieces .of leather of equal size, placed side by side, and inserted within the slot, and secured in place'b'y clamp-screws z' screwed through one side of the bar and against such pad. If considered preferable, the screwsmay pass entirely through the pad, and into the oppo site side of the bar.Y The pad may be made of cork, wood, or any suitable material. The mode of pivoting the bar B to the board A, should be such as to allow the necessary backward and forward movements of it over the knife, and at the same time all on it to be raised suieiently high to receive between it and the bed c, a knife, placed on edge in order to scour its back.

Previous to using the above-described implement, it is to be securely clamped to the upper surface of a table',

or to any other suitable place.

In operating with it, the knife is to be seized by its handle with the left hand, and its blade laid iiatwiseV upon the bed c. The handle of the bar B is ne'xtto be grasped inthe right hand, and its pad or rubber dipped into the enclosure Z1, which has previously been supplied with the scouring-material or paste, a portion of which will adhere to it. The bar B is now -to be moved over upon the knife, and with the pad in Contact with the blade, and moved brislcly back and forth thereon, until such blade is suiiciently scoured, the pad bein-g dipped from time to time within the scouring-material, as occasion may require. A fork may be scoured with my invention, with the same facility as a knife. As the scouringfpad becomes worn, its coniining-screws may be loosened, which allows it to be lowered to the desired extent, and the screws subsequently tightened.

The advantages resultingfrom the use of the implement, made as above explained, are first,as a leverage (varying in power with the length of the handle) is exerted upon the rubber or scouring-pad, themanual exertion required is very much reduced, this `being in addition to the ease with which the handle may be retained within the hand, in comparison to the old niode of holding a cork between the thumb and inger; second, therback of the knife and edges of the tintes of a fork, as well as the bolsters of both, may readily be scoured by means of my invention, the inability to accomplish which has been urged as an objection to most if not all machines new m use.

The implement is compact in form, and combines or contains within itself all the requisites for perform ing the desired result. The bar-B with its pad may be used separately from the rest of the device, and applied to an ordinary table or bench, for the purpose of polishing metals or other substances.

1. I claim the combination, in an implement for'scouring knives, o'f the bar B with its adjustable pad g, arranged for operation as Iand for the purposes herein shown and described.

2. I claim, in combination with the board or tablet Atthe bar B provided with the scouring-pad g, and pivoted to S11-ch board, and operating with its upper surface, or upon an inclined bed formed thereon, essentially as herein set forth and explained.

3. I claim the combination, with the bnr B and its pad, of the knife-bed 'and the enclosure for holding and receiving the scouring-material, orranged relatively to each other` and to the bar B as herein shown and set forth.
