DANIEL ANDREW BELL STODDART, OF EMERSON, CANADA.
REVOLVING BOOKCAVS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 720,190, dated February 10, 1903.
' Application led June 2, 1902. Serial No. 109.894. (No model.)
To LZZ whom it Wawy concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL ANDREW .BELL STODDART, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Emerson, county of Manchester, Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revoluble Bookcases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in revolving bookcases;v and the object that I have in view is the provision of a simple and inexpensive construction capable of large holding capacity and having its parts arranged to distribute the weight from the center and over the entire area of the base, thus contributing to the stability of the structure.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the course of the subjoined description, and the novelty in the construction and arrangement of parts will be defined by the claim. p
In the drawings hereto annexed, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a revolving bookcasev constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional elevation thereof. Y
The same numerals of reference denote like parts in both figures of the drawings.
5 designates the platform, which is preferably circular in shape and consists of the Weighted rim 6, the step-block 7, and a series of spokes 8. All these parts areflrmly and solidly united together, so as to produce a substantial and heavy base arranged to cover quite a floor area; but the detailed construction of the base may be modified. The stepyblock is provided in its upper face with a bearing-cavity 9, and the rim of the platform is furnished with suitable brackets 10 at proper intervals, said brackets having the Wheels or rolls 11 mounted therein.
The revolving case comprises a base 12, a plurality of case-sections 13, a central post or column 14, and suitable connecting devices, whereby all the parts are joined solidly together and produce a structure adapted to be mounted revolubly upon the base. The central post or column may be made of Wood or other appropriate material, and when made of Wood its loWer end is reinforced by a footplate 15. A metallic spindle 16 is secured in the lower extremity of the post and extended through the foot plate, said spindle being seated in the bearing-cavity 9 of the stepblock, whereby the post is centered and revolubly mounted upon the step-block of the platform. Any desired number of case-sections 13 are grouped in proper or appropriate order aroundthe post or column 14, and these sections are seated upon the base 12, said casesectons being suitably united together and to the base. 'The upper portions of the case-sec tions are united by the coupling-band 17, the same being fastened individually to the tops of the case-sections by any suitable kind of fastening, as the staples 18, and this couplingring has aplurality of bars 19 fastened thereto and to the'upper extremity of the post or column 14. This coupling-ring having the described connections with the case-sections and with the column tends to strengthen the upper portion of the bookcase and to prevent the parts from spreading.
The base 12 ispreferably in the form of a ring having a series of spokes 12, Which are fastened to the post, although the form of the base may be varied in the event that it isdesired to make the revolving case present a hexagonal or octagonal appearance. The radial spokes have the inclined braces 2O fastened thereto, the upper ends of said braces being attached to the post or column.
The base 12 of the revolving bookcase rests upon the rolls or wheels 11, so that a part of the Weight of the bookcase and its load is imposed directly upon the roller-bearings at the .rim of the platform; but the base 12 has connection through the braces 2O with the central post, thus imposing some of the Weight upon the center of the case and upon the step-block 7 at the center of the-platform, whereby the strength of the structure is promoted, and it is mounted on the platform in a way to make the bookcase Work easily and steadily.
Some of the case-sections 13 may be provided with hinged doors, as indicated at 21. Other of the case-sections may have open shelving, (indicated at 22,) while the spaces between the case-sections may be filled in by IOO sire to be limited to the precise form of all the parts as shown, reserving the right to vary therefrom.
I claim- A revolving bookcase com prising a platform having the central bearing-block and a series of Wheel-bearings near the rim thereof, a revoluble base idly fitted upon said wheel-bearin gs, a central post stepped upon the bearingblock, a series of oase-sections monn ted upon the base and grouped around the post, a coupling-ring fastened to the case-sections and connected to said post, and braces fastened to the base and to the post, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
DANIEL ANDREW BELL STODDAR'I.
