SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,785, dated February 3, 1903.

This invention relates to the class of table knives havinga plu rality of blades removable from the handle; and the object of the present invention is in the main to provide a means ofsecuring the set of blades in the handle so that they may be conveniently and readily detached and removed therefrom.

In the accompanying drawings,whioh serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the knife. 7 Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section substantially at line 00 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the set or cluster of blades. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the socket end of the handle. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the hinged locking latch or dog detached, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the locking slide-ring detached.

In the drawings, 1 is the handle, and 2 designates the several blades of the set or clus for. As here shown, there are five blades; but the particular number is not important to my invention. It will be noted by inspection of Figs. 2 and 4 that the blades are thickened at their heels or butts, as seen at 3, and that on the two outer blades this thickening is on the inner face. The middle blade may have the thickening divided, part being on each face or side. The blades have each at its heel a tang 4, Figs. 3 and 5, provided with a shoulder 5. The set of tan'gs 4 enter a socket 6 on the handle 1. One side of this socket is open, and hinged in the opening is a locking latch or dog 7. (Seen detached in Fig. 7.) This view shows the hinging lugs or journals 8 of the latch. On its inner face the said latch has a jaw 9, which when the tan gs of the blades are set in the socket takes over the shoulders 5 on thetangs to hold the blades in place. This is seen in Fig. 3, which also shows the upper end of the latch as taking under shoulders 10 on the heels of the blades where the tangs connect therewith.

To hold the latch or dog 7 in place, there is a locking slide-ring 11.

(Seen detached in Fig. 8.) This ring embraces slidably the socket 6, and when the blades are placed and the latch placed so that the jaw 9 takes over,

the shoulders on the tangs the ring 11 is pushed upward and, bearing on a beveled cam-piece 12 on the latch, presses the latter in firmly, and thus secures the blades in the handle.

It will be noted by inspection of Fig. 3 that the jaw 9 on the latch enters a recess in the tangs of the blades and that the upper or free end of the latch takes over projecting parts of the tangs, all of which serves to hold the blades rigidly in the socket. The campiece 12 also provides a hold for the fingernail to permit the latch 7 to be pulled out, as in Fig. 6, when the ring 11 is slipped down.

It may be explained that the object of the knife is to enable the user to out food into bitsor strips conveniently at one operation and that the present invention belongs to the same class as the knife shown in my United States Patent N 0. 708,806, dated September Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A knife with a plurality of blades, comprising a handle having a socket at its end, a locking-latch hinged in said socket, and a sliding locking-ring embracing said socket, in combination with a plurality of blades arranged abreast and provided each with a heel and a shoulder-tang to fit in said socket, the said locking-latch having a jaw to engage the shoulders on the said tangs and hold the blades firmly in place.

The combination with a knife-handle having a socket 6, the locking-latch 7, hinged in said socket and having a jaw 9 on its inner face, and the slide-ring 11 on the socket, of the blades 2, disposed abreast and each provided with a tang 4: having a shoulder 5 to be engaged by the jaw 011 the latch 7 for holding the blades in place, substantially as set forth.
