Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
M. PERL, on NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANAP IMPROVED MEDICAL COMPOUND.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. PERL, of the city of Vienna, in the Empire of Austria, but now residing in New Orleans, Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Medical Oompound, which 1 designate or distinguish by the name of Peruvian-Bark Bitters, for the cure of dyspepsia, indigestion, liver-complaint, jaundice, chronic or nervous debility, chronic diarrhea, intermittent fever and ague, diseases of the kidneys, all diseases arising from a disordered liver, stomach, or intestines, and all kinds of periodical disorders; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of my method or process of compounding the same.
I put into thirty-six pounds of rain-water, acidulated with two ounces of pure sulphuric acid, three pounds of powdered red cinchonabark and three pounds of willow-bark, powdered, and macerate for forty-eight hours. The liquid is then drained off, and the process of maceration upon the powders is again repeated three several times, each time for twentyfour hours, and in the same quantity of acidulated rain-water. The four liquids are now poured into the same or one retort, and evaporated down to ten pounds weight. The

Radix zingiber, two and a half ounces; Pomum aumntiormn, two and a half ounces,- Oardw mon minores, two ounces; Carisph'ili, one and,
a half ounce, and. ten pounds of the best Madeira wine, and one and a half pound of white sugar. At the expiration of fourteen days the liquid is strained 0E, and, that which remains in the residuum being secured by filtration and pressure, the tincture is bottled and is ready for use.
