FENTON B. TURCK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MASSAGING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 718,958, dated January 20, 1903. Application filed February 24, 1902. Serial No. 95,266. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom Timmy concern:
Be it known that LFENTON B. TURCK,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Massaging Apparatus, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in hydro-electric massage apparatus, and more particularly to that class of apparatus in which is employed a massaging glove or mitten equipped with a douche; and my primary object is to provide means whereby one form of douche may be readily substituted for another.
In the accompanying drawings myinvention is illustrated in connection with apparatus of the character described and claimed in my pending application, Serial No. 71,794, filed August l2, 1901.
In the drawings, Figure lis adiagram matic view illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, a broken sectional view taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3, an enlarged broken section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. l, and Figs. 4 and 5, views showing modified forms of douches.
A represents a metallic foot-plate or bodycontact; B, a massaging glove or mitten which may be worn by either a bather or an attendant; C, a iiexible water-bag suspended by the transverse support a between levers or boards C', which are pivotally connected at their upper ends and spring-connected at their lower ends, the bag C being provided with an inlet-tube a; D, a fiexible tube communicating with a douche b, with `which the glove B is equipped, said douche having forwardly downwardlydirected perforations h; D', a flexible tube connecting the tube D with the bag C; D2, a flexible wire-receiving conduit with which the tube D is provided; D3, an insulated electric conductor passing through said conduit D2 and terminating in an uninsulated portion c, located Within said douche b; D4, an insulated wire connecting a battery D5 with the insulated wire D5, and D6 an insulated wire connecting the battery D5 with the foot-plate or body-contact A.
The douche b is provided with the reduced end portions b2 and b4, and the glove B is provided with a socket b3 to receive the reduced end portion b2 and with an elastic band or strip b5 to embrace. the portion b4. The tube D is provided at its end with a nipple or union d, which lits into the open end of any of the removable and interchangeable douches.
In the modification of Fig. 4 the douche is provided with a single opening h6, enabling a singlejet douche (known as the French douche) to be administered, and in the modiiication of Fig. 5 the douche is provided with a single slit bl, enabling the so-called fantail douche to be administered.
To equip the massaging glove or mitten with one of the removable douches, the douche is inserted through the elastic band h5 until the end h2 passes into the socket b3 and the elastic band h5 embraces the reduced end b4. The union of the tube D and the douche by means of the nipple may be made either before or after the douche is applied to the glove.
While the use of the improved device Will be understood readily by reference to the above-mentioned application, it may here be stated that the electric circuit is completed through the jet or jets of water applied to the body, so that currents of water and electricity are simultaneously administered. The different effects attributable to the different water douches are well understood by those who are skilled in this kind of treatment, and the effect of what may be termed the electric douche is to enhance the beneficial effects of the water douche and minimize the possibility of harmful effects therefrom.
Changes in details of construction within the spirit of my invention may be made. Hence no undue limitation is to be understood from the foregoing detailed description.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of a massaging-mitten, a douche removably connected therewith, and 'a flexible tube communicating with said douche.
2. The combination of a massaging-mitten, equipped with douche connections, a removable douche secured by said connections, and a flexible tube communicating with vsaid douche.
