CLOTH -ROLL SHAFT FOR LOOll/IS.
SEEGZMIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,949, dated January 20, 1903.
Application filed March 24, 190?. Serial No. 99,582. (No model.)
1.0 aZZ whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, ROLAND R. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Villiamstown Station, county of Berkshire, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cloth-Roll Shafts for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of novel, simple, and efficient means for preventing longitudinal movement of the cloth upon the cloth-roll shaft in a loom as the cloth is wound thereupon by the operation of the take-up mechanism.
In order to obtain smoothly-wound even rolls of cloth with parallel flat ends, various devices have been employed, said devices usually acting as guides for the edges of the cloth as it passes around the shaft. I have in my present invention provided the cloth roll shaft itself with means for engaging and preventing longitudinal movement of the cloth upon the shaft while being wound, the said means being readily rendered inoperative when it is desired to withdraw the shaft from the completed roll of cloth. In accordance with my invention several of the layers or windings immediately adjacent the shaft are firmly held from longitudinal movement, constituting a true and even core, as it were, on which the succeeding layers are readily wound.
The various novel features of my invention will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional View of a portion of a loom, taken at the inner side of one of the stands for the clothroll shaft, the latter being shown in section with one embodiment of my invention applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation and part section of the cloth-roll shaft, the cloth-holding means thereon, and the roll of cloth wound upon said shaft.
Referring to Fig. 1, the loom frame A, breast-beam B, take-up roll T, stands F, (only one being shown,) longitudinally slotted at f for the rack-bars g which at their upper ends support the journals g of the cloth-roll shaft G, and the rack-gears g in mesh with the rack-bars, may be and are all substantially as in United States Patent No.610,636, dated September 13, 1898.
As shown in Fig. 2, the cloth-roll shaft G has a longitudinal recess or groove 9 therein extending from near one end of the shaft to substantially its center, and a slightly-bent elongated arm g is fulcrumed in the recess on a transverse pivot-pin The inner end of the arm is turned out or provided with a substantially radial holding device, shown as a prong g which is normally maintained extended beyond the surface of the shaft by a suitable spring, as 3 The outer end of the arm is shown as bent oppositely to the prong to form a finger-piece g", which extends through a hole 9 in the shaft and which intersects the recess 9 In order to limit the outward movement of the prong g the bottom of the recess is shown as slightly beveled at g Fig. 2, to support the outer end of the arm 9 near the finger-piece. When the web 25 of cloth passes around the take-up roll T and thence to the cloth-roll shaft G, the holding device g enters the cloth and prevents it from moving longitudinally on the shaft, and the length of the prong is sufficient to penetrate a number of superposed layers of the cloth immediately adjacent the shaft, as shown in the drawings. This serves to anchor or hold the cloth firmly while the inner portion or core is being laid upon the shaft, so that there can be no longitudinal movement of the roll 0 of cloth during the winding thereof. When in the rotation of the shaft G the prong bears against the surface of the take-up roll, the spring 3 yields temporarily, so that the smoothness of the winding is not interrupted. After the desired length of cloth has been wound and cut off from the web the roll of cloth and its shaft G are removed, and when it is desired to withdraw the shaft from the rollC the attendant presses on the finger-piece 9 thereby tilting the arm g on its fulcrum, compressing the spring 5 and the prong or holding device 9 is retracted into the recess g and withdrawn from the cloth, so that the shaft can be pulled out of the roll 0 and replaced in the loom.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Alongitudinally-recessed cloth-roll shaft for looms, a radiallymovable, spring-controlled prong mounted thereon to engage and prevent longitudinal movement of the cloth as it is wound upon the shaft, and means pivotally mounted in the recess to retract said prong against the action of its spring to re lease the roll of cloth andpermit withdrawal of the shaft, said means having a finger-piece accessible at one end of the shaft, whereby the said means may be manually operated.
2. A cloth-roll shaft for looms having a lon ROLAND R. KELLY.
