WAGON.

LEWIS K. DAVIS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO GRACE P. DAVIS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,921, dated January 20, 1903.
Application filed May 19, 1902. Serial No. 108,092. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, LEWIS K. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagons, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in wagons, but more particularly to improvements in wagons for the transportation of finely-granulated material, such as fine coal or coke, coal-dust, and the like.
The object of my invention is to enable such material as coal-dust to be transported from point to point and readily delivered to a hopper or furnace without substantial loss of material.
It is extremely difficult to transport and deliver coal-dust, for instance, Without considerable loss, and my invention affords a. ready and simple apparatus whereby great saving may be accomplished.
Further objects of my invention will hereinafter appear in this specification.
To these ends my invention consists in the apparatus embodied in a wagon having substantially the general construction and mode of operation as fully described and shown in this specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure lis an end elevation of a wagon embodying myinvention; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section.
Referring to the drawings, the wheels 9 are connected in any suitable and usual manner to awagon-body 1, preferably of substantially the shape shown in Fig. 1, although any suitable shape may be used. According to my invention the wagon-body 1 is inclosed on all sides, but provided with means for access to the interior thereof. (Shown as a top 10, suitably connected to the wagon-bod y, as by hinges 1]..) The body 1 may be built in any suitable manner to form an inclosed receptacle to prevent loss of the finely-divided ma terial in transportation.
WVhere coal-dust is conveyed from a wagon to the delivery-hopper in the open, great loss of material occurs. According to my invention this loss is largely prevented. To the wagon-body 1 is connected a hollow head 4.,
provided with a delivery-opening 5, while a conveyor (shown in this instance as ascrew conveyor 2) extends through the head 4 along the bottom of the body 1. The conveyor is preferably arranged longitudinally of the wagon-body, and means are provided for actuating said conveyor, (shown as a crank 3,) whereby granular material will be conveyed from the wagon-body and discharged from the head 4.
If the material in the wagon is to be delivered to a hopper 7, which may be provided with a conveyer 8, it is preferable to provide a flexible sleeve or sack 6 between the head 4 and hopper 7 to prevent loss of coal-dust or othersuch light and finely-divided material.
Means should be provided for preventing loss of material through the delivery-opening 5, and as shown in this instance the head 1 is connected to the body 1 in such manner that it may be rotated about a longitudinal axis to the position shown in dotted lines.
Without limiting myself to the construction shown and described, I claim 1. In a wagon for the transportation of finely-granulated material such as fine coal or coke, coal-dust and the like, the combination of a Wagon-body tightly inclosed on all sides with means for obtaining direct access to the interior thereof from the top, and a conveyor extending longitudinally along the bottom of said wagon and arranged to deliver the material from the wagon, substantially as described.
2. A wagon comprising a body inclosed on all sides and having a top cover adapted to be opened and closed, a conveyer extending longitudinally along the bottom of the body, and means for operating the said conveyor whereby the material contained in the wagonbody may be delivered therefrom, substan' tially as described.
3. A wagon comprising an inclosed body with means for obtaining access to the interior thereof, a hollow head connected to said body and provided with a delivery-aperture, a screw conveyor extending longitudinally through said head and along the bottom of the body, and means for actuating said conveyor, substantially as described.
4:. A wagon for the transportation of finelygranulated material, such as fine coal, coke, coal-dust and the like, said wagon comprising an entirely-inclosed Wagonbody,a hollow head connected thereto provided with a deliveryopening, means for preventing loss of material through said opening in transportation,
a screw conveyer extending longitudinally through said head and along the bottom of the wagon, and means for actuating said 0011- veyer, substantially as described. 10
Signed this 29th day of March, 1902, at Indianapolis.
