Beit known that I, ARTHUR H. BAUGHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scoops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to scoops; and the Object is to provide an improved construction of scoop which can be used as a road-scraper or utilized for the purpose of depositing material into a wagon, car, or other receptacle provided for the purpose.

The invention consists in certain novel parts and combinations of parts to be referred to hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a scoop constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the scoop, showing the locking-handle in engagement therewith. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the handle and its lock.

The reference-numeral 1 designates an approximately U-shaped plate, having an upwardly-projecting flange 2 extending entirely around its outer edge. Arranged on the rear of the Iiange and extending forwardly for a l portion of the length of the side arms of the plate is a fence 3, which comprises horizontally-arranged wires supported with relation to the flange by brace-bars 4. The arms of the U-shaped plate are connected together intermediate their ends by a transversely-arranged brace 5, to which is secured a plurality of parallel longitudinally-extending teeth 6, which are al'sorfastened at their rear/extremities to the plate 1. On either side of the iange 2 are hooks 7, which are designed to engage the eyes 8 of the clevis 9, to which a draft device may be secured to draw the scoop over the ground when it is used as a road-scraper. When, however, it is desired to use the scoop for conveying material into a suitable receptacle, the clevis will be swung on a vertical plane and attached to a hoisting apparatus of any preferred construction.

Ou the rear of the scoop and carried by the flange 2 are parallel ears or bearings 10, which constitute journals for the shaft 11,

running transversely of the scoop and in rear of the iange 2. This shaft 11 supports an approximately U-shaped handle 12, the parallel side bars 13 and 14 of which lhave depending ends 15 at approximately right angies tothe arms and terminate in eyes 16, which embrace the shaft 11, whereby a hinge connection is formed, so that the handle is Apivotally secured to the scoop. On one or bothof the side arms of the handle isa locking device, which comprises a pivoted lever 17, on one end of which is a depending arm- 18, designed to engage the inner side of the flange of the scoop and form one jaw of a clamping device,the depending extensions 15 of the arms forming the other jaw. The end of the lever 17, which is on the opposite side of the fulcrum to that on which is the clamping-arm, is curved on an arc, and this end of the lever, together with the arm to which it is secured, is embraced by a ring, which can be slid longitudinally of the lever and the arm by a reciprocating rod 19, which extends through a rigid eye or ring 20, formed on the rear and which forms a guide, so that by grasping the handle 21 on the end of the rod it can be reciprocated, thus moving the ring toward or away from the depending extensions 15, so as to clamp or release the rear portion of the scoop. Owing to the peculiar curvature in the lever 17 the arm 18 will be forced into clamping engagement with the liange by moving the ring toward the forward end of one of the arms 13 or 14:. By pulling upon the handle 21, however, the ring will be slid rearwardly upon the curved extension of the lever 17 and force the arm or jaw 18 upward and out of engagement with the liange, whereby the handle will be free to swing upon the shaft 11.

I have described specifically what to me appears to be the preferred form of this invention; but I am aware that changes or alterations may be made without materially affecting the efficiencyor departing from the spirit thereof. For instance, the scoop can be molded, cast, orV formed of a single piece, if desired, and the clevis and handle attached thereto in substantially the same manner as shown in Fig. 1. In actual practice I nd IOO that a single locking device upon one of the arlns will be sufficient to hold the handle rigid with relation to the scoop; but, if necessary, both of the side arms 13 and 14: can be supplied with these locking-arms. However, I have deemed it necessary to only show one locking device, as the other would be an exact duplicate of the one illustrated and described.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a combined scoop and road-scraper, the combination with a hinged handle secured to the rear of the scoop, of a lever pivoted to the handle and having a clamping-jaw thereon designed to engage the inner surface of the rear end of the scoop, a curved extension on the opposite end of the lever, and a reciprocating ring encircling the handle and lever and adapted to be operated so that the jaw will engage or release the scoop.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a scoop having an upwardly-extending ange at its rear end, of a hinged handle carried by the scoop, a pivoted clamping-lever on the handle having a curved end, and an encircling ring fitting around the handle and curved end of the lever, and

means for actuating the ring whereby the le- 1 ver will be caused to engage or disengage the scoop to lock or unlock the handle in relation therewith.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a scoop having a hinged handle, of a pivotally-arranged curved locking-lever carried by the handle, and means for engaging the curved end of the lockinglever whereby it will be caused to engage or disengage the scoop.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a scoop, comprising an approximately U-shaped plate having an upwardly-curved flange, a fence tted to the ange and extending above the same, a hinged handle carried by the scoop, a pivoted locking-lever secured to the handle and provided with a rearwardly-curved end, and a reciprocating actuating device in engagement with the curved end for actuating the lever so as to cause itto engage or disengage the ange of the scoop.
