SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,800, dated d'anuary 20, 1903.

To all whom, t may concern.-
Beit known that I, PHILIP H. SHUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ouray, in the county of Ouray and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansible Pulleys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make a-nd use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to expansible pulleys, and particularly to that class thereof in which the expansion of the rim-segments is produced by the use of a disk having a spiral groove.
The object of my invention is to generally improve such pulleys by a construction permitting expansion or contraction of the pulley without stopping its rotation and irrespective of its velocity.V
A further object is to provide expansion mechanism suitable for a split pulley, inasmuch as it is not known to me that a split pulley has ever been provided with an expansion device. This is very desirable, as the use of split pulleys is advantageous and common.
A further object is to construct an eXpansion-pulley which will remain at adjustment without strain on the adjusting mechanism until such mechanism is actuated voluntarily.
A further object is to construct a slow-action adjusting device so that it may be used on high-speed shafting.
Afurther object is to provide adjusting devices Which will be automatically operated by the revolution of the pulley to expand or contract the same irrespective of the direction of rotation.
A further object is to provide automatic stops for the adjusting device, so as to not wreck the same by too great expansion or contraction. This is desirable, since the eXpansion mechanism is driven by the rotation of an elevation showing the manner of assem- 6o bling the grooved disks. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section showing the stop for the adjustment.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the main shaft is indicated at 6. ience in assembling and attaching to the shaft the pulley-frame is formed of two side sections 7, each of which is halved or split. The halves are joined in the usual manner, as by bolts 8. and iiange 7b, which respectively abut, except where the anges are cut away to permit the passage of the stems 9 of the segments 9. The sections are held together by bolts 7c and have radial slots 7d, in whichslide 75 lugs 9b on the segments to guide the radial movement thereof.
The adjusting-disks lO are mounted in easy contact with and revoluble on the hub between lthe side sections of the pulley. The 8o disks have faced complementary spiral grooves 10a, which receive lugs 9c, formed on the inner ends of the segment-stems. As shown in Fig. 3, each disk is split or halved,
and in assembling the joints are broken by a quarter-turn and the parts joined by screws 10', forming a continuous groove in each disk. These fit loosely over the hub of the pulley and are connected by gearing with the disks. The rings and gearing are duplicated on opposite sides of the pulley to turn the disks in opposite direction and produce contraction or expansion, as desired,irrespective of the direction of rotation of the pulley. It will be seen that the tangential strain ou the pulley is borne by the side sections or frame and the radial strain by the disks,which are made heavy for that purpose. These disks rest on the hub, and there is therefore no tendency to get out of adjustment, and the adjusting gearing normally bears no strain.
A stop for the adjusting device is formed by a lever 17, which is pivoted on the side of the pulley, as at 17, and has a beveled head 17", which is adapted to be thrown in behind and against the adjusting-ring, when it has the eiect of forcing the ring out of mesh with the worm-wheel. The lever is operated by rods 17C, which are connected to the lug 9b of one of the segments and pass loosely through Openings in the tail of the lever. The rods take the movement of the segment, and the collars are so set that when the limit ot' expansion or contraction is reached one of them strikes the lever and throws its beveled head against the ring, forcing the latter out of mesh. It is to be understood that there is one of these stops on each side of the pulley for each ring.

Vhat I claim is- 1. 'lhe combination with a pulley-frame and rim-segments guided radially thereon, of adjusting-disks having a spiral groove and engaging the segments.
2. The combination with a pulley-frame having radial guide-slots, of rim-segments having lugs iu said slots, and spirally-grooved adjusting and supporting disks for the seglnents.
3. 'lhe combination with a pulley-frame and rim-segments guided radially thereon, of spirally-grooved adj listing-disks for the segments revoluble relative to the frame.
4. The combination with a pulley-frame and ri m-segments guided radially thereon, of spirally-grooved adjusting-disks for the segments revolubly supported on the hub of the frame.
5. The combination with a pulley-frame comprising two detachable side sections, and radially-movable rim-segments between the same, of spirally-grooved revoluble disks between the sections adjustably supporting the segments.
6. The combination with a pulley-frame comprising two side sections detachably joined, and radially-guided rim-segments between the same, ot' spirally-grooved adjusting-disks for the segments revoluble on the hub between the sections.
7. The combination with a pulley-frame comprising two side sections detachably joined, and radially-guided rim-segments between the same, of twojoined disks revoluble between the sections, having faced complementary spiral grooves in which projections on the segments are supported.
8. The combination with a pulley-frame, radially guided rim segments thereon, and revoluble spirally-grooved adjusting-disks for the segments, of means to revolve the disks, and means actuated bythe movement of the segments to stop the disks.
9. In an expansible pulley, in combination, a pulley-frame, having radially-movable rimsegments, gears to move the segments, and means actuated by the movement of the segments to automatically diseugage said gears and stop the movement.
10. In an expansible pulley, the combination with a pulley-frame having radially-movable rim-segment-s and means to move the same, of an automatic stop for the said means connected to one of the segments.
11. In an expansion-pulley, in combination, a pulley-frame, radially-guided rim-segments thereon, spirally-slotted disks revoluble relative to the frame and engaging the segments, gears to revolve the disks, and levers` connected to the segments and actuated thereby to diseugage the gears at the limit of expansion or contraction.
12. In an expansion-pulley, in combination, a pulley-frame, spirally-grooved revoluble adjusting disks, radially movable rimsegments guided by the frame and engaging the disks, Worm wheels and gears to revolve the disks, and shifting rings having a Wormthread engageable with the wheels.
13. The combination with a pulley-frame having radially-movable rim-segments, of oppositely-operating expansion devices on each side of the frame, automatically actuated by the revolution of the pulley, whereby the segments may be expanded or contracted irrespective of the direction of revolution.
