SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,551, dated January 13, 1903.

Be it known that 1, JOHN WILLIAM WAIN- WRIGHT, engineer, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Kyngstone, Park road, Hale, inthe county of Chester, England, have invented a certain new Improvement in Trucks for Tram-Cars or other Rolling-Stock, (for which I have made application for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 17,689, September 4., 1901,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trucks for tramcars and other rolling-stock; and it consists in a construction and design of truck which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 shows my construction of truck in side elevation. Fig.2 shows the samein plan. Fig. 3 shows the same in end elevation.
On each side of the truck is a beam Ct, forming the upper'member of the truck. It extends without a break the wholelength of the truck. Connected to and extending downwardly from this beam are two pairs of hornplates Z) I). Extending between the adjacent horn-plates I) Z), one of each pair on each side of the truck, is a member a, whichis secured to the lower end of the horn-plates. Extending from the lower end of each horn-plate b b to each end of the beam at is a member 01. At an intermediate point in each member 61 is secured a block 6, and to this is attached the center portionof a laminated spring f. The ends of these laminated springs act to support plungers g g, which pass through holes cut for them in a flange h, which is formed integral with or secured to the beam Ct. The upper ends of these plungers are secured to the top chord is, which is rigidly secured to the car-body. This top chord also has secured to it plnngers m m, which pass downward through holes'cut for them in the flange h and carry secured to them washers or collars n and o. The plungers m on the outsides of the horn-plates are provided with both these washers; but the plungers between the horn-plates are provided only with the upper washers "n. Washers p are carried by or supported from the beam Ct. Between the washers n and the washers p are coil-springs q, and between the washers p and the washers o are placed coil-springs r. Washers p are also carried by the beam at at its extreme ends, and plungers m, attached to the body of the car, are provided with washers n and 0'. Coil-springs q and r are placed between the washers p and n and between the washers n and 0, respectively. An axle-box s is placed between each pair of horn-plates, and over each axle-box is placed an equalizingbar 15, the ends of which carry rods u 11., which rods have fixed to them washers u 1), between which and washers w w, fixed to the hornplates, are placed springs on 00. Between the ends of each pair of horn-plates is a block or distance-piece y, and between this and the axle-box is a coil-spring 2. Attached to the top chord near each end is a plunger 2, which passes through a hole cut for it in the flange h. Beams 3 extend across the truck and connect the beam at at one side with the beam a at the other side. These beams have parallel central portions and divergent ends, the
parallel central portions being connected together by the plate 4. Brackets 5 are secured to the beams, and through holes in these brackets pass rods 6. The upper ends of these rods are connected to bars 7, which are adapted to support electric motors. The lower ends of the rods 6 carry washers 8. Between thewashers 8 and the brackets 5 are placed coil-springs 9, and between the brackets 5 and the bars 7 are placed coil-springs 10.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a truck for tram-cars, a beam extending longitudinally of the truck on each side and having a horizontal top flange, hornplates extending downwardly therefrom for the axle-boxes, rods connecting thelower ends of the inner horn-plates together, inclined rods connecting the lower ends of the outer horn-plates with the ends of the beam, top chords, plungers connected at their upper ends to said top chords and each carrying a pair of collars, washers carried by the frame of the truck and one situated between each pair of collars and coil-springs between the said collars and said washers, substantially IOO top flange, hornplates extending downwardly from said beams for the axle-boxes, rods connecting the inner horn-plates to each other, inclined rods connecting the outer horn-plates with the ends of said beams, leaf-springs having their central portions connected to said inclined rods, top chords, plungers connected thereto and passing downwardly through openings in the flanges of the beams, and having their lower ends connected to said leafsprings, additional plungers connected to said chords and passing downwardly through openings in said flanges, helical springs encircling said plnngers, and abutments for the ends of said helical springs and carried respectively by the plunger-s and beams, substantially as described.
3. In a car-truck, a beam extending longitudinally on each side and havinga horizontal top flange, horn-plates extending downwardly from said beams for the axle-boxes, rods extending from the lower ends of the inner hornplates to each other, inclined rods connecting the lower ends of the outer horn-plates with the ends of said beams, leaf-springs having their central portions connected to the said inclined rods intermediate between the ends of the rods, top chords, plungers connected at their upper ends to said top chords, and each carrying a pair of collars, washers carried by the frame of the truck and one situated between each pair of collars and coilsprings between the said collars and said washers, substantially as described.
4. In a car-truck, the longitudinal side beams, the cross-bars having diverging or inclined ends bolted to said side beams, brackets carried by said inclined portions, vertical rods under spring tension guided in said brackets and cross-bars 7 for carrying motors having their ends connected to said vertical rods, substantially as described.
5. In trucks for tram-cars and other rollingstock, the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as described and illustrated, comprising on each side of the truck an upper beam a provided with a flange h and extending without a break the whole length of the truck, horn-plates b, I) attached to and extending downward from said beam at, a top chord 70, a lower member 0 connecting the lower extremities of the two inside horn-plates b I), end members 61 connecting the lower extremities of the outside hornplates 1), b with the ends of the beam a, laminated springsf supported from said members d, coil-springs q, r, q, r, plungers 2 carried by said top chord and passing through holes in said flange h, axle-boxes s, equalizing-bars t resting on said. axle-boxes, rods u, u hung from the ends of said equalizing-bars, washers v, v fixed on said rods, washers w, w fixed to said horn-plates, coil-springs w, a: placed between said washers o and said washers w, distance-pieces y placed between the lower extremities of the members of each pair of horn-plates, coil-springs 2 between said distance-pieces and said axle-boxes; and between the beams a, cross-beams 3 having parallel connected central portions and divergent ends secured to said beams a, motorsuspension bars 7 hung from said cross-beams 3 and coil-springs 9 and 10.
