H. H. VAUGHAN. THROTTLE VALVE. APPLICATION TILED MAR. 19, 1901.
no MODEL.
HENRY 1 1. VAUGHAN, OF CHICAGO, mun-01s, H I p JOHNSON TOOL COMPANY, A CORPORATION on 1 nno1s.;
I a citizen of the United States,
TH ROTTLE-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 7113,556, dat
To (LU whom it may concern:
Be itknowu that I; HENRY H. VAUGHAN,
residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook, State of Illinois, have "invented certain new and useful Improvements in Throttle-Valves; and I hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exactjdescription of thesame, reference being ha'd tothe accompanying drawings,where- Figure l is an end elevation, and Fig. 2 an axial section, of a throttle-valve embodying my invention. I
Like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur. I i
My invention relates to the construction of throttle-valves in general, but has been especially devised for use with'pneumatic or mo but in the throttle-valve,
tivefluid operated tools-as, for instance, pneumatic drills-where a eompact-trigger or quick-opening valve is desired. The objections existing to this'clas's of throttle-valves as heretofore constructed have been due in some instances to the arrangement and move mentzof the valve at right angles tothe center line of the motive-fluid-induction pipe, which'necessitated the use of stuffing-boxes to obtain tight joints and resulted in obstruc-.- tions which inconvenienced the workman and limitedthe utility of the devices, while in other instances where an axial arrangement of the valve has been attempted the air-passages have been so obstructed as to materially interrupt and retard the free and'effective flow of the motive fluid.
The object of the present invention is not only to avoid objectionable obstruction on to materially simplify the construction of this class of'valves,
. the motive fluid in and and insure a free and unobstructed fiowof through the valveand pp y-pip To this end the main feature of my invention resides'in the combination, with a tubular outer shell or casing having an axiallysupp'orted stem-guide, of an included perforated tubular chamber into which the axiallysupported stem-guide projects and a pistonvalve within said tubular valve-chamber and the othereud, as at 1*, for connection withithe 6t pipe leading to themachine or'tool to be op' eratedf. a v f Adjacent to the delivery end'of the c'asin ,l'said casing is indebted or provided with a"- lever-pocket 2 for the reception of the short? 0 arm of an elbow-lever I pivoted o'nathe'cas; ing, as-atm, the long arm of which'l'eveiyeic,r tends parallelor substantially parallel with the casing l and is utilizedto operatethe throttle-valvei Projecting axially within said 7 5. casing 1, supported from and communicating stem-guide with iever-pocket 2, is a tubular 3, within which is movably arranged a stem 4, one end of which extends into the. lever-- 'pocket 2, in contact with the lever-arm there- 80 in, and the other end of which extends into an axially-arranged valve-shell orvalvechamber and is in contact witha pistonvalve longitudinally movable in said valvechamber.
which may. have an area practically equal to 90 about half the area of the containing casing or pipe 1. I This valve-chamber is closed at one end, the other or open end being screw-' threaded to engage fthescrew-threads l on that end of the casing or shell 1, and thus be 95 detachably supported longitudinally within the casing 1 and around the centrally-located stem-guide 3. I
arranged to be actuated by the anially-sup- The valve-chamber 5 is provided with a so: ries of perforations or parts rig-which are 1 ecl danuaryla, 3 ApplicationfiledMaroh-IQ, 1901. BerialRo.l51,828- (mums-rv ported stem, whereby a plurality'ofi t5nn trio and communicating annulau'chagmbersj are formed within the valve and practically.
closed by means of a. longitudinally-movable piston valve 6, said piston-valve being perforated longitudinally, as indicated in dotted line, Fig. 2, to balance the same and being normally supported by a spring 7 in 'such position as to close the ports but may be moved longitudinally of its case by the-stem 4' when actuated by the lever L to unclose the gorge 5 and permit the flow of the motive in The construction being substantially such as hereinbefore pointed out, the operation of the devices will be as follows: The long arm of the lever L being depressed, its short arm will impart an endwise movement to the stem 4 within the stem-guide 3, which acting axially on the piston-valve 6 will cause it to move longitudinally in the valve-shell 5, thus compressing the spring 7 and uncovering the ports 5', which allows the free and unobatructed flow of the motive fluid through the annularchamber surrounding the axially-pm sitioned stem-guide 3, out of ports 5 into and through the annular chamber surrounding the valve-chamber, and thence to the point of its utilization.
. Among the advantages of my invention are var-pocket which extends into said shell and having a stem-guide connected with said leverpocket, of a valve-chamber arranged longitudinally within said shell and inclosing said stem-guide, va stem, and a piston-valve. I
ported from the lever-pocket, of a tubular perthe purposes specified.
3. In a throttle-valve, the combination with a casing having a lever-pocket and a stemguide arranged axially of the casing and sup- 6o forated valve-chamberdetachably supported within the casing and which incloses the stemguide, a stem, a piston-valve within the valvechamber, and a lever for actuating the stem,
substantially as and for the purposes speci- 4. In a throttle-valve, the combination with a tubular casing having an axiallysupported stem-guide, of a tubular valve-chamber arranged longitudinally within the tubular cas- 7o ing and inclosing the axially-placed stemguide whereby concentric and communicating annular chambers are formed within the i valve, a suitable piston-valve within the tubular valve-chamber, a stem movable endwise in the stem-guide, and means for actuating said stern and piston-valve, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of March, 1901.
HENRY H. VAUGHAN.
