N0 MODEL UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. GREEN, OF ST. Louis MISSOURI.
- DUST-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,452, dated January 13, 1903.
Application filed February 24, 1902. Serial No. 95,475. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs GREEN, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Guards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to automatically-adjustable dust-guards; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown," described, and claimed.
My object is to construct an improved dustguard for car-axles which will be automatically adjustable and which may be quickly repaired or renewed without removing the axle from the oil-box and bearing, and my invention consists of a dust-guard compr.is--
ing a lower half, an upper half, which is a duplicate of said lower half and joined to the lower half by a half-lap or ship-lap joint, springs to press the lower half upwardly against the axle, springs to press the upper half downwardly against the axle, both halves or sections being reversible and interchangeable, and a removable bearing for the upper ends of said springs.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the oil-box and bearing shown in elevation and the dust-guard being shown in cross-section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section, partly in elevation, through the axle and box and showing the dust-guard. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the box, showing the dust-guard in position, part of the box being broken away.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved automatically-adjustable dust-guard comprises the lower half t, the duplicate and interchangeable upper half 5, there being a half-lap or ship-lap joint 6 at the meeting edges of said half 4 with the said half 5 at the horizontal center of the axle 7, the springs 8 to press the lower half 4 upwardly against the axle, the springs 9 to press the upper half downwardly againstthe axle, and the removable bearing-block 10 for the upper ends of said springs 9. The oil box or bearing 11 has a rectangular recess 12 at its inner end, said recessbeing crosswise of the axle and adapted to receive the dust-guard. The lower end of the recess 12 is closed by the wall 13, which forms a seat for the lower end of the springs 8. The dust-guard is motion.
preferably made of wood, and the lower edge of the lower half 4 is laminated by inserting the cross-piece 14, the grain of the said crosspiece running crosswise of the grain of said lower half 4, so as to stiffen and strengthen the part and prevent its warping and splitting. The upper edge of the upper half 5 is laminated by inserting the cross-piece 15. The springs S are expansive coil-springs, and the upper ends are straightened to a vertical position and driven into the cross-piece 14, thus adjusting the springs to the dust-guard so that the springs are removed with the dust-guard. The springs'9 are likewise adjusted to the cross-piece 15 in the upper half 5. The bearing-block 10 is made of wood and is driven into the upper end of the recess 12 The springs 8 and 9 will hold the two halves of the dust-guard closely against the axle,
and as the bearing wears the parts will be moved toward each other to take up the lost The principal wear will be on the upper half-5, and when this pieceis worn out the bearing block 10 may be removed and a new half 5 inserted without removing the axle from the oil-box and bearing and a new block inserted, thus practically renewing the entire dust-guard.
The sections may be removed without removing the axle from the oil-box by first jacking up the oil-box 11 in the usual manner, which will take the weight off of the brass, and then said brass may be readily removed in the customary manner, and then the box may be lowered sufficiently to permit the lower section 4c to be readily removed at the inner end of the box, and all without removing the axle fromthe box.
I claim An improved dust guard, composed of duplicate, interchangeable and reversible sections of wood, the edges of which are reinforced by fixed cross-pieces 14,- 15, and coiled springs 8 and 9, one end of each of 1 which is straightened and driven into thesaid fixed cross-pieces, substantially as specified, In testimony whereof I aftixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
