MUSIC-ROLL FOR MECHANICAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,410, dated January 13, 1903. Application iiled April 9, 1902I Serial No. 102,002. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FRANCIS LINCOLN YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing in London, England, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Music- Rolls for Mechanical Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to .music-rolls employed in mechanical musical instruments.
The object of my invention is to construct a roll, whereby it can be adjusted to accommodate diierent widths of perforated musicsheets.
I will describe a roll embodying my invention and then point out the novel features thereof in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a mechanical musical instrument employing a take-up roll embodying my inmay be applied to what is termed a musicroll.
A designates the casing of a mechanical musical instrument of any of the well-known types-that is to say, the casing may contain mechanism for producing musical sounds or it may contain strikers with concomitant parts which actuate the strikers and cause them to operate upon a keyboard musical instrument.
B'designates a tracker, here shown as being in the form of a board having a plurality of ducts b, and C D the music-roll and take-up roll, respectively.
The music-roll O is provided with its usual trunnions, which are mounted inthe usual bearings, one of which is yielding, as shown. The music-roll C may also be provided with means which provide for a movement of the well-known music-sheet, not necessary to be shown, longitudinallyand relatively to the tracker-board. These means may be of any desired form-as, for example, those shownl and described in my application led April 9, 1902, Serial No. 102,001.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view The take-up spool D is mounted in the usual bearings, which are stationary. One bearing, however, may be yielding, in order that thev roll may be removed. The usual mechanism maybe provided for rotating the take-up roll, to wind the music-sheet upon it, and also. to rewind the music-sheet upon the music-roll.
The take-up roll D is here shown as comprising a body portion d, a cylindrical portion d', inclosing` a portion of the body d, and flanges d2 d3. The cylindrical portion d is loosely mounted upon the body portion and is adapted to be moved longitudinally of the body portion. It is provided with the usual hook d4 for engaging the eye or ring usually provided on the end of the perforated music-sheet carried by the music-roll C. As
I here shown, the hook d4 is integral with the portion d. The cylindrical portion d is also provided with a longitudinally-arranged slot d5, into which a pin d6 extends. One longitudinal edge of the slot d5 is provided with a number of recesses (i7, with which the pin d6 coacts. It will be seen that by reason of the pin d and recesses the cylindrical por- ,tionrd and consequently the hook d4, may be held in any position to'which it may be adjusted. The pin and recesses are brought into and out of engagement by slightly rotating the cylindrical portion d on the body d. The flanges d2 d3 are also adjustable along the body d. The music-spool may be similarly constructed-that is to say, it may comprise a body portion, an adjustable cylindrical portion, and an adjustable iange on each side of the cylindrical portion.
What I claim as my invention is sical instruments, comprising a body portion and an adjustable hook.

A music-roll used in mechanical musical instruments comprising a body portion, a cylindrical portion capable of movement in said body portion longitudinally thereof, means for holding the cylindrical portion in its adjusted position on the body comprising a pro-v jection carried by the body portion, and a plurality of recesses with which said projection is adapted to engage, and flanges carried by said body portion and adjustable thereon longitudinally.
