Be it known that I, FRANCIS LINcoLN YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Marking Perforated Music-Sheets with a Line Indicating an Effect to be Produced in Playing, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a device for marking perforated music-sheets used in mechanically-played instruments with a line which indicates an effect that is to be produced in the playing of the music.

The object of my invention is to provide a controller of a mechanism'comprised in such instrument with a suitable device which, during the passage of a perforated musicsheet over a tracker-board, will apply or delineate a mark or line on the music-sheet which will indicate an effect to be produced in the replaying of the musical composition. The music-sheet so marked'may be used as a stencil-sheet from which other music-sheets having cut in them the same musical composition may be marked with the same line.

I will describe a musical instrument embodying my invention and then point out the novel features thereof in the claims.

In the accompanying drawin'gs,Figure 1 represents a front elevational view of a mechanical musical instrument embodying my'invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View of a portion of a perforated music-sheet having a line marked thereon which is intended to indicate effects to be produced in playing.

A represents a portion of a mechanical musical instrument. The form of instrument here shown is a pianola, though my invention is equally applicable to other forms of mechanical musical instruments. As the form of instrument here shown is well known to those skilled in the art it will not be described in detail. A represents the tracker-board of such an instrument.

as is well known, controls the speed of the music-sheet in its passage over the trackerboard.

This arm is adapted to be connected to either of the controllers B B B or there may be'a separate arm for each or for two of the controllers. The arm is here shown as being hinged at c to the controller, and it is of such a length as to have the crayon, penoil, or other marking device approximately over the tracker-board, which toa certain extent will form a support. The marking device is held onto the perforated music-sheet by means of a springc one end of which is connected to a controller and the other to the arm 0.

versely of the music-sheet when marking a line it will also move the controller, and thereby affect the mechanism which the controller governs. The line a will be irregular, as will be seen at Fig. 3, and the irregularities are due to the difierence in efiects to be produced in playing. After the irregular line has been applied it may be straightened. The straight portions between the oblique parts mean that one effect is to be produced as long as the line is straight, and the oblique parts mean that a change in effect is to be made. It will be seen, therefore, that the operator will be enabled to accurately mark the perforated music-sheet to obtain the difierent effects indicated in the original composition.

In illustrating the invention the arm 0 is shown as being applied to the controller B which controller governs the tempo mechanism of the mechanical musical instrument.

I intend to cover generically by my claims the combinations specified by them, including, among other things, a line to indicate any and all efiects to be producedas, for

application of the expression instrumentalities, and another line to indicate speed or tempo.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-'- 1. The combination with a perforated music-sheet of means for moving said sheet, and means for marking a line thereon during the movement of said sheet to indicate effects to be produced in playing.

2. In a mechanical musicalinstrument, the combination of a perforated music sheet, means for moving said music-sheet, a marking device operated during the playing of the instrument and delineating upon the musicsheet a line corresponding to characteristics of the playing.

3. In a mechanical musical instrument, the combination of a perforated music sheet, means for moving said music-sheet, a con trolism of a mechanical musical instrument having a lever for controlling the same, a perforated music-sheet movable over the trackerboard of the mechanical instrument and a marking device carried by the lover of the tempo mechanism for applyinga tempo-line to the music-sheet as it moves over the trackerboard.

5. In combination with the tempo mechanism of a mechanical musical instrument having a lever for controlling it, a perforated music-sheet movable over the tracker-board of the musical instrument, a lever-arm carried by said lever and a marking device carried by said lever-arm for applying a tempo-line to the music-sheet as it moves over the trackerboard.

6. In combination with the tempo mechanism of a mechanical musical instrument, a music-sheet, a lever controlling said mechanism on the operation of which the speed of the tempo mechanism may be varied and consequently the speed of the music-sheet, and means carried by said lever which marks on the music-sheet the changes to be made in the speed of the music-sheet.

7. In combination with a perforated musicsheet, of means for moving said sheet and means for applyinga tempo-line thereto during the movement of the music-sheet.
