' SAMUEL H. WALLIZE, OF WASHINGTONVILLE, DEN N SYLVANIA.
Letters .Patent No. 71,825, dated December 3,1867. V
IMPROVED BRAKE FOR SLEDS.
TO ALL WHM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. WALLIZE, of Washingtonville, Monteur county, State of Pennsylvania,
have invented an Improved Brake for Sleds and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had `to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referencemarked thereon,
making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of the sled and brake.
Figure 2, a rear view.
.A represents the frame of the sled B, the runners; Cfthe front cros-s-bar, to which a. tongue may be attached;-D, the brake or dragbar, with'it's forked ends E suspended to the cross-bar C at each side, and has .a projection, G, at the lower side of the extremity of the drag-bar, which acts as a. brake, to draw along on the snow or ice, and penetrate the snow or ico a suflicient depth to regulate the forward movement of the sled, or completely check and stop it, by means of the lever H, attached to the one end of a revolving roller, J, that operates on the rear end of the cross-frame, to which roller a double lever, K, is permanently fastened, projccting down and bearing upon the drag-bar D by means of a roller, L. Below the roller L a self-adjusting double lever, M, with a lower roller, N, clasps the drag-bar D, and allows the drag-bar to operate between the double lever M and the upper and lower rollers L and N, so that, by pressing upon the lever H, the double lever K, with its roller L, presses upon the drag-bar D, and presses the brake G into the snow or'ice, and the movement oi' the sled' is regulated or checked; and by raising the lever H, the drag-bar D is raised and held up against the frame of the sled.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement of the levers H, K, and M, with their rollers L and N, when combined with the drag-bar D, and operating the brake G, as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
sAML H. WALLIZB.
