WELL-DRILLING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 718,112, dated January 18, 1903.
Application filed June 20, 1902.
To all whom it may concer-nf:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. EVERHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massillon,in the countyof Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well-DrillingMachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in Which- Figure lis a side view showing a portion of the frame and illustrating the-drill-operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a side View showing the opposite side from that illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side View of the collar and its yoke, also a portion of the yoke-shaft,said parts being designed to throw in and out the outlet-gear. Fig. V5 is an edge View of the part shown in Fig. 4.
The present invention ,has relation to Welldrilling machines; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The object of the present invention is to provide a means for imparting a reciprocating movement to the drill by means of a drilloperating rope and at the same time to change the length of the reciprocating movement Without stopping the movement of themachine proper.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 represent the end members of a frame, to Which are attached in any convenient and Well. known manner the sidebars 3 and 4 and the center bar 5, which, parts may be arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 2 or they may be dierently arranged, as the onlyobject is to providesuitable framework to connect the various parts of the machine, and the frame may be so constructed and preferably is constructed so that it can be mounted upon a Wagon to produce a portable machine.
The drawings do not show the machine mounted upon a wagon, but it will be understood that the frame is to be so formed that it may be mounted.
The power-shaft 6 is properly journaled to the side bar 4 and the center bar 5, which .11 and the toothed segment 12,.

power-shaft is provided with the power-Wheel 7. The power-shaft is also provided with the vcrank-wheel 8; but it is not necessary to provide the specific crank-Wheel herein shown, as an ordinary crank will answer the same purpose as the crank herein shown.
To the side bar 3 and the center bar 5 are attached suitable brackets 9 or their equivalents, Which brackets carry the shaft l0 and to which shaft are securely attached the links To the arms 1l is connected the cross-bar 13, upon which cross-bar are journaled the -arms 14, and to the free ends of the arms 14 the axle l5 is connected and upon Which axle .is mounted the drill-operating Wheel 16, which Wheel is grooved upon its periphery and is so formed for the purpose of receiving the drill-operating rope 17, which drill -operating rope is Wound around the drum 1S and is Vextended upward and over a suitable pulley properly connected to an ordinary derrick.
The derrick and upperpulley are not illustrated, as they form no particular part ofthe present invention, but are such as are com` monly used in well-drilling machines of this class, and hence need no description here.
In use I prefer to loosely mount the drilloperating Wheel 16 upon the axle 15, so that it can rotate upon the axle and slide thereon to follow the movement of the operating-rope as it is wound and unvvound upon the drum 18. To the crank-Wheel 8 is attached the pitman 19, which pitman is provided with the lateral arm 20, said lateral arm 20 and pitman 19 being connected to the axle 15, substantially as illustrated in the drawings, and as reciprocating movement isA imparted to the pitman a swinging movement Will be imparted to the arms 14, which in"turn imparts a vibrating or swinging movement to the axle 15 and the Wheel 16, and as the axle 15, together with the wheel 16, is moved toward the left hand in Fig. 1 and toward the right hand in Fig. 2 the drill will be elevated by the down pull of the elevating-rope 17, and as the Wheel 6 is moved in the opposite direction the elevating-rope will be released and the drill permitted to drop upon the material being drilled.
It Will be understood that when a short oscillating or swinging movement is given to the wheel 16 a short stroke will be imparted, and

a long stroke will be imparted to the drill and by increasing the drill; or in other Words a short swinging movement imparts a correspondingly short np-and-down movement to the drill, and a long swinging movement of the wheel 16 imparts a long up-and-down movement lo the drill, this feature being desirable in operating upon different kinds of material. and by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to lengthen the stroke of the drill without changing the reciprocating movement of the pitman 19. In order to accomplish this adjustment, the toothed segment 12 is provided, which toothed segment is moved by means of the worm-gear 2l, which worm-gear meshes with the tooth-segment l2 and is securelyattached to the shaft 22,which shaft is properly journaled in the bracket 23 or its equivalent at its inner end and to the bracket 24 at its outer end.
It will be understood that by changingthe position of the axle 15, together with the wheel 16, by elevating and lowering the links 1l the stroke of the drill will be adjusted as to length. It must, however, be borne in mind that when the links 1l are brought to their highest point the pitman 19 must be in a horizontal position, reference being had to the crank 26 of the crank-wheel 8 beingin a horizontal plane with the centerof the axle 6.
It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to shift the centers of the pivotal points of the links 11, which in turn adjust the throw of the wheel 16.
For the purpose of im partinga rotary movement to the drum 18 by means of the powershaft (5 the cog- wheels 27 and 28 are provided, which wheels are arranged in substantially the same manner as all drilling-machines of this class and are thrown in and out of gear with reference to the power-shaft by means of the clutch 29, which clutch is operated in the usual manner by means of the lever 30. This construction is common with all welldrilling machines and needs no specific description here.
In order to let off the operating-rope from time to time from the drum 18, the shaft 3l is provided, which shaft is provided with the pinion 32, which pinion meshes with the wheel 28. The shaft 3l is also provided with the cog-wheel 33, which cog-wheel, together with the shaft 3l and the pinion 32, is rotated by means of the worm 34 and the shaft 35, said shaft being provided with the crank-wheel 3G. It will, however, be understood that when the operating-rope 17 is to be wound upon the drum to elevate the drill the clutch 29 is to be brought into operative action, and at this time the pinion 32 is to be thrown out of gear with the cog-wheel 28. This being brought about by moving the shaft 3l endwise, the pinion 32 is moved to one side of the wheel 28. For the purpose of moving the shaft 3l endwise the operating-rod 37 is provided, which operating-rod has securely connected thereto a yoke 32, which yoke engages the grooved disk 39, which grooved disk is securely attached to the shaft 31, and when the rod 37 is moved in the direction to throw the yoke 38 outward it will carry with it the shaft 3l and bring the pinion 32 out of contact with the wheel 28, thereby allowing the drum to be rotated to properly wind the rope and elevate the drill.
Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a well-drilling machine, a suitable frame, a crank -shaft journaled thereto, a shaft located to one side of a horizontal plane through the power-shaft, said shaft provided with links, swinging arms, a cross-bar connected to the links and to the swinging arms, an axle carried by the free ends of the swinging arms, and said axle provided with a drilloperating rope-wheel, an actuating-pitman, and means for adj ust-ing the pivoted ends of the swinging arms, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a well-drilling machine, a suitable frame, a drill-rope drum journaled thereto, means for rotating the drum to wind the drillrope thereon, means to release the drill-'rope from the drum, a power-shaft provided with a crank, a drill-rope-operating wheel and axle, a pitman adapted to oscillate the axle and its rope-operating wheel, and means for adjusting the degreeof oscillation of the drillrope operating wheel independent of the throw of the pitman-operating crank, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a well-drilling machine, a suitable frame, a power-shaft provided with a crank, a pitman connected to the crank, a drill-ropeoperating wheel mounted upon an axle and the axle and Wheel actuated by the pitman, arms carrying the axle and drill-rope-operating wheel, said arms pivoted upon a crossshaft, said cross-shaft carried by links capable of movement through the arc of a circle, and means for holding the arms at a fixed point of adjustment, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a welldrilling machine, a suitable frame, a power-shaft provided with a crank, a shaft provided with a toothed segment, a worm-gear meshing with the toothed segment, means for rotating the worm-gear, links connected to the shaft provided with the toothed segment, swinging arms carrying an axle and drill-operating wheel, and the swinging arms and the links fixed to the toothed-segment shaft hinged together, and a pitman connected to the crank of the power-shaft and to the axle of the rope-operating wheel, substantially asand for the purpose specified.
