SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,016, dated January 6, 1903. Application filed If'ehruaryl i, 1901. Serial No. 47,262. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern.-
Beit known that I, DANIEL LUTHER NIoH- OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cleburne, in the county of Johnson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a baling-.press.
The object of the invention is to provide a press of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and easily operated.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is alongitndinal vertical sectional view through the press. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the baling-chamber and its removable sides, showing the manner of locking the latter to the former.
In the drawings, 1 denotes sills connected together by cross-pieces 2.
3 denotes an upright baling-chamber having feed-openings 4 and removable sides 5. When in place, the sides 5 are held in position by fastenings which consist of turn-buttons 7, which are adapted to bear upon curved blocks 8, secured to the upper ends of the removable sides. The lower ends of the removable'sides are prevented from being pressed outwardly by thehorizontal beams 9, rigidly secured to the sills. The'upper ends of the sides are provided on theirinner faces with horizontal recesses 10 to form shoulders 11, which abut against the cross-beam 12 and prevent the upper ends of said sides from being forced too far inward by the turnbuttons.
The numeral 13 designates the follower mounted in the baling-chamber, and 1a is the follower-beam, which passes through a suitable opening in the top of the baling-chamber and having its lower end secured to the follower. fThe upper end of the followerbeam has formed thereon a semicircular bearing a.

17 is a strap-hinge pivoted to the upper end of the follower-beam immediately below the bearing a thereof. The opposite end of the strap-hinge is rigidly secured to the lever, so as' to give the lever a rocking movement on said bearing end in its upward or downward course when motion is imparted thereto.
15 represents a framework located at the rear of the baling-chamber having a crosspiece 18, to which is secured-one end of a coiled spring 19, the opposite end thereof being secured to the levenforward of the straphinge connection, said spring serving to elevate the follower and beam after the contents of the baling-chamber have been compressed.
The numeral 20 indicates an independently vertically arranged fulcrum-rod having end wise movementat both of its ends to coact with the lever 16, by meansof its being loosely connected to the rear end of the lever 16 by an eye connected to said end of the lever, and by an eye formed on the upper end of the rod, the lower end of the fulcrum-rod 20 is similarly connected by an eye therewith to an eye on the rear sill of the frame, said rod being of a suflicient height to regulate the lever and give the same a free movement in its downward course during the pressing of the contents in the baling-chambers.
21 represents a stationary Windlass secu red to the forward portion of the sills, and 22 denotes an operating-rope having its upper end secured to the outer end of the lever 16, the lower end of the rope being provided with a loop 23, loosely connected to a pin 24 on the -Windlass.
I attach importance to the connections of the upper and lower ends of the fulcrum-rod 20, as it will be readily seen that when the forward end of the lever 16 is brought down by the winding of the rope 22 on.-the windlass 21 the said lever bears on the upper curved end of the plunger-rod 14:, whereby the lever 16, connected to the fulcrum-rod 20, acts to permit the plunger 13 to have full power to press the contents contained in the bailing-chamber 3.
In operation the material to be compressed is fed through the feed-openings into the baling-chamber. As it is fed into the chamber the follower is operated by hand to initially compress the material in said chamber. After enough material has been fed into the said chamber and is partially compressed by pulling with the hand upon the operatingrope the bale is completely compressed by connecting the rope to the Windlass and operating said Windlass to force the follower to its work.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention,- what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a baling-press, the combination with the baling-chamher, of a plunger, a plunger-rod secured to the plunger operating in said chamber, and a semicircular bearing on the upper end of the plunger-rod, a lever connected to the upper end of the plunger-rod, a frame provided with a cross-bar, a coiled spring, one end of said coiled spring secured to said crossbar, the other end of the spring secured to the lever, a rope having one end secured to the end of the lever and its other end secured to a stationary windingdrum, and a fulcrum-rod having eyes at opposite ends hinged to eyes on the lever and sill of the frame so as to permit of the lever having pressure on the bearing of the plunger-rod to force the plunger on the contents of the chamber when the rope is wound on said drum, substantially as specified.
