PUMP-MOUNTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,001, dated January 6, 1903.

Be it known that I, HILLES C. Jones, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Allentown, Monmouth county, New Jersey, haveinventedcertainImprovementsinPump' Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of pumps usually employed in connection with spray ing apparatus designed for general agricultural use; and it consists of certain improvements in the character of pumps used for this purpose, together with their connections and mounting, whereby I am enabled to simplify the operation and increase the effectiveness of the same.
My invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ill!- proved pump and mounting forming the subject of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line a a, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar sectional View illustrating a detail of my invention; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of Fig. 5, taken on the line b b.
The form of pump to which my invention has been applied is of a well-known single-acting type having a piston sliding freely in the cylinder, but provided with a stuffing-box that insures its movement in a straight line and prevents leakage of the liquid to be forced by said pump.
In the drawings herewith, 1 represents the cylinder, which is suitably mounted upon a base 2, which base also carries all of the operating parts of the machine. 3 represents the piston adapted to said cylinder, which piston passes through a suitable stuffing-box having a gland 4, provided with the usual bolts 5 for the purpose of setting up and holding the packing.
For the purpose of operating the pump the piston is connected to a shaft 6, suitably j ournaled at the opposite end of the frame, such connection comprising the link 7. The shaft 6 may be operated by means of a hand-lever 8 when it is desired to operate the pump to spray trees or large plants set some distance apart, or if it is desired to spray low-growing plants and vines a continuous operation is desirable, and this may be accomplished by detaching the hand-lever 8 and power then applied by means of the sprocket-wheel 9, a chain being passed from said wheel to another chain-wheel carried by the axle of the vehicle supporting the pump, the latter acting as the prime mover. At the end of the shaft 6 a face-plate 10 is secured, and the link 7 is adapted to be connected to said face-plate.
This link is attached at its opposite end at 11 to the piston-rod 3. The face-plate is preferably provided with a series of apertures 10 for the attachment of the link 7.
In order to lengthen the connection between the piston and the face-plate, the end of thepiston is slotted at 3, and the link connection extends well into this slotted portion. This construction necessitates the lengthening of the piston-rod rearwardly, and in order to provide sufficient support for said piston and maintain its reciprocation in a straight line I provide the supportingbracket 12, which is secured to the base 2 by means of suitable bolts 13, and this bracket is slotted at 14 in line with the slot in the piston-rod extension in order to permit the vertical movement of the link 7. By this means the piston andpiston-rod are firmly supported and the straight reciprocation of the same assured. At the same time the connection. between the driving-shaft and the piston is increased and the leverage extended so as to lessen the amount of power necessary to operate the pump. The hand-lever Sis connected to the shaft 6 by means of a suitable set-screw. The sprocket-Wheel, howthese parts operatively I provide a suitable clutch 15, which is splined to the shaft and which has a pin 16 controlled by a suitable spring and adapted to engage recesses in the face of said sprocket-wheel. This clutch is fastened in place against the sprocket-wheel 9 by means of a set-screw In some instances it may be desirable to ever, is loose on the shaft 6, and to connect bracket is shown at 12 slotted at 14 as noted in the other views, and this bracket is provided at its lower end with a dovetail portion 17, adapted to an opening of similar shape in the support 18, secured to the base 2, the bracket being passed through this opening before the support has been secured to the base. The ends 19 of this support are brought up in the form of yokes, as shown, and in each of these yokes an adjustable bolt 20 is provided, adapted to bear upon the edge of the bracket 12. The dovetail portion 17 of the bracket 12 fits very snugly in the basesupport 18, and by providing the set-screws, as noted, said bracket may be moved laterally to any desired extent when it is necessary to adjust or aliue the piston and pistonrod.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination in a pump, of the cylinder, an elongated piston-rod having a piston adapted to said cylinder, said rod being slotted for a portion of its length, a driving element for operating said piston-rod, a connection between said driving element and the piston-rod, said connection lying within the slotted portion of the rod, and a transversely disposed guiding support for the slotted end of the piston-rod, said support being situated between the driving element and the point of attachment of the driving connection from said driving element, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a pump, of the cylinder, an elongated piston-rod having a piston adapted to the cylinder, said piston-rod being slotted, a driving element for said piston-rod, a connection between said driving element and the piston-rod, a transverselydisposed support for the piston-rod, said support being situated between the driving element and the point of attachment for the connection from the same and being slotted in line with the slot of the piston-rod to accommodate the extreme vertical movement of said connection, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a pump, of the cylinder, a piston therein having an elongated slotted extension, a transversely disposed bracket to receive and support said extension, said bracket being slotted in line with the slot of the extension, and means for securing said bracket to the base of the machine so as to maintain its through-opening in line with the piston-rod, substantially as described.
4. The combination in a pump, of the cylinder, a piston having an elongated slotted extension, a transversely-disposed bracket to receive and support said extension, said bracket being slotted in line with the slot of the extension, a support for said bracket, and means for adjusting said bracket, said support having upturned ends carrying setscrews providing for such adjustment, substantially as described.
