EDWARD ARTHUR PETTIT, OF MOSELEY, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE HYDRAULIC JOINT SYNDICATE, LIMITED, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
CAST JOlN TlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO..'717,917, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed February 11, 1901. Serial-No. 46,893. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD ARTHUR PET TIT, a subject of the King of'England, residing at Moseley, Worcester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Cast Jointings, (for which I have made application for Letters Patent in Great Britain, N 0. 17,442, dated October 2, 1900,) of which the followingis a specification. This invention relates to cast joints, whether applied to bicycles or similar articles, and is herein described as applied to the frametubes of a cycle, motor, or the like.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which t Figure l is a sectional elevation of a joint constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation through the tube B of Fig. 1, showing the cross-ties hereinafter referred to.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
In carrying out the invention the parts to 1 be joined-say two of the frame-tubes of a bicycle-are perforated with any desired number of holes and are set in molds, into which the metal forming the connecting-lug is to be run. The mold is arranged so that the lug when cast will correspond to the ordinary lug; but the metal in running passes through the holes in the tubes and is constrained by suitable cores in such a manner that the lug metal is allowed to penetrate the holes, but is prevented from filling the tubes.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, A and B represent two of the tubes to be joined, and O the lug after it has been cast. A represents the holes bored in the tube before casting, and 0 represents cross ties (shown more clearly in Fig. 2) extending through the holes in the tube 13 and cast in-- tegral with the log 0. The open end of the tube B in Fig. 2 shows clearly how the ties 0 connect the opposite walls or portions of the lug O, and it will be appreciated that upon cooling the contraction of the ties C will tend to draw those portions toward each other, and consequently onto the tube B. Theportions of O which pass through the holes'in the tube 13 prevent rotary movement between the tube and lug. As shown in Figs.
1 and 2, the ties 0 lie in difierent vertical planes or side by side. However, they may all be formed in the same plane or more than one in the same plane and others in other planes, according to requirement. In preparing the parts for the casting the interior of each tube is filled with any suitable core, through which holes corresponding to the holes A in the tubes are formed to receive the metal forming the ties 0, when the casting takes place. t
The lugs can be made of any desired shape or size. If desired, where the tube is to be plugged up solid a plug of aluminium alloy or the like may be inserted before casting, and the metal running from the outer lug through the holes in the tubes would join onto the metal of the plug.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tubular joint the combination with the tube having openings in its wall, of the lug or coupling member cast about the tube and the ties cast integral with the lug or coupling member and extending through the holes across the tube in difierent planes and connecting opposite walls of' the coupling member; substantially as described.
2. In a tubular joint the combination with the tube having openings in its walls, of the lug or coupling member cast about the end of the tube and cross-ties cast integral with the lug extending through the holes in the tube and connecting opposite walls of the coupling member or lug; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ED WARD ARTHUR .PETTIT.
