ICE-CREAM FREEZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,887, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed March 10, 1902.
T0 at whom it may concern:
vide a cover for retaining the cold during the freezing operation and after the article has been frozen and packed and set aside to ripen, also to exclude dirt and prevent entrance of any foreign matter into the tub.
The invention also contemplates a novel 1 construction of the cross-bar carrying the operating shaft, which is connected to the dasher within the can by the usual bevel-gears, including the means of connection between the casing for the gear and the said cross-bar.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic fea tures of the invention are susceptible of panying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section of a freezer embodying the invention about on the line X X of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a section about on the line Y Y of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top-plan view. inverted and having the parts in position. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the bracket.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The tub 1 for holding the ice and salt or other refrigerant may be of any size and shape and is provided at its upper end at diametrically opposite points with a hook 2 and an Fig. 4 is a view of the crown or cover.

apertured lug 3, the latter being firmly attached to the tub in any substantial way. The crown or cover 4 is of a size to completely inclose the upper end of the tub and overlap and fit closely thereon and is preferably constructed of sheet metal pressed upward at its middle, so as to approximate a dome shape. An arched bar 5 is secured to the lower or concave side of the cover, and its end portions project the one to engage with the apertured lug 3 and the other to be engaged by the hook 2, whereby the bar, cover, and attached parts are firmly and securely held to the tub. Crimps Gare provided near opposite ends of the arched bar, one of the crimps having a threaded opening to receive the clamp-screw 7and the other crimp having an apertured bracket-lug 8 riveted or otherwise attached thereto.
The gear-case comprises a cap 9 and a cup 10, the two parts being secured together by means of machine screws or bolts 11. Lugs 12 and 13 project in opposite directions from the upper portion of the cup 10, the outer end of the lug 12 being contracted, so as to pass through the opening in the pendent portion of the bracket-lug 8, and the opposite lug 13 having a slot 14 to receive the clamp-screw 7. The gear-case is suspended from the arched bar 5 by means of the parts 7 and 8; hence may be quickly placed in position or removed, as required. A bearing 15 projects laterally from the gear-case, preferably from the cup 10, and receives the shaft 16, to which the crank-handle 17 is fitted. This shaft 16 is geared at its inner end to the dasher 18 and can 19 in any of the usual ways, and, as shown, it is provided at its inner end with a gearwheel20in meshingrelation with agear-wheel o 21, adapted to receive the upper end of the dasher 18, and with cog-gearing 22, applied to thecover or top of the can 19 in the wellknown manner.
When freezing the cream, custard, or like 5 delicacy, the cover or crown 4 completely incloses the top of the tub 1 and confines the cold air and prevents any foreign matter reaching the inside of the tub. After the article has been frozen the dasher and crank :00 may be removed, as well as the gear-case, and after the tub has been packed the cover or crown is replaced, thereby retaining the cold air and preventing waste of the refrigerating material, as well as excluding dirt and other matter from entering the tub.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a freezer for ice-cream, custard, sherbet and the like, and in combination with the tub, a cover or crown for closing the upper end of the tub, an arched bar secured to the lower side of the said cover and having its end portions projected beyond the same, a gear-casing detachably connected with the said bar, and securing means applied to opposite sides of the tub for cooperation with the projecting ends of the arched bar to hold the cover in place, substantially as set forth.
2. In a freezer for ice-cream and the like, and in combination with the tub, a domeshaped cover or crown for closing the upper end of the tub, an arched bar applied to the lower or concave side of the cover and having its end portions extended beyond the cover, fastenings applied to opposite sides of the tub for cooperation with the extended ends of the bar to hold the cover in place, and a gear-case detachably connected with the arched bar, substantially asset forth.
3. In an ice-cream freezer, the combination of the tub, a bar, means for detachably connecting the bar with the upper endof thetub, a cover or crown secured to the arched bar for inclosing the tub, and a gear-case. de-
tachably connected with the said arched bar and comprising upper and lower separable parts, substantially as set forth.
4. In combination, ,a tub, a bar, means for detachably connecting the bar to the tub, a lug pendent from an end portion of the bar, a case having oppositely-extended lugs, one of said lugs adapted to make detachable connection with the aforesaid pendent lug by an endwise-slidable movement, a fastening for securing the other lug to the opposite end portion of the bar, and drive-gearing housed within and carried by the said case, substantially as specified.
5. In combination, a tub, a bar, means for detachably connecting the bar to the tub, a lug pendent from an end portion of the bar, a case composed of a cap and a cup removably connected, the cup having oppositelyextended lugs and a bearing intermediate of the lugs, means for detachably connecting the case with the bar through the instrumentality of the said oppositely-extended lugs, drive-gearing housed within and carried by the said case, and a shaft journaled. in the 4 bearing of the case and in a side, of the: tub, substantially as specified.
