TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, A. NORRIS, of Spencer, in the county of Tioga, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Water-Elevator; and I do hereby declare that the `following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilledin the artto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.v
The water-elevator embraced in the present invention consists of a reservoir placed at the bottom of a.
well or cistern, but with a space` below sudcient for the water to pass into it, connecting with which Vreservoir ,is a tube extendingrup to the topof the well, where it is provided with a suitable discharge-nozzle or spout. This reservoir is provided with a loose and movable lbottom, having in its centre a valve-plug, of suicient weight to fall through the bottom, which valve-plug is provided with a rod or stem, extending up through the centre tube to its upper end, where, through a chain or other line hung to it, and passing around a pulley,
`turning in suitable supports, it is connected to and with a treadle-lever. Around this valve-plug is secured4 a series of bent springs, which, through rods arranged in the movable bottom, as the valre+plug is raised, by pressing upon the treadle to which it is connected, and thus tightened in its seat, closes the leather or other packing about the movable bottom, around the sides of the reservoir, and carrying it up therewith, draws or lifts the water above in the reservoir and tube, discharging it at the spout or nozzle to such tube, when the pressure upon the treadle being removed,.theA movable bottom and valve drop, the latter at the same time opening for the water to pass through. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved water-elevator is illustrated Figure 1 being a central vertical section through the same, and Figure 2 a plan or top View or`. the'npper side tothe movable bottom of the well or cistern-reservoir. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 4 y A, in the drawings, represents the reservoir-opening at its lower cnd, B. This reservoir is to be placed in the bottom of the well, sufficiently' above it to allow the water to pass freely up and into the same, and from its upper end is to extend a centrall tube or pipe, C, to the top ofthe well, where at such end it is to be provided with a discharge-spout or nozzle. D, the movable bottom. .to the reservoir A, in the centre of which is arranged a valve-plug or stem, E. F, a series of bentsprings, secured to and about the sides of the valve-plug E,
by which, as the plug is drawnup through the bottom toclose its centre opening G, the leather or other packingring, H, around such bottom is pressed out against the sides of the reservoir; these springs then acting upon rods I, having at their outer ends circular-shaped arms J, arranged to press against the interior surface of the packing-ring H. I2, a rod or wire, attached to upper end of valve-plug E, from which it extends up through the tube C to the top Iof the'well, whcretbroug'h a chainJ, or other line passing around a pulley, K, arranged to turn on a suitable framework, L, it is connected to a treadle-lever, M, by pressing on which the valve is raised, and through it, the movable bottom, and thus the water above, discharging it at the spout or nozzle to the tube C. To the chain connecting the valve-stem I with the treadle, a cup-shaped collar, N, is secured, at the proper point, to limit the upward and downward movement of the'valve and movable bottom it being made'of a cupshape for the reception of stones or other weighty matter, to facilitate the operation `of the water-elevator.
To oi'perate the water-elevator hereinabove described, it is only necessary to step upon the treadle, when, through it, the valve is closed and the movable bottom drawn up, carrying th'evwater above with it, discharging it at the spout or nozzle to the tube; when, stepping from the treadle, the valvenn'd movable bottom drop of their own weight, the valve opening at the same time, allowing the water to pass up `through-Ait, which, by again stepping upon the treadle, is discharged as before, and so on. i l
Among the many advantages secured by my improved water-elevator, may be here` mentioned, its simplicity of construction and arrangement, and its facility and ease of operation, requiring the expenditure of no strength upon the part ofthe operator.
I claim as new, and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent# The reservoir A, movable bottom D, and valve-plug E, all combined and arranged togethensubstuntially as and for the purpose described.
