Application led September 8,1902. Serial No. 122,616. (N mUdeL) ed certain new and useful Improvements in' Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to type-writing ina-v chines, and particularly to that class in which 1o the printing is visible to the operator.
The objects of the invention are to provide a simple and efficient lever mechanism for actuating the type-bars; to provide for the individual adjustment of the bars at'their ful- Crum-points to take up wear; io provide a type-writer in whichany key-lever may be readily removed without removing or changing any of the others. These objects I accomplish by the construction shown in the accomzo panying drawings, in which* Figure l is a sectional side elevation of a type-writing machine with my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional front elevation on line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is aV detail view showing the manner of securing vthe fulcrumrod of the type-bars in place. Fig. et is a detail sectional view on line 4 4, Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of thel type-bars.
A designates the frame of the machine in the form of an open rectangle having vertical side pieces A. The frame is provided on its inner sides with middle and rear inwardlyprojecting lugs ct a2, respectively. To the middle or intermediate side lugs a are secured 3 5 the ends of fulcrum-bar A2 and notched guidebar As by means of screws or bolts a3, while similar bars A4 Aare secured in like manner to the rear lugs 0.2. 4o and their upper edges are notched or slotted Y for the various type-bar actuating and shift-y ing levers, and the upper edges oflsaid fulcrum-bars A2 A4 are rounded, as shown, to form the fulcrum-points for said levers.
v4 5 AG designates a front plate connected at the ends to the side piecesA and having a curved lower edge to whichis connected by a plate A8 or upon which is formed the segmental series of type-bar guide-lugs A?, across the lower edges of all of which extends the round curved 5o fulcrum-rod B, common to all of the type-bars O and secured at several places by screws b, which pass through lugs 0.7 on the lower edge of certain of the guide-lugs A7 into said fulcru m-bar. (See Fig. 3.) The spaces between 5 5 the lugs of this segmental or curved series of guide-lugs A7 converge toward the printingpoint, as shown in Fig. 2. In front of the fulcrum-rod B is a curved rest A10, corresponding to the curvature of the series'of guidelugs A"I and adapted te support the outer or printing ends of the type-bars C. The upper side of the rest A10 is cushioned by means of a layer am of leather, over which is placed a layer a of felt or other sound-deadening material.
The type-bars C are all alike and each is provided at its rear or fulcrum end with a longitudinal slot o, having an upper opening c' to permit of its being read'ilyinserted upon and 7oA removed from the i'ulcrum-rod B. The forward end of the slot c is rounded to permit an easy pivotal action of the type-bar B, and
in order that wear may be compensated for and all looseness at the pivotal point be taken 7 5 up I provide the rear wall or lug c2 with a set-screw c3, which extends forwardly into the slot c and bears against the rear side of fulcrum-rod B. The screw c3 is held in its adjusted position by means of the nut- 04 on its rear end. (See Figs. l and 5.) Every type-bar C is provided on its lower edge just in front of its axis with a depending lug c5, to which the upper end of a vertically-reciprocating connecting-link C is pivotally connected. The lower ends of these links O' are provided with horizontal slots or rearwardlyopening hooks c?, which engage pins d, near the forward ends of the auxiliary or equalizing levers D. (See Figs. 1 and 4.) These levers D all fulcrum at their rear ends by means of rounded notches d' on their lower edges upon the rounded upper edge'of the rear fulcrum-bar A4 and extend thence forwardly through the slotted guide-bar A5 and 95 under a common retaining-bar A15, secured removably to the trame Aby means of screws (115. The levers D are further provided at their lower edge intermediate of their ends with longitudinal slots d2, open at their forward ends to receive pins e at the rear ends of the series of key-levers E. By means of 'these equalizer-levers D it is possible to get an equal key-depression on keys E, no matter what their length may be. The key-levers E fulcrum between their ends on the upper rounded edge of fulcrum-bar A2after passing through the slotted guide-bar A3 and are held in place by the overlying bar A16, secured removably at its ends to the frame A by means of the screws am. The key-leversEare curved downwardly in rear of their fulcrum-points and then extend rearwardly to the slots d2 of levers D, as above described. The key-levers are furthermore provided with vertically-disposed curved edges e', against which travel pins d4 at the forward ends of the auxiliary levers D, said pins d d4 being provided with antifriction-rollers to lessen friction in the slots c6 and on the edge e'. (See Fig. 4.) To the outer ends of every pair of pins d d4 is secured a plate d5, between which and the end of the levers D are held the ends of links C' and curved edges c of key-levers E. By this means the connection between these parts is maintained against accidental displacement, and yet any of the parts may be readily disconnected without disturbing any other set. For instance, to adjust any type-bar it is only necessary to turn its individual screw. To remove any type-bar, turn the screw 05 far enough to the rear to open slot at c', then draw the type-bar forwardly till it passes off of the bar B, and then remove pin d or let the pin d remain and throw link C forwardly till its slot c6 is vertical and then slip it up off of the pin d. The key-levers E and auxiliary levers D are likewise capable of easy individual removal by first removing their retaining-bars A1G A15.
It will be seen that a blow on one of the key-levers E will th row its rear end u p, which in turn will raise the front end of the corresponding lever D and cause it to push up its link C', which in turn will exert a lifting action on the type-bar C, to which it is connected, and throw the type-bar upwardly and reary wardly toward the platen, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. l. This causes less friction than would a pulling action on the heels of the type-bars.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with the frame provided with a fnlcrum rod or bar, of a series of type-bars each having an open slot receiving the said fulcrum-rod, a set-screw mounted in the inner end of each type-bar with 'its inner end entering said slot and engaging the fulcrum-rod, and mechanism for actuating the type-bars.
2. A type-bar provided at its pivotal point with a slot open at one side and a longitudinal set-screw extending through the rear end of the type-bar into the slot.
3. The combination with the frame and a vertically and rearwardly swinging type-bar pivoted at its rear end, of a key-lever fulcrumed between its ends, an auxiliary lever fulcrumed at its rear end and operatively connected between its ends tothe rear end of said key-lever, and a vertically-disposed link pivoted at its upper end to the type-bar in front of its axis and pivoted at its lower end to the front end of the auxiliary lever, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the frame and a vertically and rearwardly swinging type-bar pivoted at its rear end, of a key-lever fulcrumed between its ends, an auxiliary lever fulcrumed at its rear end and provided between its ends with a longitudinal slot, a pin extending from the rear end of said key-lever into said slot, a link pivoted at its upper end to the type-bar in front of the pivotal point thereof, and having a slotted or hooked lower end and a pin projecting from the front end of the auxiliary lever into said link-slot.
5. The combination with the frame and a vertically and rearwardly swinging type-bar, of a key-lever fulcrumed between its ends and curved downwardly and then rearwardly, an auxiliary lever fulcrumed at its rear end, pivotally connected betweenits ends to the rear end of said key-lever and in sliding engagement at its front end with the curved part e of said key-lever, a link depending from the type-bar and pivotally connected at its lower end to the front end of the auxiliary lever.
6. The combination with the frame having the type-bar fulcrum-rod, a series of spaced guides thereabove, front and rear fulcrumbars in the frame -base and provided with rounded upper edges, slotted guide-bars and overlying retaining-plates, of a series of typebars provided with open slots at their rear ends receiving said fulcrum-rod and individually removable therefrom, set-screws entering the type-bar slots and bearing on the said fulcrurn -rod, key-levers having rounded notches in their lower edges between their ends engaging the upper edge of the forward fulcrum-bar, a series of auxiliary levers fulcruming in like manner at their rear ends on the rear fulcrum-bar and provided with longitudinal slots between their ends, pins projecting from the rear ends of the key-levers into said longitudinal slots, links depending from the type-bars in front of their fulcrumrod and provided at their lower ends with rearwardly-opening slots,and pins projecting from the front ends of the auxiliary levers into said link-slots.
