SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,750, dated January 6, 1903. Application tiled January 9, 1902. Serial No. 89,027l (No model.)
To all whom it may concer-n:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing atrSt. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air or Liquid Reciprocating Pumps Having Rotary Operating Mechanism; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvementsrin reciprocating pumps having a rotary operat-v ing mechanism adapted to pump air, water,
or any liquids or gases and which areespe` cially adapted to assist in propellingvehicles that run by air by attaching the pumps toV the wheels of said vehicles.
I accomplish my purpose by the mechanismcam-plates removed, the rim carrying a belt,Vv
the inside of the Aother cam-plate showing its groove, the cylinder broken away at one end, the pistons therein, a piston-rod, two of the cam-rollers, and one of the slots for guiding the cross-arms. Fig. 3 is an end view of the pump with sufticient cut away to expose'the interior of a cam, a cross-arm and rollers in the cam-grooves, the cylinder, and the suction and discharge-pipe projections so connected as to also serve as an axle on which the cam-plates and their rigidly-attached rim revolve; and Fig. 4 is a side view of one of the pistons, with a portion broken away, and its piston-ring, the piston-rod and cross-arms, and the two cam-rollers. Fig. 5 is a section of the cylinder and its'water-jacket, pistons, and valves.

My rotary pump is held in position by base A, frame-pieces A A', and'bearings B B.
C C are cam-plates, and D is a rim rigidly attached to and forming connection between the edges of said plates for the use of a belt.
These cam-plates revolve on journals E' E', which journals are formed by projections E E of the cylinder. Cam-plates C C are preferably cast solid, with the groove F inside of each, and are set on opposite sides of cylinder-H. Whendesired,saidcylindermay be provided with an outer hollow circular -space to be used as a water-jacket T, as
shown in Fig. 5. This cylinder is provided with duplicate pistons I I and rods .I .I and cross-arms K K. These rods are adapted to screw into the pistons, thus allowing adjustment of the pistons 'for suitable clearance. Each arm carriesapair of rollers L L, adapted to run in grooves F F. Slots M M through the casting of cylinder H serve as guides for the cross-arms, thus permitting said arms to carry the rollers in the camg'rooves. Each of these grooves has a tor- -tuons channel that approaches toward and turns from the center of the cylinder in graceful and regular curves by means of intersecting circular arcs in such a way that by the revolving of the cam-plate the pistons have a reciprocatory movement. Projections E E are cast hollow for the admission into and discharge from cylinder H of air, water, or any liquids or gases and for the reception of suction-valve O and its spring and seat Yand discharge-valve P and its spring and seat.
The cam-plates are provided with and operated onV suitable bearings Y Y, placed as shown in Fig. 1. The cam-rollers are operated on roller-boerin gs Z Z,as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4.
When the pump as shown and described has been set in motion, it will be readily seen that the cam-plates are at once revolved on their axles. The cylinder H being stationary, these revolutions of the cam-plates and their peculiarly-formed grooves, which do not allow for any dead-center and in which the cam-plates rollers travel, necessarily force the pistons back and forth to their center, the valves and their springs affording means for the ingress and egress of the liquid, air or gas through the suction cate slots set longitudinally in the cylinder opposite each other at each end, the duplicate pistons, their rods and the duplicate cross-arms adapted to operate in said slots, the rollers carried at each end ot' the crossarms and the duplicate camways in which said rollers are adapted to move or run said camways consisting of a series of concave and convex arcs the four concave arcs ol` each camway being approximately a one-fourth turn and the four convex arcs a one-eighth turn, and adapted to carry the rollers of said cross-arms so that the rotating motion of the" cam-plates will cause reciprocating motion of the pistons at a very high rate of speed without damage to the machine or pump and adapting the pump to service where a high pressure is in a short time required, the suction and discharge pipes projecting oppositely from the cylinder and at right angles to the cylinder and the cam plates and ways, said suction and discharge pipes serving also as axles for the cam-plates, the suction and discharge valves serving as an inlet and outlet, respectively, for air, liquid or gas, and the valve-springs and valve-seats, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
2. In a reciprocating power-pu mp having a rotary operating mechanism the combination with a supporting-frame and the necessary driving power, of duplicate cam-plates provided with a connecting-rim, the duplicate carnways consisting of a series of concave and convex arcs the four concave arcs of each camway being approximately a one-fourth turn and the four convex arcs a one-eighth turn, a single stationary cylinder between said cam-plates, the duplicate slots set longitudinally opposite each other at each end thereof, the duplicate pistons adapted to take up all clearance, and their rods, the duplicate cross-arms adapted to operate in said slots and the rollers carried on each end of the cross-arms adapted to run in said camways, the suction and discharge pipes projecting oppositely from said cylinder and at right angles with said cylinder and the cam plates and Ways and serving also as axles for said plates, the suction and discharge valves and valve springs and seats, substantially as described and shown.
