Description
@geiten tats itttltt @fitta IMPROVEMENT Ibi BLEAGHING VEGETABLE OILS.
alle Sfilata aftosa tu in tigen tettcts patent ma making gaat at tige smite.
TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, 'liriconon LnoNuAnD, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey. have invented a new and improved Method of Bleaching Vegetable Oils; 'and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled iu the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of treating linseed and other vegetable oils, in the process of bleaching and preparing the same for paint and other purposes; and the invention consists in providing for agitatng the oil by a revolving shaft, with open or perforated wings attached thereto, within the vessel which contains the oil, while the same is being heated by a fire or by steam underneath, as will be hereinafter described. i
Figure l represents a top or plan view of the vessel with the agitator attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same through the line :e

A represents an oblong vessel with a semicircular bottom, in which vessel thc oil is placed. This semicireular vessel is supported by vertical sides and ends, B, as seen in fig. 2. It is placed upon a suitably. constructed arch, or other provision is made for applying heat to the same. In the centre of the vessel, extending longitudinally across it, there is a shaft, C, with wings, D, (more or less in numbcr,) the sweep of which describes a circle corresponding (or nearly so) with the diameter of the circular bottom of the vessel. 'lhe wings l) may be formed in any convenient manner to produce the desired cil'ect. In this example of my invention tho wings-are composed of bars or rods, a portion of which are placed longitudinally with the vessel, und the balance are placed at right angles therewith. In the drawing, two wings are shown with the bars in the lutter position. Wings formed'of perforated plates or of wire cloth would probably answer the same purpose. The shuft is marked E, and it extends through the end of the vessel, so that a pulley or crank may be attached thereto. Y F represents a pulley on the end of the shaft, to which power may be applied for revolving the agitator. G is a bevelled edge or lip around the vessel, as seen in the drawing. v
It is well known that vegetable oils are bleached by being exposed to thc rays of light in glass vessels, and this method has hitherto been resorted to for that purpose; but the action of the light upon the quiescent oil at the temperature of the atmosphere does not produce the desired effect. I have discovered that by producing aconstant and uniform agitation in the oil while the saine is subjected to a'moderate heat has the desired effect, and that linseed oil designed for paint may, by this treatment, be rendered fit for use in 'inside painting, by mixing it with a drier of my own composition, and which can be added while the oil is in a cold state, at any time, without coloring or staining it in the least, and without scorching or browning the oil, as is usually done by the ordinary process of boiling. l
Having thus 'described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- '.lhc vessel A. Containing a revolving shaft, E, with wings D, or their equivalents, substantially as described, for the purpose ot' bleaching und preparing vegetable oils. as set forth. i
