Beit known that we, LEONARD F. SEED and LEE HARPER, citizens of the United States, residing at Millet, in the county of Lasalle and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Rotary Drill, of which the following is a specilication.
Our invention is an improvement in well boring machines, and relates particularly to the class known as Lrotary drills, and the object thereof is to provide a device in which a continuous feed is supplied simultaneously with the rotation of the pipe.
Another object of our invention is to provide a gripping device for positively holding the pipe while it is being rotated, which will at the same time permit of the pipe being dropped into the shaft; and with these and other objects in view our invention consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, as will be fully described in the following speciiication,and pointed out in` the claims, reference being had to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of our improved drill. Fig. 2 is a detail section taken about on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, one of the sliding heads being removed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on about the line 3 3 of Fig; 2. Fig. Il is a detail view of one of the feed-rollers, and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail views of construction.
In the drawings, A represents a framing upon which is suitably mounted a plate A', having a raceway arranged centrally therein, in which are positioned antifriction-balls, upon which rests a large cog-wheel B, that is driven by a pinion C, which may derive its power from any suitablesource. Thegear B is provided with a central aperture, and upon eitherside thereof are cast sockets B', in which are held the lower ends of verticallyextending U-shaped standards D, in which are slidably held arins E', projecting laterally from a circular plate or disk E, which is provided with a series of depressions Ethat communicate with each other and which terminate at the center of the plate in an opening EX, that extends entirely through the plate, as shown. Working in each of these depressions or guides is a sliding head F, each having its forward orinner end terminating in arms F', in which are journaled feed rollers or disks G. These sliding heads are preferably of the same width as the depression E2 and are retained therein by` means of plates E3, which are arranged uponV the top of the disk and extend over and upon the sliding heads, thereby securely holding the heads against vertical movement and at the same timerallowing a horizontal movement thereof. The heads are controlled by screws H, that are rotatably connected to the said heads and work through threaded openings in the edge of the plate, as shown. the screws having suitable hand wheels H', 4held upon their outer ends, by which they are controlled.
One face of the arms E is provided with suitable antifrict-ion-rollers l, that may be held in position by any suitable means, but preferably by a slotted plate I. These rollers, however, are only arranged upon the side of the arms that contact with the standards, which is caused by the rotation of the gear, and. by this arrangement the friction between the arms and standards is reduced to a minimum.
In practice the pipe P, used for holding the drill, is clamped between the rollers G when the plate is in an elevated position. Power is then applied to the pinion which rotates the gear, which lcarries the plate with it, and by having the pipe securely clamped to the plate causes it also to revolve simultaneously with the dropping or feeding thereof, and in practice we prefer to arrange springs S in the lower ends of the standards to prevent jarring when the plate reaches its lowermost position.
It will thus be seen that we provide a very simple and economical form of feed device in which the old form ofV wooden clamps for droppingis entirely dispensed with. We also rollers, so as to insure a positive grip upon the pipe.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isf- 1. A device of the kind described, the combination of a gear having sockets formed thereon, andan aperture formed therein, standards held by the said sockets, cushion-springs arranged in the lower end of the standards,
prefer to flute or ronghen the face of the feeda vertically movable plate guided by the standards,sliding heads arranged in the plate, and having feed-rollers journaled in their forward ends, screws operating in the plate and having their forward ends connected to the said heads and their outer ends provided With hand-wheels, and means for revolving the plate substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a frame havin-g a gear revolubly mounted thereon, a pinion meshing With the gear, sockets formed on the gear, standards held by the said sockets and having cushion-springs arranged therein, a plate having arms projecting therefrom and which are adapted to move in the standards, the said plate having openings arranged therein, sliding heads operating in the openings, feedrollers carried by the heads, screws for operating the heads, and means for revolving the plate, substantially as shown and described. 3. In a device of the kind described, the combination of a frame, a gear revolubly mounted thereon and having an aperture arranged therein, a pinion arranged for engagement with the gear, standards carried by the gear, a plate having arms that are arranged to operate in the standards, the said plate having an opening arranged centrally therein and into which communicate a series of depressions formed in the plate, sliding heads carrying rollers operating in the depressions, and means for operating the said sliding heads, substantially as shown and described. 4. In a device of the kind described the combination of aframe, agear mounted thereon,'channelguides projecting from the gear, springs held in the lower end of the said channel-guides, a plate having arms that are provided With friction-rollers and which are arranged to travel Within the said guides, the said plate having a centrally-arranged opening into which a series of depressions formed in the plate communicate, the said depressions forming guides for the sliding heads, supplemental plates held upon the firstnamed plate, at the sides of the depressions and arranged for retaining the heads in position, and means for operating the heads, substantially as shown and described.
