ARTHUR JUNOD-TURIN OF ST. OROIX, SWITZERLAND, ASSIGNOR TO LOUIS PHILLIPE MERMOD, GUSTAVE ALFRED MERMOD, AND LEON MAROEL MERMOD, DOING BUSINESS AS MERMOD FRFRES, OF ST. OROIX, SWIT- ZERLAND, A FIRM.
MECHANICAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENT,
SE ECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,581, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed March 24, 1902. Serial No. 99,810. (No model.)
To 60% whmn it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR JUNOD-TURIN, a citizen of Switzerland, and a resident of St. Oroix, canton of Vaud, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Musical Instruments, of which the following is an exact specification.
My invention relates to mechanical musical instruments, and more especially to a device to for holding the note-disks of such instruments, and has for its purpose to provide means for easily moving the axle around which the note-disks turn. The moving of this axle has the purpose that between the I5 rows of perforations or pins of the note-disks further rows of such perforations or pins may be provided, which after moving the situation of the center of the note-disks by moving the axle around which they turn engage with the star-wheels or sounding-tongues of the instrument, so that several music-pieces can be played by means of one note-disk or that music-pieces can be played which are three or four times as long as the pieces which can be played in case the center of the music-disks cannot be moved and the intermediate rows of pins or perforations are not provided.
The devices hitherto used for displacing the center of the music-disks consist of a slide guided in the base-plate of the instrument, to
, which slide the axle around which the musicdislzs turn is fixed. This slide is provided with a projection situated so as to be moved by means of an eccentric, a cam or stepped 5 wheel, or the like. This construction has, however, the disadvantage that the device is very complicated and makes the putting in of new note-disks more difficult. These disadvantages are done away with by the presarm or holder, which serves for pressing the note-disks down, which holder is journaled so that it can be simultaneously turned and moved in its longitudinal direction, thereby taking the note-disks along. The moving of this holder can be effected in any convenient way, and the mechanism required for this purpose can be situated above the note-disk,
so that the guide of the disk is very simple and does not at all hinder the putting in of new note-disks.
In the accompanying drawings, a is the holder, provided with rollers b b for pressing the note-disk t' down. The holder or is journaled at c and d, so that it can be turned and at the same time moved in its longitudinal direction. The moving of the holder at in its longitudinal direction is effected by means of the cam or stepped wheel 6 and of the springf.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 the holder at is provided with the projection 0, which when turning the holder engages with a corresponding cut-out g, provided in the axle 72, around which the note-disk i turns. This axle his fixed to aslide, so that the same can be moved.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the axle t passes through the holder CL and is heldin its position by means of a spiral spring Z, tending to press the axle downward. The lower end of the axle t in this modification moves in a slot m of the base plate. In this latter construction the putting in of the note-disks is considerably facilitated, as the note-disks need not be put upon the axle i, but are placed upon the base-plate, whereafter the axle t, which is drawn upward by means of the handle 7c, is let loose, whereby the lower end will enter into theguide-hole of the note-disk.
It will be understood that the moving of the wheel in steps 6, the steps of which wheel can be vertical, Fig. 1, or horizontal, Fig. 5, can be effected in any convenicnt'way without changing the idea of my invention. Also the form of the cam or stepped wheel and its effect upon the holder may be varied in diifer- 5 cut ways.
Having thus fully described the nature of my said invention, What I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a device for displacing the center of the note-disks in mechanical musical instruments, the combination of a holder or arm for pressing the note-disks down, an axle around which the note-disks turn, means for connecting this axleto the holder or arm, with means for moving the holder in its longitudinal direction, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for displacing the center of the note-disks in mechanical musical instruments, the combination of a holder or arm for pressing the note-disks down, an axle around which the note-disks turn, means for connecting this axle to the holder or arm, with a cam or stepped wheel for moving the holder in its longitudinal direction, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device for displacing the center of the note-disks in mechanical musical instruments, the combination of a holder, an axle around which the note-disks turn, said axle being fixed in the holder, with a cam or stepped wheel, for moving said holder in its longitudinal direction, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR J UNOD-TURIN.
