The bosh-plate A is made by casting it in a single piece of metal, either copper or bronze being preferred; but itwill be understood that any suitable material may be employed in the manufacture of'the article. As is usual in the art, the bosh-plate is chambered to provide for the'circulation of a cooling medium therethrongh, and said hoshplate consists of a bottom a, a top I), an outer end wall (2, and an inner end wall or nose The outer end wall 0 is curved in an arc whose radius corresponds to the exteriorsurface of the blast-furnace; but the inner end wall (I is not only curved concentric with the wall a, but it is also rounded or curved in cross-section, so as to join the bottom a and top b in the manner shown by Fig. 3. -The described construction of the bo sh plate provides an internal circulating-chamber; but in order to secure an equitable distribution of the circulating medium through this chambered plate I prefer to employa division-wall or partition B, being cast as an integral part of the plate, although it may be inserted and secured therein. This partition or division-wall B is disposed in a position parallel to one of the walls of the bosh-p'ate, preferably to the bottom a, and said partitionextends'from one side wall e to the other and from the outer end wall 0 toward the inner end wall (Z. It will be understood that this throat lies at the nose of the boshplate and connects the upper and lower compartments of the chamber therein, so as to insure circulation of the cooling medium around the partition 13 and through the nose of the hosh-plate, which is the hottest part thereof.
The outer endwall c of-the bosh-plate is provided with a threaded opening or nipple h, which has communication with the chamber C and is located at a point at or near the middle of the bosh-plate, said opening or nipple adapted to receive the inlet-pipe, whereby the cold feed-water is supplied to one chamber of the bosh-plate. This wall 0 of the bash-plate is also provided with another opening or nippie 1', the latter being in communication with the chamber 0 and situated, preferably, near the middle of the bosh-plate and close to the plane of the opening or nipple h, although the relative positions of the inlet and outlet openings or nipples h i may be varied within The opening or nipple "21 is adapted to receive or have coupled thereto an off-bearing or outlet pipe, which serves to convey the hot water away from the bosh-plate, and it will be noted that the off-bearing or discharge pipe has comm unication with the compartment 0 of the boshplate, thus disposing the connection of the inlet and outlet pipes on opposite sides of the partition or division-plate B and insur-' ing the supply of cold water to one chamber and the exit of the heated water from the other chamber of the bosh-plate.
D indicates a deflector which is disposed in the compartment 0 of the bosh-plate at a point opposite to the inlet opening or nipple h. This deflector may be secured in the chamber of the bosh-plate, or it may be cast as an integral part thereof, and said deflector may take any appropriate form, so as to diffuse the inflowing current of water over the bottom a of the bosh-plate. As shown by Fig.
1, however, a suitable form of the deflector is.
the acute-angled form having its apex facing toward the inlet opening or nipple, while the inclined surfaces of this deflector diverge rearwardly and toward the corners fof the bosh-plate. The inflowing water impinges the apex of the deflector, and the diverging surfaces thereof difiuse the water over the bottom a and through the lower chamberC, thereby directing the water toward the cor ners and the inner end or nose of the boshplate.
One of the peculiarities of my invention resides in the top b of the bosh-plate having an upwardly-arched form, as shown more clearly by Fig. 2, said arched top gradually sloping in a downward and inward direction toward the inner wall or nose of the boshplate, thus making the bosh-plate narrower at the nose than at the outer end. This par ticular form of the top I) has a tendency to equalize the flow of the water over the partition or plate B, and this equalization of the circulation will tend to keep the whole inner partor nose of the bosh-plate at an even temperature.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bosh-plate provided with a continuous horizontal chamber which extends from front-to rearandfrom side to side thereof, a
horizontal division-plate extending through said chambenfrom the rear nearly to the front and dividing the chamber into upper and lower compartments which communicate only at the inner end of the bosh-plate, and water connections located at the outer edge of the bosh-plate and on opposite sides of the line of union betweent'he divisiomplate and the outer end wall of the bosh-plate.
2. A bosh-plate comprising side and end walls, a top and'a bottom, the whole forming a chamber which extends continuously from rear to front 51nd from side to side, a horizontal division-plate extending through said chamber from the rear nearly to the front and dividingthe chamber into upper and lower compartments which communicate uninterruptedly at the front of the plate, the top of said bosh-plate being arched transversely and inclined toward the divisionplate, such inclination of the top being in a downward direction from the rear toward the front and making the upper compartment of the chamber increase in depth from the front toward the rear.
3. A Dosh-plate provided with a divisionplate disposed substantially parallel to the bottom thereof and having compartments which communicate only at the inner portion or nose of said bosh-plate, inlet and outlet openings in communication with the respective compartments of said boshplate, and a deflector disposed in one compartment in a position opposite to the inlet-opening.
