ROBERT ALLEN, OF BIGTIMBER, MONTANA.
TYPE-WRITER WORD-COUNTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,151, dated December 30, 1902.
Application filed April 16,1902. fierial No. 108,190. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ROBERT ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bigtimher, in the county of Sweet Grass and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Word-Counting Attachments for lype J/Vriting Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates generally to typewriting machines, and particularly to wordcount-ing attachments for type-writing machines of that class in which the type-levers and the space-operating mechanism is operated by rock-shafts to which motion is imparted by the depression of the keys and space-bar, such as the machine commonly known as the Smith Premier, and my invention has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive device adapted for attachment to any typewriting machine of the class above mentioned for counting or registering each word written by the machine and without liability of accidentally registering more than one word at a time; and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a detail perspective view of a portion of the back or rear frame and one of the side frames of a type-writing machine of the type named, showing my counting attachment in place thereon; Fig. 2, a bottom plan view of a portion of a type-writing-machine frame, showing my device in position; Fig. 8, a side elevation of my device in position; Fig. 4, arear elevation of the same; Fig. 5, a detail plan view of the operating-levers; Fig. 6, an edge view of the letter-key-operated levers; Fig. 7, a plan view of said levers, and Fig. 8 an edge view of one of the supporting-bars.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throu ghout all the views.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a portion of one of the side frames of a typewriting machine, and B a portion of the rear frame. To the rear frame or a plate attached to said frame is connected the grate C, as is usual in the class of machines above de scribed, by books or brackets, so as to be capable of longitudinal motion when operated upon by the fingers projecting from the rockshafts, (not shown,) which are operated by the letter-keys in order to move the carriage and form the spaces between the letters, while a rock-shaft D, having its bearings in the front and rear walls of the machine, is operated by means of a curved arm E, carried by the space-bar, (not shown,) coming in contact with the finger or crank F on said shaft to rock the latter at each depression of the space-bar, and thereby operates the grate through the pin and finger F to shift the carriage to form a space between the words.
The above-described mechanism is common in the class of machines mentioned above and of which a full description may be found in United States patent to Alex. T. Brown, No. 465,451, dated December 22, 1891.
In applying myinvention to the machine I first arrange the supporting-bars G across the bottom of the machine from side to side, catching the stationary or rigid hooksotthereof onto one of the side frames and the adjustable hook I) at the opposite ends of the bars onto the other side frame and by tightening the nuts a secure the same firmly in position. To one of the bars G is pivotally secured the end of a long lever H, which extends to and enters one of the openings in the grate C or, as shown, in a recess cl, formed in said grate therefor. To the lever H is pivotally attached a short link or leverl, the other end of which is similarly attached to a lever J, one end of which is pivotally secured tothe other bar G. The lever H extends across the bars G,
and the link or lever I extends at right angles from the said lever H, while the lever J extends from one bar G to the other, and its free end rests on the latter. Thus it will be observed that the movement of the grate C is imparted to lever II and that the latter through link or lever I moves the free end of lever J and causes it to slide on the bar G, on which it rests.
To the rock-shaft D is connected one end of a slide-rod K by means of a clamp L, in which the end of the rod is loosely hung, the other end of said rod being pivotally attached to the end of a lever M, which is pivotally supported near its lower end from the bracket N, so that the longitudinal movement of the rod K imparted by the rock-shaft D causes the lever M to swing on its pivot. A lever O is pivotally secured at its upper end to the bracket N in position to be engaged by the lever M when it is swung toward the former, and thus rock or swing the lower end of the lever 0 toward the frame. The lever O is pivotally attached at its lower end to a link P, as is also the end of a lever Q, which is connected at its upper end to the slide-rod R of the registering device S. The lever Q passes through a perforated lug or eyebolt T, secured to the bracket N, whereby it may be tilted or rocked by link P when the same is moved in order to push said rod R in. To the end of link P is also pivotally attached a trigger or trip-lever U, having a curved edge against which a pin V, projecting from rod K, strikes as the rod is moved outwardly by rock-shaft D in order to tilt or raise one end of said lever U up and in position to allow the end of lever J to pass thereunder when it is operated by the movement of the grate C in response to the operation of the space-bar. When the space-bar is released and the grate is moved back into its normal position by the spring (not shown) commonly employed for the purpose, the trigger or trip-lever U drops back to its normal position in the path of lever J to be engaged thereby when the same is operated by the lever-key which is first depressed after the depression of the space-bar, and thus tilt lever Q, which withdraws the rod R and causes the operation of the register mechanism to register a Word. The end of the trigger or trip-lever U is prevented dropping below the path of lever J by its rear end engaging the end of lever Q.
WV is a bracket secured to'the side frame of the machine by hooking one end thereover and the other passing under the frame and being secured by a set-screw or otherwise.
I make no claim for the registering device,
as any suitable type of such devices may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a word-counting device for type-writ,- ing machines, the combination, with the space-bar rock-shaft, the grate, and a registering device, of a rod having one end connected to the said rock-shaft, a pivoted lever having one end connected pivotally with said rod, means operated by said rod and lever for moving the slide-rod of the register in one direction, and means operated by the grate for moving said rod in the opposite direction.
2. In a word-counting device for type-writing machines, the combination, of a registering device having an operating slide-rod, a
pivoted lever connected at one end to said rod,
a link connected to the other end of said lever, a pendent lever connected to said link, a lever-arm for tilting the pendent lever, a rock-shaft, a rod connecting said rock-shaft and lever-arm, a trigger or trip-lever tripped by said rod, and means for engaging said trigger ortrip-lever to movethe slide-rod to its normal position.
3. In a word-counting device for typewriting machines, the combination, of a rockshaft, a grate, a pivoted lever having its free end engaged by said grate, a parallel lever, a link connecting said levers, a trigger or triplever arranged to be engaged by the free end of said parallel lever, a registering device having a slide-rod, a lever connected to said trip-lever and to said slide-rod, whereby the slide-rod is moved in one direction, and means operated by the rock-shaft for moving the slide-rod in the opposite direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT ALLEN.
