IMPROVEMENT I N GATES.
@la rlgemle -rsfaret tu in time Eaters ttmt mit making @nl nftlge same.
TO ALL WH-OM IT MAY CONCERN:-
- Be it known thatl I, WILLIAM J. ALnXAXnER,.`of Rolling Prairie, in the county of La Porte, and State of Indiana, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Gates; andI do hereby declare that the following is a.
full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to thc annexed drawingsmaking a part ofthis specification, in `which l Figure l represents the gate closed, and
Figure 2- represents 4the lgate elevated and open. :A represents the gate; B represents post to which the gate A is attached; C represents brace in the elevating frame; D D represent plates, which are stationary; E represents brace attached at 'ba-se of the post B,
and towhich the outside plate `D is attached at the top opposite the top of the post B; F represents the chain which is attached to the gate A, and runs over a pulleyinthe frame abovejthe brace C; G represents the weight which is attached to the end of the chain' F, which chain 'F runs on a pulley in the top of the brace E; H represents the hinge which passes partly around the post B; this uiay be sawedA out of wood, and the post B need only to be rounded where the hinge His placed thereon. I represents a notched pin placed in the outside end of the inside plate D, and through which the chain F is placed, so that when the' gate A is thrown open, it is drawn shut by the weight G; or, vin case it is desired to havethe gate A remain open, by removing-the pin I, the gate A is held open by the weight G. J' represents a pin, which is passed through the bars of the inside of the frame, at the lower end, which are on either side of the gate A, and through the three top bars of the gate Aare holes near the centre of said gateA, through which the pin passes. By removing the pin J the gate A is elevated to any height desired, by means' of the Weight G, so that no lifting is necessary to elevate the gate A; and' the gate A may be left at any height desired by inserting the pin J, and may swing free from snow ormud, or maybe left so that sheep or smaller animals may pass under, and still keep out horses and cattle. The outside 'plate D is so arranged that it cannot be moved while the inside plate D Works upon a pin in the top of the Post B. There is no strain upon the gate A; all the weight of the gate A is upon the braces C and E,'vhich are braced upon the post B. 'By placing thebraces Gand E and the weight G in this manner, they are out of the way of a load. passing through. There need ibe no bolts used in the construction of the gate A, as there is no strain thereon.
What I claire as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The gate'A, the braces C and E, the chain F, with the weight Grand pin I, as substantially arranged and set forth in the foregoing.
WILLAM J. ALEXANDER.
