' UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
EDGAR A. MARSHALL, OF VANCOUVER, CANADA.
JAR-coves SEAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,730, dated December 23, 1902.
Application filed Angust1,1902.
To all whom, may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR A. MARsHALL, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British 00- lnmbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Jar-Cover Seal, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to an improved means for sealing the covers of jars and securing the same. It is especially intended to seal the joints and secure the covers of jars used for the purpose of preserving potted meats or the like, which being put up hot have a vacuum within to assist the sealing.
My device is fully described in the following specificationand illustrated in the drawings which accompany it, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of a vitreous jar having my cover-seal and clip; Fig; 2,"a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 a detached clip.
In the drawings the body of the jar is'rep resented by 2 and the cover by 3. The inner edge of the mouth of the jar is provided with an upwardly-projecting annular lip 2 adapted to enter freely a corresponding recess 3 of the cover, and surrounding the lip of the jar and its corresponding recess of the cover are flat seats 2 3", the former adapted to receive a joint-ring l, of rubber or similar material. As the potted meats for which the cover-joint is designed are filled into the jars at a comparatively high temperature, this j oint-ring A efiects the sealing and retention of the vacuum so obtained, and to insure a more efficient seal the seat 3 of the cover is provided with a V-shaped downwardly-projecting annular bead 3, which becomes pressed into the soft material of the ring by the external air-pressure. This alone pro vides an efficient air-tight joint; but to insure the joint being pressed into close contact during the cooling and before the vacu- Serial No. 118,008. (No model.)
um is formed and, further, to prevent dislodgment of the cover by jar or shock during transit thenpper side of the edge of the cover and the under side of the seat 2 of the jar are each provided with an annular rounded bead 2 3 adapted to receive and retain two or more clips 5. (See Fig. 3.) These clips are made of thin resilient material and are shaped to conform to the beads, the distance between the bent-over ends 5 being such as will give a nip or hold between cover and jar. One or both ends of 5 are turned slightly out, as 5", which provides an engagement for the finger-nail and facilitates removal.
I'am aware that prior to my invention jars and pots have been provided with rubber sealing-rings variously applied, and many different methods have been used for holding the joint-surfaces together; but
What I claim as new, and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is-
A jar-closure as described; comprising in combination, the jar 2 having a beaded extension 2 convex on its under side, a cap 3 having a beaded portion 3" convex on its upper side and having a V-shaped extension 3 on its lower side, a washer 4 disposed between the beaded extension 2" of the jar 2 and the beaded portion 3 on the cap, and adapted to be engaged by the V-shaped extension 3", and
