CENTRIFUGAL APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,71 1,, dated December 23, 1902.
Application filed June 10, 1902.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLF HOLLAND,'a citizen of Germany, residing at Magdeburg, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Empire of Germany, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a centrifugal apparatus, and relates particularly to improvements in collecting-plates for this class of devices as disclosed in Letters Patent No. 703,728, granted to me July 1, 1902.
The object of the same is to provide means whereby liquids of difierent density and quality can be readily separated and collected into separate chambers.
To this end the invention consists of a centrifugal apparatus comprising a base-plate divided into compartments, a collecting-plate having a plurality of openings, a movable cover plate having corresponding recesses adapted to register with said openings, and guiding-bladeson said cover-plate for directing the flow of liquid to a predetermined compartment, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2'are plan views, respectively, of the collecting-plate and cover-plate. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of thebase-plate of the centrifugal apparatus with the collecting-plate in position. Fig. t is a transverse section of the cover-plate. Figs. 5 and 6 are plan views, respectively, of modified forms of collectingplate and cover-plate. Fig. 7 is a central vertical section of the lower portion of a modified form of apparatus. Fig. 8 is a transverse section of a cover-plate for the same. Fig. 9 is a central vertical section of my improved centrifugal apparatus, andFig- 10 is a plan view thereof partly broken away.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, as shown in Figs. 2 and 9, the base-plate of the apparatus is divided into collecting compartments or chambers a and b, which are provided with discharge-openings c and d, respectively, the same beingsimilar to the construction shown in said before-mentioned Letters Patent. I
Serial No. 111,003. (No model.)
slightly larger than the portions m of the collooting-plate 6, while the recesses k are somewhat sr'naller than the openings It, so that the covering portions 'n, will completely close the openings when properly adjusted. Downwardly-diverging blades Z are provided upon the upper surface of the covering portions n, that serve to turn the course of the liquid gathering on the cover-plate into the openin gs k of the collecting-plate, when said plate and cover-plate are-so adjusted as to have the recesses of the latter in register with the openings of the former for collecting the liquid into the chamber a. In order to direct the flow of liquid into chamber b, the openings of the collecting-plate e are closed by moving the cover-plate axially, so that the covering portions thereof will cover the openings, and then the liquid will flow down the collecting-plate and cover-plate and run oif between the blades Z into the chamber b.
The modification shown in Figs. 5 to 8 is a construction of the apparatus which is utilized when it is desired to separate the liquid into more than two qualities. The base-plate is provided with collecting compartments o, q, and b, formed by upright annular flanges o 0, adjacent to the circumferential flange of the base-plate, said compartments having, respectively, the discharge-outlets c, r, and d. The collecting-plate e in this construction is provided with openings 70, that are arranged in regularly-spaced pairs, the same being staggered in two concentric circles. These openings are sufficiently wide to extend transversely across the annular.chambers-that is, one row arranged over each chamber. Be-
tween the pairs of openings 70 are the closed portions m, approximately the same length as an opening 75.
The cover-plate f instead of having the recesses and the covering portions 11 of the same length, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the recesses 7c are as wide as the length of one of the openings k in the collecting-plate, and the intermediate portions 02. of the cover-plate are each equal to a portion m and an adjacent opening k, as shown in Fig. 5 and 7, so that the covering portion n will always cover one or the other row of openings 70. This form of cover-plate permits of only one row of openings of the collecting-plate to be open at one tin1e,s0 that the liquid can be directed in either of the annular chambers, or the complete closing of all the openings simultaneously,so as to cause the liquid to flow over the cover and collecting plates and discharge into the centralchainber b. The portionsn are provided with blades b, that diverge from adjacent the outer periphery to points that lie in a line about medial of the inner and outer peripheries, so that the liquid is directed into the chamber a or q, according to whether the upper or lower row of openings is uncovered.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Ina centrifugal apparatus, the combination, with a base-plate having aplurality of compartments, of a collecting-plate provided with openings communicating with said compartments, a cover-plate having recessed portions to permit the covering and uncovering of said openings, and guiding-blades on said cover-plate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a centrifugal apparatus, the combination, with a base-plate having a plurality of separate chambers, of a collecting-plate provided with a plurality of evenly-spaced openings, a cover-plate provided with evenlyspaced recessed portions, said recessed portions being adapted to open or close said openings for directing the flow of liquid separately into one of said chambers, substantially as set forth.
3. In a centrifugal apparatus, the combition, With a base-plate having a plurality of separate annular chambers anda central chain ber,of a collecting-plate supported above said annular chambers and provided with annular rows of openings evenly spaced apart in staggered groups, a cover-plate supported on said collecting -plate having regularlyspaced recesses correspondingin Width to the length of said openings and having intermediate covering portions between said recesses for covering either one of the rows of openings, and guiding-blades on said intermediate covering portions for directing the flow of liquid separately into any one of said chambers, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as my invention Ihave signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLF HOLLAND.
