To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL FERDINAND GRoH- MANN, a subject of the-Grand Duke of Meclc' lenburg-Schwerin, residing at Giistrow, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenbu rg-Schwerin,-Germany, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for'Emptying the Collecting-Boxes or Receivers of Potato and Similar Harvesting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a device designed to empty the collecting-box or re-' ceiver of potato and similar harvesting machines.
The characteristic feature of my invention In the accompanying drawings oneform ofmy invention is represented as applied to a potato harves ting machine.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of such a machine, showing thecollecting-box at the back end of the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the collecting-box and its operating mechanism. Fig. 3-is a cross-section through the collecting-box, showing the operating parts in elevation; and Fig. 4 is a plan of Figs. 2 and 3.
The collecting-box 1 is fitted to the hinder end of a potato-digging machine of the usual form,which bears on the side beams 3 a plowshare and above this a rapidly-rotating drum, which throws the potatoes dug up by the plowshare into a bucket-elevator, by means of which they are carried onto the oscillating sieve 18, from which they fall through the wide-meshed portion of the sieve into the collecting-box forming the essential feature of the present invention.
The collecting-box 1 is supported in the hanger-bearings 2, secured to the extended side beams 3 of the machine. On both sides of the collecting-box the flaps or doors 4: are provided, being jointed together by means of the arms 5 to the rods 6. In the bearings '7, which are supported by the side beams 3, is journaled a shaft 8, on which are secured two levers 9 9 which are secured together. To these levers 9 9 the rods 6 are so secured that they can be easily disconnected. On the shaft 8 are also mounted two levers 1O lever 14.
10*, which are rigidly secured together, by which levers the reciprocating motion of the levers 9 9is obtained. Underneath the shaft 8 and at right angles to the same is provided a shaft 12, journaled in the bearings 11, secured on the side beams 3, and on this shaft is secured the chain-wheel 13,whichis driven bya chain from the main shaft or axle of the machine. On the shaft 12 is also secured a Another lever 15, which i's similar to the lever 14,is loosely mounted on'the' shaft 12 and is held bya pin 16, secured in and projecting at both ends beyond the shaft 12, which engages ina groove in the enlarged belief the lever 15, a spring 17 being provided to keep the hub and pin in engagement, as shown itrFig. 3 of the drawings.
Between. the shafts 8 and 12 and the collecting-box is suspended an oscillating sieve 18,which is oscillated bya rod 30. The bearings of this sieve are provided on the side beams of the machine.
If new it is desired to empty the collectingbox 1 on one side, the closing device or door on the other side is closed, for which purpose the pins provided on the arm 5 are caused to engage with the hooks 19, connected to the side beam of the machine. The rod 6 of the other closing device of the collecting-box is secured to the corresponding lever 9. When the closing device or door 4 is closed, the lever 9 is moved into its topmost position, and the rod 6 takes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. As the shaft 12 rotates the lever 15 will strike against the lever 10 and raise the same into the position shown in Fig. 3. During this rotation of the lever 10 the lever 9, which is secured on the same shaft as the lever 10, will be moved from its vertical position into that shown in full lines in Fig. 3, again opening the closing device or door 4 by means of the rod 6, so that the contents of the collecting-box will fall out onto the ground.
As the levers 14.- and 15 are arranged at an angle of ninety degrees, the lever 14 will now engage with the lever 10 and move it into its topmost position again, thus closing the door 4 again. The lever 15 is arranged, as described, so as to be movable, to allow it to be moved in certain cases in the same direction as the lever 14, by which can be effected the periodical opening and shutting of the collecting-box.
This operation will be repeated continuously as long as the machine remains in motion. It will be seen, therefore, that the potatoes will be alternately collected in and removed from the box 1. If it is desired to empty the potatoes on the other side of the machine, this can be done by placing the arm 5 and lever 6 on the left side of Fig. 3 into the same position as that shown on the right side.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. Inaharvesting-machineforpotatoesand the like, the combination of a collecting-box 1 supported in bearings secured to the frame of the machine, closing devices 4 at the ends of said collecting-box, an arm 5 secured to each closing device, a rod 6 jointed to each arm 5, levers 9, 9 adapted to be jointed to the rods 6, means for reciprocating said levers 9, 9, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a harvesting-machine for potatoes and the like, the combination of a collecting-box l pivotally supported in bearings secured to the frame of the machine, closing devices 4 at the ends of said collecting-box, an arm 5 secured to each closing device, a rod 6 jointed to each arm 5, a shaft 8 arranged parallel to the frame of the machine, levers 9, 9 rigidly connected together and mounted on the shaft 8, levers 10, 10 likewise mounted on said shaft 8 and means for reciprocating the said levers 10, 1O and thus the levers 9, 9", substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a harvesting-machine for potatoesand the like, the combination of a collecting-box l pivotally supported in bearings secured to the frame of the machine, closing devices 4 at the ends of said collecting-box, an arm 5 secured to each closing device, a rod 6 jointed to said arms 5, a shaft 8 arranged parallel to the frame of the machine, levers 9, 9 rigidly connected together and mounted on the shaft 8, levers 10, 10 rigidly secured together and. likewise mounted on said shaft 8, a shaft 12 arranged at right angles to the shaft 8, levers l4, l5 arranged at a right angle to each other and adapted when the shaft 12 is rotated to alternately raise and lower the levers 10, 10 and consequently reciprocate the shaft 8 and the levers 9, 9, substantially as and for the purpose described.
