STOVE 0R HEATER [Application Bled Max. 4, 1902.:
(No Modei.)
TATES UNHE ISAAC BROOKE, OF POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
STOVE OR HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 716,661, dated December 23, 1902.
Application filed March 4, 1902. Serial No. 96 1616 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC: BROOKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stoves or Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a stove or heater provided with a fender or skirt, onone por tion of which is a neck or fine which rises therefrom and is in communication with the same, and an air-heatingchamber'on the stove or heater, said neck or fine being provided in its side with a dampered' opening through which cold air may enter and be entrained by the column of air rising within said chamber, thus supplying a large column of air to be heated, the inlet-port of said chamber being in the wall of the stove or heaterabove the top of said fender or skirt.
Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of a stove embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section on line 00 at, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section online y y, Fig."
1. Figs. 4: and 5 represent side elevations'of detached parts.- 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a stove, and B designates a shield or fender around the fire-pot thereof, which parts, excepting the feature of my invention applied thereto, are of usual construction.
C designates a vertical partition within the body of the stove, the same extending closed from the top and bottom thereof and forming, with the exterior adjacent wall 0 of the stove, an air-heating chamber, the same being within the combustion-chamber of the stove.
E designates the flue for the smoke or prodnets of combustion from the stove, the same passing through the chamber D without being in communication therewith and having a connection with the exterior collar F. d
In the wall 0, near the lower end thereof,
is an opening G, surrounding which is a chan nel or passage H, in a neck J, formed'by an upward extension of the rear of the fender, said neck orextension being set out from said wall 0', thus forming a communication between said fender and the chamber D. In
M is opened.
said extension J is a series of openings covered by the'damper K, which is adjacent to the opening G, but above the fender, and is set back therefrom near to the body of the stove, so as to avoid improper contact of garments therewith. The top of the chamber D is open and in communication with the collar L thereon. In said collar is the damper M, and on the side thereof is the damper N.
The operation is as follows: The air in the apartment received by the fender B and that radiated from around the fire-pot is directed to the passage H, and thus to a neck J and chamber D, it being noticed that cool or cold air entering the dampered openings G is entrained by the column of air rising Within said chamber D, whereby the volume of air admitted into the latter is highly heated, in which condition it escapes into the apartment through the damper N, which is open, the damper M being closed; but said damper N may be closed and the hot air directed into an apartment above through a flue connected with the collar L, in which case the damper When the damper K is closed, air is prevented from entering the chamber D, the effect of which is evident. It will be noticed that the inlet to said chamber comprises the opening or port G in the wall 0 of the stove, as previously stated, said port being, however, above the top line of the fender or skirt B and so is of itself removed from communication with the latter; but here it will be perceived that the neck J rises from said fender or skirt and forms a bridge extending from the latter to said port G and incloses said port, providing a channel between the parts in question.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire'to be limited in each case to the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a stove, .a fender, an upwardly-extending channeled neck on said fender, and an air-heating chamber on said stove, said neck being in communication with said fender and said chamber and having adampered opening in its side.
chamber and at bottom with said fender and said chamber being provided with a damper.
4:. A stove having a fender, an upwardlyextending channeled neck on said fender in communication therewith, said neck being provided with a dampered opening in its side, an air-chamber on the combustion-chamber of the stove in communication with said neck, and a damper at the discharge end of said chamber.
