CONVERTIBLE LOUNGE.

Be it known that I, THEODORE HAUSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Lounges, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to an improved lock for a swinging leaf of a convertible lounge or sofa-bed; and my primary object is to provide a lock of simple and inexpensive construction capable of locking automatically to secure the swingingleaf in a horizontal position and releasing automatically to permit said swinging leaf to be lowered.

My invention is illustrated in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an end View of a convertible lounge, couch, or sofa-bed equipped with my improvements; Fig.2, abroken sectional view taken parallel to an end of the couch and looking at the end from the inner side thereof, said View showing the folding leaf, to which my present invention relates, in a depressed position; Fig. 3, a similar View showing said folding leaf elevated to the horizontal position and locked in said position; Fig. 4, a broken horizontal section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the swinging leaf ele' vated somewhat above the horizontal position to bring the automatic release into operation.

In a couch of the general construction here shown the main parts are a stationary hori zontal seat-frame A, a rear swinging leaf B, capable of assuming either of three positions, and a front swinging leaf C, capable of assuming either of two positions. The drawings show the leaf B provided with a lock D, which is described in detail and claimed in my ap plication of even date, Serial No. 84,638. The swinging leaf C is provided with a locking device E capable of automatic engagement and release, said locking device forming the subject-matter of the present application.

The seat-frame Ais supported on end standards F, (one only shown,) said end standards being connected by longitudinally-extending members G. (One only shown.) The end standards preferably include upright angleirons ct Ct'.

Each locking device E, of which there preferably is one located at each end of the lounge, comprises a locking member b, pivotally connected at one end by means of a pivot b' with the leaf C and provided at the other end with a notch b2, affording shoulders b3 b4, and provided adjacent to said notch with an offset end b5 and a releasing member c, depending from a pivot c with which the seat-frame A is provided outside the upright cd, said releasing member having at-its lower end a loop c2 for receiving loosely the member l). The member b passes loosely through a slot d with which the upright ct is provided, the lower end of said slot affording a shoulder d, with which the shoulder b3 of the notch b2 lockingly engages to hold the leaf C in a horizontal position, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The member c preferably is formed with a curve or offset at c2, the purpose of which is to cause the lower end of said member to swing close to the lower wall of the slot d un der certain conditions, this being accomplished, as is evident, by the proper location of the center of gravity of the member. When the leaf C is raised to the horizontal position of Fig. 3, the shoulder b3 drops over the lower wall of the slot, the weight of the member b being sufficient to push the lower end of the member c away from the upright 0,', as shown in Fig. 3. When the leaf C is raised to the position shown in Fig. 5, the lower end of the member b is swung upwardly somewhat by reason of the shoulder b4 coming in contact with the upright ct, thus permitting the loop of the member cto pass beneath the shoulder b3. If now the leaf C be quickly raised and allowed to fall, the member c will serve to carry the shoulder b3 over the lower wall of the slot d, thereby effecting a release from the locking engagement. In practice the leaf C is given a quick slight-upward movement from the position shown in Fig; 3 and is then 95 quickly lowered, thereby causing the release to take place without any difficulty.

Couches of the description herein shown are generally composed entirely of metal, the

frame being preferably principally of steel roo angle-irons, the seat-frame and swinging leaves being provided with a suitable Wirenetting. Removable mattresses are usually employed in connection with the couches.

It Will be understood that this article of furniture may be employed in either of three positions: first, the leaves B and C may both be dropped to a depending vertical position;.

second, said leaves may both be brought to a horizontal position, thereby affording a bed, and, third, the leaf C may be brought to a vertical depending position and the leaf B to the standing position indicated in full lines in Fig. 1, thereby affording a sofa-bed having a back. It willbe understood that the offset ends b5 prevent the links b from being Wholly withdrawn from the slots d.

Changes in details of construction within the spirit of my invention may be made. Hence no undue limitation is to be understood from the foregoing detailed description.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ish

l. In an article of the character described, the combination of a seat-frame, a suitable support therefor, a swinging depending leaf, a locking-link connected with said leaf and provided with a locking-shoulder, a stationary locking-shoulder engaged by said rstnamed shoulder, and an automatic pivoted depending releasing-link moved through the mediumV of said first-named link and with which said first-named link slidingly engages.

2. In an article of the character described, the combination with a stationary seat-frame, and a dependingswinging leaf, of locking and releasing means, comprising a leaf-carried pivoted locking-link provided with'a lockingshoulder, a stationary locking-shoulder upon which said link slides, and an automatic depending releasing-link moved through the medium of said first-named link having a guide for said locking-link, said guide serving during release to hold said link-carried locking-shoulder out of engagementwith said stationary shoulder.

3. In an article of the character described,

the combination with a stationary seat-frame,

and a depending swinging leaf, of locking and releasing means, comprising a stationary guide, a notched leaf-carried locking-link provided with means for preventing complete Withdrawal from said guide, and a gravityacting releasing-link pivotally supported from said seat-frame and having a link-receiving guide adjacent to said stationary guide.

4. In an article of the character described, the combination with a stationary frame provided with a stationary guide and lockingshoulder, and a depending swinging leaf, of a leaf-carried locking-link provided toward its free end with a locking-shoulder, and a movable releasing-link on said frame frictionally engaged by said locking-link and moved outwardly thereby during the elevation of the leafto the horizontal position to permit said locking-link to lock, said releasing-link being relieved from said frictional engagement by further elevation of said leaf 'and permitted to move inwardly into position to carry the locking-shoulder of the locking-link over the stationary locking-shoulder when the leaf is dropped.

5. In an article of the character described, the combination with a stationary frame having a stationary guide and locking-shoulder, and a swinging depending leaf, of a lockinglink connected with said leaf and provided with a shoulder for engaging said first-named shoulder, and a pivoted depending releasinglink on the outside of said frame having a projection frictionally engaged by the locking-link and having a bend tending to throw the lower extremity of the link close to the stationary locking-shoulder, for the purpose set forth.

6. In an article of the character described, the combination with a stationary frame provided with a stationary guide and lockingshoulder, and a pivoted depending leaf, of a leaf-carried locking-link extending through said guide and provided with a locking-shoulder, and a releasing-link pivotally supported on said frame and engaging said locking-link and moved automatically into the releasing position during the elevation of the leaf above the horizontal position and serving to carry the link-carried locking-shoulder over the stationary locking-shoulder when the leaf is dropped, for the purpose set forth.
