Description

@www mmwm my Mmm g PATENTED @Minh 1.3125. gtm @Hint RODNEY L. SMITH, OF WOLCOTTVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
I Letters Patent No. 71,655, dated December 3, 1867.
IMPROVED TWINE-HOLDEP..
dtlgz flgehlrlt referrer tu it time Enters tant mit mating @mrt nf its tame.
'ro ALL WHoM IT MAY ooNoERNQ Be it known that I, RODNEY Ii. SMITH, of vVoleottville, in the county of Litchfield, `and State of Conn'ee-` tient, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful .Improvement in '.lhvine-IJIoldel-s;v and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specoation, wherein.-
Figure 1 is a vertical section of said twine-holder,l and Figure 2 is a plan of the holder as opened, showing the two halves thereof.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Twine-holders have heretofore `been made with a hole at the top for the thread, twine, or cord to be drawn out, and also with a hole at the bottom. In these cases the twine often unwinds, the weight oftthe hanging end pulling the twine out from the interior ofthe ball. To avoid this ditiiculty, a brake has been applied below the holder, for the cord to run through, and thereby the required friction has been obtained. In this instance, the brake hanging below the twinholder is liable to be injured,- and is in the way ofopening the holder when resting on a table for introducing .the ball of twine previous to the holder being hung up.
` The nature of my said invention consists in a twine-holder in which a loop o1' ring is provided at or near the top ofthe holder, and within the same, over which the cord o'r twine is led and passed down outside the ball and out through aV hole near the centre of the case at the bottom; thereby thefweight of the bail of twine becomes a friction to detain the twine as it is drawn out, and to allow asuioient length to hang Adown for convenience ofuse without the Wei ht of the twine causinrr it to unwind. v 7 g 3 In the drawing, a and bare the half globular sheet-metal shells of the twine-holder hinged together at c,
and-provided with a catch or lock-pin, d, to hold the case together when closed. e is a ring by which the twine` holder is to be suspended from a hook, or in any other oonvenientmanner. `fis a loop or ring attached within the shell a at the upper part, and over this the twine is led from the ball, shown by blue lines, thence within the shells a and b, and out at the hole z'.
It will now be seenthat the ball of twine, resting upon the said twine as it passes out,`produces the friction necessary to detain it, as aforesaid. l
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters `Patent, is
The loop or ring within the upper part or the twine-holder, for the purposes and3 as specified. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 24th day of October, A..'D. 1867.
RODNEY L. SMITH.
