To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON S. WHITAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Venetia, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Engines, of which improvement the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rotary engines, and has for its object to provide an engine which will be reversible and one wherein packing, valves, turbines, and the like are dispensed with.
Another object of my invention is to provide an engine having a two-Way port Wherein, if it is desired, the engine may be reversed.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an engine that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive in manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section through my improved rotary engine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of avalve. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the partitions;
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the cylindrical casing carried by a suitable base 2, said casing being supported by a central portion 3. The casing 1 has suitably secured on each side thereof the plates 4 I and 5, said plates carrying apertures 6, through which passes a shaft 7, said shaft resting in the bearings 8 and 0, which aresupported by the standards 10 from the base 2. 50 The shaft 7 carries a pulley-wheel 11, from which the power is derived.
The reference-numeral 12 represents square portion carried by the shaft 7, and upon said square portion is mounted a rotary wheel 14, said wheel having recesses formed in its periphery, as indicated at 15, the recesses carrying notches 16 for the reception of a spring 17.
The reference'numeral 18 indicates longitudinal opening in the periphery of the wheel 14, allowing access to the recess 15, and in said opening is mounted the partitions 19, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. These partitions have their outer ends beveled, as indicated at 20, the beveled edges extending toward the casing 1, while the other end of said partition rests against the spring 17.
In the upper face of the casing 1 is formed a downwardly-exten ding portion 21, said portion bearing upon the periphery of the rotary wheel 14 and said portion carrying ports 22 and In the outer periphery of the casing 1 is formed a steam-inlet 24, said inlet commnnicating with the ports 22 and 23, the junction of said ports forming aperture 25, in which is secured a valve 26, said valve seating itself in a seat 27, formed in the portion 21, the valve 26 resting upon the bearing 28, said valve carrying a central stem 29, which passes through a packing 30, the stem 29 carrying an operatingdever 31. The valve 26 is formed of two cylindrical portions 32 and 33, said portions having an intervening space therein, as indicated at 34, the portions 32 and 33 being connected together by means of a partition 35, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings. The cylindrical portion 32 has formed in its upper face apertures 36 and a central aperture 37, into which is secured, by means of a screw 38, the stem 29.
In the base of the casing l is an exhaustport 39, said exhaust-port carrying a pipe 40, which passes through an aperture 41, formed in the base portion 3, carried by the base 2.
The operation of my improved engine is as follows: Upon the steam entering the inlet 24 the direction of my rotary engine may be determined by the position of the valve 26, and as the valve is shown in the drawings the engine will travel in the direction indicated by the arrows. Upon the steam entering the inlet-port it passes through the apertures 36, formed in the valve 26, and passes downwardly into the cylindrical portion of my rotary engine by means of the port 23-. The tension of the spring 17, mounted in the recesses 15, has a tendency to eject the partitions outwardly against the cylindrical cas ing, and upon the steam striking the said partitions the wheel 14 is revolved until said partitions pass the exhaust 39,When the steam will be exhausted. It being desirous to reverse the engine, the valve 26 is turned by means of the operating-handle 31, thus closing the port 23 and opening the port 22.
The many advantages obtained by the use of myimproved engine Will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A rotary engine comprising a casing having inlet and outlet ports formed therein, a rotary wheel mounted within the casing, said Wheel having recesses formed therein, with notches formed in the wheel communicating with said recesses, the periphery of the wheel having openings formed therein communicating with said recesses, partitions mounted in said openings, With springs engaging the inner ends of the partitions, the ends of said springs engaging in said notches, a downwardly-extending portion formed integral with the casing and engaging the periphery of the wheel, oppositely-disposed ports formed in said downwardly-extending portion, said ports communicating with the inlet, and a valve for controlling the ports.
