SAMUEL Y. KENNEDY, OF AUBURN, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO D. M. OSBORNE rb COMPANY, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEV YORK.
ll/EOWlNG-WlACl-IINE.
SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,430, dated December 23, 1902- Application led May 27, 1901.
To all 'wtmlt it may concerns Be it known that l, SAMUEL V. KENNEDY, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Flowing-Machine, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention has for its object the production of particularly simple, economical, and efficient connections between the couplingframe and the iinger-bar of a mowing-machine; and it consists in the combination7 construction, and arrangement of the contiguous portions of said coupling-frame and iinger-bar and the connections between the same, as hereinafter' fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming partl of this speciication, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a top plan of a mowing-machine embodying my invention, a portion of the pole being broken away. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly in section, of a portion of said machine. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan of contiguous portions of-the cutter and fingerbars and the coupling-frame operatively connected together. Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical sectional views taken, respectively, on lines 4 4c and 5 5, Fig. l.
A B C represent, respectively, the cutterbar, the finger-bar, and the coupling-frame-of my mowing-machine, all of which parts may be of any suitable form, size, and construction. Said finger-bar B and coupling-frame C are provided, respectively, with an inner shoe h and a yoke D, which so far as this invention is concerned form, essentially, parts of the finger-bar and the coupling-frame. The main body of the coupling-frame C is preferably provided with asnbstantially horizontal pivotal portion c, Fig. 4, extending parallel with the line of draft, andthe coupling-frame bar c' is connected at one extremity to said main body by a coupling member c2, having its rear end provided with a tubular part journaled on the pivotal portion c and its front end provided with a bearing o3, which is arranged at substantially right angles with the pivotal portion c and supports the contiguous extremity of the bar c. The other extremity Serial No. 61.989. (No model.)
of the frame-bar c is provided with a ixed lateral extension c4, Figs. l, 3, and 5, having an upwardly-extending pivotal portion c5, Fig. 5. The described connection between the main body of the frame C and the coupling-bar c thereof is particularly suitable for use with the remaining parts of my mowingmachine; but said connection forms no part of my present invention.
One end of the yoke Dis provided with depending ears d, arranged one in advance of the other and pivoted to the finger-bar B, or, more strictly speaking, to its inner shoe b, by substantially horizontal pivots d', and the other end of the yoke D is provided with slots d2, arranged one in advance of the other. The intermediate portion of the yoke D is formed with a socket Pin its lower face, Fig. 5, for receiving the pivotal portion ci of the lateral extension c4 ofthe coupling-frame bar c and is pivoted to said extension by the socket d3 and the pivotal portion c5 and by a suitable vertical pivot d4, passed through the intermediate portion of the yoke D and said pivotal portion c5. Said yoke D is rigidly secured to the coupling-frame bar by means here illustrated as consisting of a substantially U-shaped fastening member d5, having its intermediate portion engaged with the lower surface of the bar c and its opposite branches engaged with opposite sides of said bar, passed through the slots d2 and provided with nuts d, bearing upon the upper face of the yoke for holding said `fastening member in its adjusted position.
In the use of my mowing-machine Whenever it is desired to force the outer end of the iinger-bar forwardly or backwardly the nuts ZG are loosened and the yoke D is rocked upon its substantially vertical pivotal connection to the cou pling-frame until the lingerbar is sufiicently adjusted, whereupon the nuts fl are firmly clamped against the yoke and the finger-bar is held in its adj usted position.
The construction and operation of my mowing-machine will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be particularly noted that more or less change may be made in the component parts thereof IOO Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a mowing-machine,the combination of a finger-bar and a frame-bar having a fixed lateral extension; with a yoke pivoted to the finger-bar by a substantially horizontal pivot and pivoted to the lateral extension of the frame-bar by a substantially vertical pivot, and means for rigidly securing the frame-bar to the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a moWing-machine,the combination of a nger-bar and a frame-bar having a lixed lateral extension; with a yoke having one end provided With depending ears pivoted to the finger-bar by substantially horizontal pivots, and its intermediate portion pivoted to the lateral extension of the frame-bar by a substantially Vertical pivot, and means for rigidly securing the frame-bar to the other end of the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a mowing-machine, the combination of a finger-bar and a frame-bar having a lateral extension; with a yoke having one end provided with depending ears pivoted to the finger-bar by substantially horizontal pivots, its intermediate portion pivoted to the lateral extension of the frame-bar by a substantially vertical pivot, and its other end provided with slots arranged one in advance of the other, and a substantially U-shapcd fastening member having its intermediate portion engaged with the frame-bar and its opposite branches passed through said slots and provided with means for clamping the frame-bar to the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose specifled.
4. In a mowing-machine, the combination of a finger-bar and a frame-bar having a fixed lateral extension provided with a substantially vertical pivotal portion; with a yoke pivoted to the finger-bar by a substantially horizontal pivot and provided with a socket for receiving the substantially vertical pivotal portion of said lateral extension, and means for rigidly securing the frame-bar to the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a mowing-machine, the combination of a finger-bar and a frame-bar having a fixed lateral extension provided with a substantially vertical pivotal portion; with a yoke having one end provided With depending ears pivot-ed to lthe finger-bar by substantially horizontal pivots and its intermediate portion provided with a socket for receiving the substantially vertical pivotal portion of said lateral extension, and means for rigidly securing the frame-bar to the other end of the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. In a mowing-machine, the combination of a finger-bar and a frame-bar having a Xed lateral extension provided with a substantially vertical pivotal portion; with a yoke pivoted to the finger-bar by a substantially horizontal pivot and provided With a socket for receiving the substantially vertical pivotal portion of said lateral extension, a substantially vertical pivot passed through the yoke and the pivotal portion of said lateral extension, and means for rigidly securing the frame-bar to the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a mowing-machine, the combination of a finger-bar and a frame-bar having a lateral extension provided with a substantially vertical pivotal portion; With a yoke having one end provided with depending ears pivoted to the finger-bar by substantially horizontal pivots, its intermediate portion provided with a socket in its lower face for receiving the substantially vertical pivotal portion of said lateral extension, and' its other end provided with slots arranged one in advance of the other, a substantially vertical pivot passed through the intermediate portion of the yoke and the pivotal portion of said lateral eXtension, and a substantially U-shaped fastening member having its intermediate portion en- IOO
