Description

@eine gister, aient @fitta IMPRQVED BURGLARALARM LOOK-APPARATUS.'
itin Srigthalt rifatta in iu tlgtst ttticts nttut kmh making part rf tigt stmt.
KNOW ALL MEN B Y THESE PRESENTS:
That I, CHARLES-E. PIERCE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarm Apparatus, andwhich I design to be used in' connection Awith doors,
gates, windows, and shutters, andto'be so placed and arranged that when a door, gate, window, or shutter with which my said burglar-alarm appa-ratusris connected, is slightly opened or raised, an alarm will be sounded, and indicato onthe dial-plate which door, gate, window, or shutter, or apartment of building is being opened, raised, or disturbed, and at the Isame time lock said door, gate, window, or shutter, as .case may be. The following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a 'part of the same, in whichfy Figure 1 represents a side view of the alarm-mechanism, and Figure f?, a top viewot` the'saine Figure 3 represents the dial-plate. Figure 4 represents ya. front view of a case which encloses the alarm-mechanism. Figures 5 and 6 represent the window-guards or bolts, which are tobefastened to a window-frame, and Figures 5 and 6" the frontV andV side view ofv a plate to be fastened to Va. window-sash. Figure 6? represents a knob to be placed on the outer ends of window-guards or bolts. Figure 7 represents a perspective view oi' a bolt for doors, gates, and shutters, and I v Figures 7 and 7* the front and side view of a plate which is fastened to thejamb of a-door, gate, or shutter. Figures 8 and 8* represent a front and side view of a lever. i y y Figures 9 and 9 represent a crank to be used in connection with the alarm-apparatus. Figuresv'lt), 11, 1 2, and 12 represent a front and side view of rollers, to be used in connection with the alarm-apparatns. I I
I Figure 13 represents a lever to be attached to the alarm-mcchanism; L, on Figures l14, 145, 14", and 14,
`represent parts oi' a movement Whiclrisapart of the alarmmovemcnt All of which said figures above mentioned are more minutcly' described and explained below. K
Only one alarm-movement, with its propcrvattaehmcnts, on plate A, is representedin the drawings,-but in thc construction and application of my said burglar-alarm apparatus, as many alarm-movements, ,with movement L and lever O attached,may be used a's desired, being careful to place each. alarm-movement in suitable relation to and around the alarm-hell and armsattachcd to the centre-wheel, said movement and bellbeing fastened on plate A.
b, on figs. Sand 6, respectively represent thc arms attached to the guards or bolts for the connectingwires or lines, and to the outer ends of which the said wires or lines may be attached. Said wires or lines may bc attached to either ends of said arms I, depending upon the direction of turn .given to the bolt, with which they are respectively connected.
C, on figs. 5 and 6, represent the guards or bolts for windows, and c c the knob on said bolt, which is placed on and near the end of said bolt C. i
D, on iig. 6, is a small knob, which is to be placed. or vscrewed on to the outer end of said bolt C, said i nob'l) projecting through the frame and into a room, for thc-purpose of its being clasped hold of, or to drawA said bolt-knob c/c out and away from the cavity or recess in plate or figs. 5 and '6"; said plate being fastenedl z to n. window-sash. When said bolt-knob c e is drawn away or removed from the recess inplate on figs. 5 and 5", hereinafter described, which is attached to a sash, the said sash becomes unlocked, andis free to bejraised or lowered, as the case may be, without disturbing the alarm-mechanism, which is placed in a sleeping-apartment or other part of albuilding. i l K i E, on figs. 5 and 6, is a plate, made of metal or other suitable material, to which the holtC is fastened; said plate E having a slot-in it, near thc form of an L, and through whichprojects knob c c, and let into the recess or cavit'yn plate or figs. 5 and 5b, said plate being fastenedto a window-sash. i
F is tho cavity-on plate 5 and 5", for knob e c to hcinscrted yas above described, when pressure is made against knob ce, attached to the bolt C, hy'raising or lowering the window-sash,- the object being tocausea pull to be made on the connecting-wires or lines, and opcratelcver O, onfig. 13, attached to the alarmconcealing the name of a door, gate, window-shutter, or apartmentof a buildil|g,'ivliicl1 may be written or placed iu its proper place on dial-plate on iig. 3, Y i
In the use of my said alarm and lock-apparatus, it will be' found more convenient and desirable to have the parts thereof which are enclosed in the case or cover, above described, placed in some convenient; locality of a sleeping-room, or apartment of a building, so that 'when 'an attempt is made by a burglar or other person to open a door, gate, window, or shutter, when the said apparatusis properly adjusted, an alarm will be sounded and immediately indicate on the dial-plate the name of the door, window, gate, shutter, or apartment of c, building which is being disturbed. To effect the locking of the door and alarm being sounded, also indicating on the dial-plate from whence the alarm proceeds, one end of wires 1or lines is attached to one end of lever O, or its equivalent attached to the alarm-movement, and the other end of' thc said wires or lines is fastened to the outer ends of the guards or bolts, above described; and when the knob of either of the window or door-bolts is placed in the recess or cavity in platcs on gs. 5 and 5b, and 7 and 7b, said plates being fastened to a door, gate, sbutter, or window, by slightly raising or lowering the window, or opening the door, gate, or shutter, it will cause the bolt teturn partially around, carrying with it the arms bien the bolt Gand C', to which the connecting-wires or lines are attached, andconsequently cause said .wires orlines to draw down that arm of the lever 0 attached to the alarm-movement with which cneend ofthe wires orlines is connected', which raises the opposite arm of lever 0, and releases the projecting part o o from the detect-army', attached te spindle g', said spindle g being attached to the alarm-movement. The projecting part o o o being inserted in clasp Lion spindle Ll, and one end of lever O being, raised, of course carries with-it'the outer end of clasp L2. The pin L3, on spindle Ll being inserted-in clasp L, attached to spindle L L, causes said spindle L L tc turn to the right or left, carrying with it hand G, which is fastened to the upper end of spindleL L, which projectsv through the dial-plate, above described. The object ci' said hand G being placed over the dial and'nttached to spindle L L, is for the pura pose o-rovealing or concealing the name of the window, door, gate, shutter, or apartment of a building, and when arm m', attached to centre-wheel m, is moved out and away fromA the detenbarm q, and the projecting o o, lever O raised also out of the way of the detect-arm q, attached to spindle g', theihammer-arm P attached to spindle q becomes free, and when the spring, attached-to the alarm-movement is wound up, an alarm will be sounded, hand G turned so as to reveal ou the dial-plate the name of the door, gate, shutter, window, or apartment of a buildingl which is being disturbed and causes the alarm.
" Having thus described mysad alarm and lock-apparatus, and the mannerI in which the same is operated, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-e v i 1. :I claim the combination of the bolts shown in figs. 5 and 6, with the parts 5", 5, and 6, operating to vlock a window, in the manner shown.
