BUCKET-DUMPING APPARATUS.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. WILoox', a citizen of theUnited States of America,residing at Saratoga, in the county of Carbon and cially intended for use in dumping ore-buckets as they are drawn from "mining-shafts; and to this end the invention consists of the features, arrangements, and combinations hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

Fig. 3 isfla perspective view of the dumping device shown in de tail and on a larger scale. Fig. 4 is a similar View showing a modified form of dumping device.

Let the numeral 5 designate agallows frame or support of ordinary construction and consisting of three bars connected at the top by a spindle 6, upon which is mounted a pulley 6, over which passes ,a rope or,cable 7, to one extremityof which is connected a bucket 8, the other extremity of the cable being connected with suitable hoisting mechanism. (Not shown.)
The dumping device 9 consists of what I will term a cradle adapted to receive and hold the ore-bucket during the dumping operation. It comprises a frame or body part, which, as shown in the drawings, consists of an integral bar of such shape as to form a rear part 9 and two forwardlyextending arms 9,bowed outwardly in the center to conform to the general shape of the bucket and terminating at their forward extremities in inwardly-bent hooks 9 adapted to engage the top edge of the bucket and retain the latter in the cradle during the dumping operation. The forward portions of the arms 9 are connected by a downwardly-bent part 9 The cradle is also provided with two rearwardly-located upwardly-projecting ears 9 and two other ears 9 To the center of the rear part 9 is attached a ring 9 to which is connected the lower extremity of a suspension-chain 1.0, whose upper extremity is connected with the rear frame-bar 5 as shown at 12. From this chain 10 lead two branch chains 13,whose lower extremities are respectively connected with the ears 9 of the cradle. The dumping-cradle is further suspended on the frame by two chains 14:, whose lower extremities are respectively connected with the ears 9' of the cradle, these cars being located rearwardly of the center of the bucket when the latter is lying upon its side in the cradle. The upper extremities of these chains 14 are connected with arms or brackets 15, mounted on the respective bars 5 of the frame and projecting forwardly or toward the left therefrom, referring to Figs. 1 and 2. A pull cord, rope, or cable 16 is connected at one extremity with the ring 9 and passes over a pulley 17, mounted on the frame part 5.
Pivotally mounted on the ears 9 of the dumping-cradle, as shown at 18, is a device 19, having a downwardly bowed or bent part 19 two parts 19 extending rearwardly. from the respective pivots, and-twoinclined parts 19 extending inwardly and upwardly from the lower extremities of the partslt) to an apex 19 When the apparatus is in use, the dumping device is held in the position shown by dotted linesin Fig. 2 until the bucket, which is drawn from the shaft 20, is raised to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. The cord or cable 16, which passes over a pulley 17 on the bar 5 is then slackened and the dumping device allowed to swing to the position shown by full lines in Fig. l. The cable 7 is then slackened and the bucket descends in an upright position, guided by the branch chains 13, until its bottom, which is somewhat concave, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, engages the apex 19 of the pivoted device 19. Assuming that the bail of the bucket is in the position shown in Fig. 1 or in a plane passed longitudinally through the center of the dumping-cradle,which position is undesirable for dumping, it is necessary that the bucket should be turned to a position where the bail will be at right angles or approximately at right angles to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. The proper dumping position is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 2. As the bucket descends the central portion of its concave bottom will engage the apex 19 of the pivoted device and cause the bucket to tip to one side or the other simultaneously with its forward tipping action. This operation will throw the greater part of the weight upon the forward ear 8 of the bucket, causingthe bucket-bottom to turn on the apex 19 as a pivot until the bail is at right angles or approximately at right angles to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. Then as the bucket tips upon its side it leaves the apex of the device 19 and engages the part 19, which normally occupies an inclined position, as indicated by full lines in Fig. 1. As soon as this occurs the bucket immediately swings rearwardly to the dotted-line position in Fig. 1, bringing it back far enough to allow the hooks 9 of the cradle to engage the upper edge of the bucket, making it possible to use a cradle of less length than could otherwise be employed. I-Ience the pivoted device 19 performs two important functions-first, in causing the bucket to assume the proper dumping position with reference to its bail whenever it is in the improper position as it engages the apex of the pivoted device, and, second, in causing the bucket to swing rearwardly as desired after it is tipped upon its side, as described.
It will be noticed by observing the drawings that the chains 14 are connected with the dumping device rearwardly of the center of the arms 9. Hence the greater portion of the weight of the loaded bucket is forward of the plane of suspension, causing the dumping device to tip forwardly. Simultaneously with the tipping operation the bucket and dumping device swing forwardly, since the supporting-chains 14 are connected with the brackets 15 in a vertical plane forward of a plane passed through the center of gravity of the load suspended by the chains. Hence the load will swing forwardly in its effort to cause these planes to coincide or to bring the center of gravity of the bucket and dumping device directly beneath the point of suspension, whereby the chains 14 assume a vertical position. (See Fig. 2.) The object of this arrangement is to cause the bucket to dump into a car 20 or other suitable receptacle located at one'side of the mining-shaft.
After the bucket isdumped the dumping device is pulled rearwardly by the cord 16 to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. During this operation the bucket is lifted from the dumping device by winding up the cable 7, after which it is allowed to descend into the shaft, and the operation is repeated.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the dumping device is provided with a downwardly-bent band 9 whose upper extremities terminate in ears 9, corresponding with the ears 9 of the form shown in Fig. 3. This band 9 is rigidly connected with the frame of the dumping device and forms the support for the rear part of the bucket. Alever-like device 21 is pivotally mounted on the ears 9", as shown at 22. The arms 21 forward of the fulcrum 22 are respectively connected with the branch chains 13 of the chain 10. The arms of the device 21 extend rearwardly from the fulcrum 22, as shown at 21, and from the extremities of these arms 21 two arms 21' extend upwardly to form an apex 21 which engages the concave bottom of the bucket and causes the latter to turn under the same circumstances and in the same manner as heretofore described when explaining the function of the corresponding portion of the device 19. The rear part 9 of the bucketframe forms a support for both of the devices 19 and 2l,whereby theyare retained in proper position while engaged by the bucket.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a bucket-dumpingapparatus,the combination witha suitable frame, of a dumpingcradle suspended from the frame and arranged to swing across the vertical path of the bucket, the said cradle being constructed to receive and hold the bucket during the dumping operation, and a device mounted on the rear portion of the cradle and shaped to engage the bottom of the bucket for the purpose set forth.
2. Inabucket-dumpingapparatus,the combination with a supporting-frame, of a dumping-cradle suspended from the frame and arranged to swing across the path of the bucket as the latter is drawn from the mine, the said cradle being constructed to receive and hold the bucket during the dumping operation,and a device pivotally mounted on the rear portion of the cradle and adapted to engage the bottom of the bucket, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a supporting-frame, of a dumping-cradle suspended from the frame and arranged to swing across the path of the suspended bucket, the said cradle being constructed to receive and hold the bucket as described, and a device mounted on the rear portion of the cradle and provided with an apex adapted to engage the concave bottom of the bucket for the purpose set forth.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a suitable frame, of a dumping-cradle suspended from the frame 7 with arms extending upwardlytoform an apex adapted to engage the concave bottom of the bucket for the purpose set forth.
5. In abucket-dumpingapparatus,the combination with a suitable frame, of a dumpingcradle suspended from the frame and arranged to swing across the vertical path of the bucket as it is drawn from the shaft, the said cradle being constructed to receive and hold the bucket as described, and a device pivotally mounted on the rear part of the cradle and extending below thesame for the purpose set forth.
6. In bucket-dumping apparatus, the combination with a suitable frame, of a dumpingcradle suspended from the frame and arranged to swing across the vertical path of the bucket, the said cradle being constructed to receive and hold the bucket as described, and a device pivotally mounted on the rear part of the cradle, extending below the same, and normally occupying an inclined position, substantially as shown and described.
7. Inabucket-dumpingapparatus,thecombination with a suitable supporting-frame, of a dumping-cradle suspended from the frame and arranged to swing across the path of the bucket as described, the said cradle being constructed to receive and hold the bucket, and a device pivotal-1y mounted on the rear part of the cradle, having a rearwardly-extending part provided with an apex, and normally engaging the rear part of the cradle which forms a support, and having a depending band normally occupying an inclined position, substantially as shown and described.
8. The combination with a suitable frame, of a dumping-cradle constructed to form a support for the bucket when tipped on its side, a suspension-chain connected with the rear part of the cradle, and provided with branch guide-chains connected with the cradle on opposite sides forward of the main chain, and suspension devices connected with the body of the dumping device, forward of the guide-chains, substantially as shown and described.
9. The combination with a suitable frame, of a dumping-cradle constructed to form a support for the bucket when tipped on its side, a suspension-chain connected with the rear part of the cradle and provided with branch guide-chains connected with the cradle on opposite sides forward of the main chain, suspension devices connected with the' body of the device forward of the guide-chains, and a device pivotally mounted on the rear part of the cradle, having a rearwardly-extending part provided with an apex, and a downwardly-exteuding part normally occupying an inclined position, substantially as shown and described.
