SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,283, dated December 16, 1902. Applicationfiled August 4., 1902. Serial No. 119,593. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MYRON ROUNDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roxbury, in thecounty ofSuffolk and State of Massaf 5 chusetts, (and whose post-office addresslis No. 2 Alpine Place, Roxbury district, Boston,
Massachusetts,) have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Snow-Flows; and
I dohereby declare the following to be a full,

such as will enable others. skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to snow-plows, but more especiallyzto electrically-propelled machines for removing snow from the tracks and 2c road-beds of street-railways.
Hitherto in devices of the class above referred to it has been usual to provide them with an initial main or nose plow adapted to throw or deflect the snow bothto the right i 2 5 andflleft of the track. Sometimes such plows have been supplemented bylateral or wing plows for further increasing the range of the apparatus. A well-known type of snow-plow is that wherein a wide board or, share, as it is termed, extends diagonallyacross the under side of the wheeled frame or car-truck,
the arrangement being such that all the snow acted upon is diverted to one side of the car. The object I have in view is to produce a snow-plow which shall be more efficient and.
better adapted to street service than snowplows heretofore employed. By means of my improvement the entire apparatus is adjust able and under the full control of the oper 4o ator and his attendants. The snowcan' be diverted both to the right and left, or it may all be diverted .to the right or tothe left, as desire l, and whilethe plow is traveling in either direction, and by the use of hinged side wings the scope of the plow is further increased. The mechanism is strong yet light,
it iseasily and quicklyadj usted, and when not in use the several deflectors are kept normally suspended quite a distance above the track.
In carrying out my invention I make use of the adjustably-mounted substantially V- shaped main or nose plow placed forward of the truck and beneath the car-base, combined with independently-adjustable wing or share plows located in advance of and arranged to cooperate with the main plow for deflecting all the snow acted upon to the right or to the left, as desired, all as will be more fully hereinafter Set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, in partial section, of a power-propelled snow-plow car embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of. the same, a portion of the car-base being broken away to more clearly show the arrangement of the plows.
Again referring to the drawings, A indicates a snowplow car embodying my improvements. The car proper is or may be made substantially as common and adapted to be propelled by electricity or other motive power. The base 0 of the car is supported on trucks carrying wheeled axles, also as usual. I have omitted from the drawings means for propelling the car, braking mechanisms, &c., since they form no part of my present invention.
In my improved car I prefer to provide each end thereof with the snow-removing apparatus forming the subject of this application for patent, said apparatus being located in advance of the adjacent axlewith respect to the direction of the moving car.
The metallic main or nose plow B is practically V-shaped, the point b where the two sides intersect being central of the car. The said sides are somewhat curved or concave and are adapted to throw the snow both right and left to a point beyond the truckwheels w. The two sides or parts of the plow B are rigidly secured together, a brace b, Fig. 2, serving to keep the rear ends of the two sides laterally separated. At or near the forward end of the main plow is fixed a strong downwardly-extending post 6, the same passing through guide-eyes mm, secured to the plow. Said post is further stiifened by the employment of an upwardly-bent brace 15, secured to the car-base. From the foregoing it will be apparent that the plow B is suspended and adapted to be moved vertically. This is eifected by means of a central chain or flexible connection fand the two side chains f, each passing over a suitable wheel secured to a shaft 5, mounted in bearings fixed to the under side of the car-base, as clearly shown. To the said shaft is secured an opcrating-lever Z, having a pawl Z arranged to engage the teeth of a fixed plate l (see Fig. 1,) the construction being such that the plow may be maintained in either extreme position, up or down, or any intermediate position, as desired.
At each end of the car Aare located a pair of curved metallic movable wing or share plows. The two sides or parts of each pair form a V shape and are indicated by a at. These wing-plows are placed forward of the main plow and are arranged reversely at an angle therewiththat is, the common point or apex b practically coincides with the point b of the main plow. The sides of the wingplow are in use adapted to form a continuation of those of the main plow.
The two parts or sides a a are independently movable in a vertical direction with respect to the plow B and to each other. They are jointed or hinged to a series of downwardly-extending fixed posts 6 through the medium of bent arms 6 and are further stiffened by the use of braces e, which extend from each side at a to the inner bent arms a Each side or wing is, as before stated, independently movable. The following is a description of the mechanism represented for effecting such movement.
It will be seen, referring to Fig. 2, that a pair of obliquely-arranged stands at n are mounted on the car-base, in each of which is pivoted a bell-crank lever h h the latter being jointed to a suspension-link 71 jointed to the corresponding side or wing. Thus it will be seen that by manipulating the lever h the wing may be raised or lowered to its limit, or it may be secured in anyintermediate position by simply inserting a pin into one of the corresponding circularly-arranged holes h formed in the stand and lever.
In order to produce a widerpath or swath in the snow, I may provide the car with a series of movable supplemental plows cl, each being located at the side and rear of the main plow and adapted practically to form a continuation of it. These supplemental plows are substantially as common to snow-plows hitherto in use-that is, they are hinged to the car-frame, a brace 01 serving to maintain them at a proper angle with respect to the car.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a power-driven snow-plow car A provided with my improvement is adapted to divert the snow from the tracks both to the right and left or all to the right or all to the left, as desired, and while the car is running in either direction. By referring to the drawings it will be apparent that the car is represented as being propelled ahead, (see arrow direction,) all the plows at the opposite or rear end of the car being elevated and not in use. At the working end of the car the main plow B, the left forward wing or share plow a, and also the right supple mental plow d are in the lowest position, the other side a of the forward plow being elevated. (See also Fig. 1.) When thus adjusted, all the snow acted upon will be diverted to the rightthat is, the plow a will deflect its share of the snow to the right Wing of the plow B, the latter in turn deflecting its portion of the snow, together with that from a plow a, laterally beyond the car, assisted also by the supplemental plow d. By elevating the wing at and depressing the wing a all the snow may be diverted to the left. By elevating both wings a a the snow will be diverted both right and left, the side plows 01 being in use or not, as desired.
It will be seen that only one lever Z is employed to control the main plow. Consequently the latter may be actuated with greater speed and facility.
I claim as my invention- 1. A snow-plow having substantially a V- shaped main member adapted in use to work near the track or road-bed to divert snow to the right and left, means for raising and lowering said member, a pair of independent share plows arranged in advance of and adapted to cooperate with the main member and when in use forming a continuation or prolongation of the sides of the latter, and means for raising and lowering said shareplows independently of each other, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
2. In a snow-plow, an adjustably-mounted V-shaped main or nose member, as B, located forward of the axles, and independently-adjustable share-plows, as a, 00, mounted forward of said main member or plow and arranged to coact therewith, for the purpose of diverting snow to the right or left at will, substantially as set forth.
3. In a snow-removing machine of the class described, the combination with a main or nose plow and means for raising and lowering the same, of a wing or share plow located in advance of and arranged to cooperate with said main plow and means for raising and lowering it, substantially as set forth.
4:. In a snow-removing machine, the combination with a vertically-adjustable main or nose plow adapted to divert the snow both to the right and left, of a pair of independentlymounted angularly-arranged vertically-adjustable wing or share plows located forward of the said wing-plows to cooperate with the main plow in forcing the snow acted upon to the right or to the left as desired, substantially as described.
5. In a snow-removing machine, the combination of a vertically-adjustable main or ICO nose plow adapted to divert the snow both to the right and left, independently-mounted adjustable wing or share plows located forward of and adapted to cooperate with said main plow, and adjustable supplemental wing or side plows arranged to form a continuation of the main plow, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
6. In an electrically or other power propelled snow plowcar, the combination of a movable main or nose plow located at each end portion of the car below the floor or platform, a movable double-share plow located in advance of each main plovv and adapted to cooperate therewith, movable supplemental side plows arranged to form a continuation of the said main plows and means for manipulating the several plows, substantially as described.
