Be it known that I, Josnrii WACKERMAX, of \Varren, in the county of Varren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Snow-Plow, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to snow-plows adapted especially for use in clearing railway-tracks, and has for its object to provide a machine the snowshovels of which have freedom of movement in rounding curves of the track, and may be raised or lowered as required and adjusted to the tracks for clearing them effectively and quickly. The invention may also be used for clearing paths over common roads.
The invention consists in particular eonstruetions and combinations of parts of the snow-plow, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved snowplow as attached to a locomotive-engine for clearing the railroad-tracks. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is an under side view of the snow-plow, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail side views of a couple of the runners of the plow.
I make the snowplow with the concave mold-boards A A joined at their forward ends and diverging backward, and secured to a bedplate or platform, l-3,which inclines downward and forward, and has a square end extending forward to the letter 1), Figs. 2, 3, and -l. The parts A B are supported by a frame, A, of wood or iron bars, which may connect the plow to the front of a locomotiveengine, B, for clearing the tracks t of snow; or the plow may be supported in front of a tractionengine or wheeled vehicle for use on common roads.
The letter l) indicates a frame or plate, to which are connected the snow-shovel plates E .F. The shovel-plate Eis bolted rigidly to the rear part or bar, (I, of the frame I), and so that its rear edge overlaps the forward end, I), of the bed-plate B; and the shovel-plate F, which in a railway snow-plow is made prefcrably in ,ihree sections, is hinged at c to the (No model.)
front edge of the plate E, and rests on the front bar, (1, of the frame D.
To the rear bar, d, of the frame 1) are fixed a series of arms, (P, which project backward and are rabbeted, so as to give space for the forward end of the bed-plate B between them and the overlapping rear edge of the shovelplate E; and to the arms (I is fixed a curved bar, G, which bears against the guide and anti-friction rollers H; or it maybe grooved guide blocks 'ournaled or fixed to the bedplate B.
Vith this construction the shovel-plates E F and frame Dare supported by the bed-plate 3, and are at liberty to turn bodily to either side as the bar G moves over the rollers H, to allow themachineto turn curves more readily wit-bout damage to the plow-runners, presently described.
The letter I indicates atransversely-ranging shaft, which is journaled in the mold-board A or hangers thereon, and has a lug or lugs at i, to which is pivoted the upper end of a bar or rod, J, the lower end of which is pivoted at j to the rear end of a longitudinally-ranging bar, K, which is fulcrumed at I; in a post, L, fixed to the under side of the bed'plate B.
The bar K extends forward into a box or casing, M, which is fixed to the under side of the frame D, and is sufficiently wide to allow lateral play of the frame 1) and plow shovel plates E F without striking the end of bar K, and the extreme end of the bar K is so fitted to the box M that when the shaft I is rocked to depress the back end of bar li its forward end will lift the frame 1) and shovel-plates E F and the forward ends of the plow-runners O 0, the back edge of plate 15 then sliding rearward more or less on the bed-' plate B.
For operating the shaft l to raise or lower the shovel-plates and runners, i provide a rod or bar, N, which is connected with an arm or lug, 1:, fixed to the shaft, and extends rearward to the engine-cab. or within reach of an attendant on a vehicle to which the snow-plow may be attached. Arms it, having adjustable weights 11", are fixed to the shaft 1'. and partly counterbalance the weight of the shovel-plates and runners, and allow them to be more easily lifted by the rod N.

connect itloosely to the curved bar G, and a loop or eye, formed in or fixed to the center of the yoke connects it loosely with the fulcrum-post L of the shovel-adjusting barK. The yoke I allows free lateral and curving movements of the shovel plates and runners,
and preyentslheir disconnection in a forward direction from the bed-plate B and mold-board of the plow.
I pivotally connect the forward ends of the runners O O to the front edge of the shovelplate F by means of pins 0, which pass through lugs 0, fixed to the runners, and lugs 0", fixed to the shovel-plate; and the rear ends of the runners have slots B, through which passes a transverselyranging bar or rod, S, which is held at the ends in hangers T, fixed to the bed-plate B, and two or more intermediate brace-rods, tt, may connect the bar S to the bed-plate, if desired. One or more of the central runners, as at 0, Fig. 6, have their slots R open to their back ends, which allows these runners to be removed by taking out their front pivots, o, and slipping them forward off the bar S, as may sometimes be necessary when the ballast is high at the center of the track.
To the outer end or edge of the forward shovel-plate, F, and at points between the runners O 0, are fixed the upwardly-curved guardbars U, which serve to lift the shovels above any obstacles which may chance to lie in the path of the plow between the runners, and which would not be struck by the runners.
Slots or openings V are made in the forward edge of the shovel plate F, into which slots the railway tracks 0 enter as the plow moves forward.
As before stated, I make the shovelplate F in sections, three sections being shownviz., a central section, F, and two opposite end sec tions, F I. This construction allows the rentral and end runners, O O, of each section 1*" F to swing independently forward on the bar S and upward on the hinges e, as the Various runners meet inequalities of ground or tie surface along the track or road; and to allow the outside runners to be lifted higher at the forward ends than theinner runners, so as to meet and pass over considerable inequalities on the ends of the ties, and also to allow vertical adjustment of the end sections, F, above the central shovel-section, F, when it is not desired to 'cut down the snow quite so close to the ties at the outside of the rails, I make the shovel-sectionsFwith two plates,f f"--ihe onef hinged at e to the shovel plate F, and the onef held to the plate f by screws f passed through slots in plate f into plate f so that by loosening screws f t the plates f to which the outer runners, O, and guards U are att-achedmay be raised or lowered at any time, as will readily be understood.
I provide cutters, as at V, which are fixed at the opposite ends of the central shovelplate section, F, and serve to make a clean out through the snow along the tops of the rails O O, and facilitate the clearing of them by the plow.
WVhen the plow is intended for use on common roads, the shovehplate F may be made in one piece and without the slots V and cutters IV; or said plate F may be made in the three sections F F F, with the outer sections, F in one piece and with or without the cutters WV, as may be desired, the construction of the shovel-plates, as hereinbefore described, being intended more espccially for plows to be used in clearing railway-tracks.
It is obvious that when the snowplow is at work the runners O 0' will be raised when running over crossings or switches of the railway track, and the runners will raise the shovel-plate F clear of the tracks.
NVhen the plate F is lifted by the runners, the snow beneath the plate willhave a chance to escape freely through the frame D by passing over its front bar, at, and beneath the plate E and the rear bar, (1 of the frame; hence the snow will not pack at the front of the plow beneath the shovel-plates when the outer plate, F, is lifted, and when, the plate falls again it will have a solid support on the crossbar d f frame D against the pressure of the snow lifted by it, and the snow passes backward over the bed-plate l3, and is thrown sidewise both ways by the mold-boards A, which, however, may be shaped to throw all the snow to either side of the track.
By taking out the bar S and detaching the ends of yoke P from the curved bar G the runners and shovel-plates may be removed from the plow for adjustment, repair, or renewal when required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A snow-plow constructed with a laterally-movable and vertically-adj ustable shovelplate at its forward end, and with means for raising and lowering the plate, substantially as herein set forth.
2. A snow-plow constructed with a laterally-movable shovel at its forward end.,which overlaps the bed-plate of the plow, and said shovel being made in twoplate-sections hinged to each other crosswise of the plow, substan tially as herein set forth.
3. Asnow-plow constructed with a laterally-movable shovel at its forward end, and said shovel overlapping the bed-plate of the plow, and made in two plate-sections hinged to each other crosswise of the plow, and the front shovel-plate having runners pivoted to it,and said runners having a longitudinal slot-connection with a rear cross-bar fixed to the plow bed-plate, substantially as herein set forth.
4. A snow-plow constructed with a laterally movable shovel at its forward end, which shovel overlaps the plow bed-plate, and is made in two plate-sections hinged to each ICC other crosswise of the plow, and the front shovel-plate being made in central and oppo site end parts independently movable vertically on their hinge-joints, and with runners pivoted near their forward ends to the front shovel-plate sections, and having a longitudi- 112tlSlOh-COI1118C IlOl1 attheir rear ends with a cross-bar fixed to the plow bed-plate, substantially as herein set forth.
5. The combination, in a snow-plow, of the mold-board and bed-plate A B, the shovelplates E E, hinged together at e, the plate E overlapping bed-plate B, and being fixed to a frame, D, which has backwardly-projecting arms (1 the curved bar G, fixed to bed-plate B, and against which the bar G presses, thelinks and yoke P, connecting bar G with a post fixed to the bed-plate, and means for raising or lowering shovel-plates E F and frame I), substantially as herein set forth.
6. The combination, in a snow-plow, of the 1nold-board and bedplate A B, the shovelplates E F, hinged together at c, said plate E overlapping the plate B, and being fixed to a frame, 1), which has arms (1, the bar G, sheaves or guides H, the yoke P, links 1), con meeting the bar G and the shovel-plates to a post on bed-plate B, and the lever K, fulcrulned on a post, L, fixed to plateB, and said lever extending forward beneath the shovelplate frame I), to raise and lower the shovelplates, and means for operating the lever, substantially as herein set forth.
7. The combination, in snow-plow, of the mold-board and bed-plate A B, shovel-plates E F, hinged together at c, and said plate E overlapping bed-plate B, and being fixed to a frame,D, which has arms (1 the bar G, sheaves or guides H, the yoke l? and links 1), connecting the bar G and the shovel-plates E F to a post on bed-plate B, the lever K, fulcrumed on post L and extending into a casing, M, fixed to frame D, the bar J, shaft 1, arm a, and the rod N, extending to the attendant behind the plow, substantially as herein set forth.
8. The combination, in a snow-plow, and with the hinged shovel-plate E and frame D, supported from the bed-plate B, so as to have lateral and vertical movements, substantially as described, of the plate F, having openings V V for the railway-tracks to enter, substantially as herein set forth.
9. The combination, in a snow-plow, and with the hinged shovel -plates E F and frame I), supported from the bed'plate B, so as to have lateral and vertical movements, substantially as described, of runners O O, pivoted at o to the shovelplate F, and connected by slots R at their back ends with a cross-bar, S, held in posts T, fixed to the bed-plate B, substantially as herein set forth.
10. The combination, in a snow-plow, and with the hinged front shovel-plate, E, of the central runner or runners, pivoted at 0 to the plate F, and having open slots B at their back ends, substantiallyas herein set forth.

14. In a snow-plow, the shovel-plates E F, hinged to each other at e, and supported from the bed-plate B and on a frame, D, in combination with runners pivoted at 0 to the plate E, and said plate F being made in sections F F' I and having openings V V for the railway-tracks at themeeting ends of its sections, and cutters \V \V, secured to the section E at the openings V V, substantially as herein set forth.
15. In a snow-plow, the combination, with the hinged shovel -plate F and runners O O, pivoted thereto, of the upturned guards U, fixed to the shovel-plate between and next the runners, substantially as herein set forth.
