OLIVER F. CONKLIN, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
DYNAMO-ELECTRIC MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 716,193, dated December 16, 1902. Application filed August 11, 1902. SerielNo.119.229. N0 model.)
To all whom, it ntay concern:
Be it known that -I, OLIVER F. OONKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sp ringfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dynamo-Electric Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dynamo-electric machines, and relates more specifically to the armature and the windings of the coils andformation of the drum, so as to obviate the objections due to heating of the armature, and for the purpose of constructing an improved form of armature.
My improvement may be used regardless of the character of the armature as to its polar arrangement, whether bipolar or multipolar machines. I have shown the wires formed into detachable form-wound coils and adapted for use on a drum formed with a series of disks, and my form-wound coils are shown of equal halves, though other forms of coils might be used whether form-made 0r hand-made and whetheradapted for disk or ring armatures or drum-armatures.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the armature. Fig. 2'is a top view of the drum with the series of disks assembled thereon. Fig. 3 is a detail of the fan. Fig. 4: is a detail of the disk, and Fig. 5 a detail View of one of the coils.
In the said drawings like parts are represented by similar letters of reference.
The armature-shaft is marked a, and the commutator is marked 12. I have shown the disks 0 strung upon the armature-shaft a. The drum cl on the armature-shaft and the casing cl for the fan care so arranged on the armature-shaft that they hold the disks together compactly, as shown in Fig. 2. The teeth on the periphery of the disk-Wheels thereby form slots, which are insulated, and the coils f are assembled on the armatureshatt by having the sides f and f fit with corresponding slots formed by the teeth of said disks.
As shown'in Fig. 1, there is formed in the inner part of the drum d, by reason of the partitions d 01 and 02', three openings. The
openings formed in the disk-wheels (marked 0, c and 0 form, with the openings through the casingof the drum, three chambers, which are for the intake of air for the fan e. The fan 6 in rotating with the armature-shaft a causes a current of air to circulate through the coils, thus preventing heating of the armature.
It will be seenthat in constructing my device the drum (1 and the fan 6 not only bind the disks 0 together, but also provide supports for the ends of the coils, the coils being bound thereto by the bands f, and the coils are also preferably bound to the disks by the bands f The casing d of the fan I preferably form with a solid web or back (1 so as to interpose a wall between the armature and the commutator, and the wings d of the fan extend laterally beyond the periphery of the casing d, so that by forming and placing the coils as shown the fan will discharge radially through the openings 0 between the coils. These openings 0 formed at the angle 0 of the coils by the lapping of the coils when placed on the disks, while individually of comparatively small area, yet in the aggregate (there being forty-eight openings in the one shown in the drawings) form an ample discharge. The periphery of the drum d,abutting'against the disk, will not permit circulation through the openings formed in that end of the coils, the draft or intake-being confined to the openings provided by the perforations d 61 and d of the drum, and the openings 0, c and c of the disks, and the discharge being throughgthe openings 0 in the coils, as described. I
It will be seen that I provide a fan at one end of the armature so constructed-as to interpose a wall between it and the commutator and form a support for one end of the coils and to discharge through the openings in the coils between the armature and the commutator, thereby not only freeing the armature of heat, but in such a manner as to prevent the heat of the armature being conducted into the commutator.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In an armature, the combination of the disks, a fan at one end of said disks, openings through said disks forming the intake for said fan, coils on said disks extending over said fan arranged With openings forming the discharge for said fan, substantially as specified.
2. In an armature, the combination of the coils-support and commutator, and a fan between said support and commutator, openings through said support forming the intake for said fan, coils on said support also supported by said fan and arranged with openings forming the discharge for said fan, substantially as specified.
3. In an armature, the combination of the armature-shaft, disks, a drum, a fan and a commutator fixed on said shaft, said drum abutting said disks upon one side and said fan upon the other between said disks and commutator, coils upon said drum, disks and fan, said drum and disks having corresponding openings therein forming the intake for said fan and said coils arranged with openings therein, forming radial discharge for said fan, substantially as specified.
4-. In an armature, the combination of the armature-shaft, disks, a drum, a fan and a commutator fixed on said shaft, said drum abutting said disks upon one side and said fan upon the other between said disks and commutator, coils upon said drum, disks and fan, said drum and disks having corresponding openings therein forming the intake for said fan and said coils arranged with openin gs therein, forming radial discharge for said fan, and an intervening wall between said fan and commutator, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of July, A. D. 1902.
